The Umbria region
Casa Colcello is in Umbria known as the 'green heart of Italy' with Tuscany to the North and West and on to the Mediterranean coast. East of Umbria the Marches region stretches from the Southern Apennines to the beaches of the Adriatic. The climate is typically mediterranean a warm spring and autumn and the hot summer months of July and August. We have the advantage of being elevated which provides fresher air in the heat of summer and allows us to rise above valley mists in the autumn and winter.
We are situated in the Upper Tiber Valley an ancient mystical land in the northernmost Umbrian territory. The Tiber river runs through the entire length of the valley making it extremely fertile. This area is known for medieval hill top towns, fields full of sunflowers, tobacco, and poppies; olive oil, wine, and truffles; hills and valleys of natural forest. Festivals, folklore, ancient traditions and gastronomy; Renaissance art and architecture. This is an area less touched by tourism than nearby Tuscany. The people are very freindly.
Perugia the area’s capital should be visited for its wealth of art, exquisite architecture and Etruscan walls. You are very centrally located within the country, a perfect location to visit the key attractions of both Tuscany and Umbria - Perugia, Assisi, Anghiari, Arezzo, Gubbio, Cortona and Sansepolcro can be visited in under an hour. Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Lake Trasimeno - up to 90 mins. Ravenna, Urbino, Chianti and more.
Monte Santa Maria Tiberina
If you can manage to tear yourself away from Casa Colcello you will find a Panzano food/wine store, pharmacy and bancomat in the tiny hamlet of Gioiello (just 5km away) and a couple of supermarkets, butchers, bakers, bank, newsagent, post office etc at San Secondo ( only 9km). Two restaurants in Monte Santa Maria Tiberina less than 10 mins away and an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, places of interest, activities and happenings in the local towns of Citta di Castello (18kms), Monterchi, Citerna, Anghiari, and Sansepolcro.
CITTA DI CASTELLO (18km) - Nearest main town - is a wonderful medieval centre with winding streets to wander where people have time to stroll and chat - you will find all shops, banks, supermarkets, street markets morning market held on Thursdays and Saturdays, concerts and shows, special festivals, galleries, ice cream shops - gelateria, cafes, restaurants, and the thermal spa Terme Fontechio. Have a drink at one of the many pavement cafes, people watch, or just enjoy the evening passegiata.
There are a number of beautiful hamlets, villages and towns within 25 minutes, some dating back at least to the 16th century, including medieval Montone, Monterchi famous for Piera della Francesco’s ‘Madona del Parto’, other works can be found in nearby Sansepolcro, Arezzo and further away in Urbino. The stunning hill top hamlet of Monte Sainta Maria Tiberina dates back to Etruscan times and is less than 10 minutes away. Perched high on a hillside a lovely small traditional village with winding cobbled streets to wander around with the Marquis Bourbon castle at the top, the main tower is visible for miles around, even from neighbouring Tuscany and is a real local landmark. At over 600 m you are guaranteed the most incredible 360 degree views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Oscars Village bar/restaurant, famous locally for their truffles and pasta, and local shop can be found in the village and another Pizzeria/restaurant, Il Palazzetto (they also do take away) just on the outskirts.
There are many concerts and festivals both in the local area and further afield throughout the summer varying from the tiny to the spectacular. Traditional and modern festivals - food, music, medieval tradition, crafts - Umbria Jazz is an international jazz festival held in July and December in Perugia and in nearby Montone they hold a summer film festival. Medieval jousting, flag throwing and medieval crossbow competitions are held in Arezzo and Gubbio.
You can find plenty to explore and do locally - Walking, superb riding stables and a small 9 hole golf course and club (with pool) just 15 minutes away at Prato, 18 hole golf course west of Perugia, cycling - bike hire available and route maps for the local area, and mountain bilking. A small outdoor water park at Sansepolcro. Watersports at Lake Trasimeno (90 mins) aswell as boat trips to the islands and beaches by the lake.
