Home description
Monte San Martino is a medieval village, perched 600 metres above sea level, overlooking the Tenna river valley and imposing Sibillini mountains. It is an ideal base for exploring the southern half of the Marche region, being within one hour's drive from the historic cities of Ascoli Piceno, Macerata and Fermo.
The Sibillini National Park is some 20 kilometres from the village: the peaks of Mt. Vettore (2476m), Mt. Sibilla (2175m) and Mt. Priora (2332m) dominate the view from the garden of the house. The house itself is positioned at the highest point in the village, adjacent to the historic Church of Saint Martin, in a tranquil setting above the valley. The westerly outlook ensures dramatic sunsets towards the panorama of the Sibillini mountains from the garden.
The house is laid out over three floors and has been carefully restored, preserving the original 18th century plan. The house has three bedrooms, each with adjacent or en-suite bathrooms. The master bedroom has a double-bed, the other two bedrooms have twin single beds. The kitchen leads out to the garden. The garden faces due west towards the mountains. There is also a dining room adjacent to the kitchen, utility room and a large sitting room.
Within five minutes walk into the centre of the village you will find a baker, bar, two excellent restaurants, store (selling fresh fruit, meats, fresh milk), post office, chemist, petrol station and bank.

Monte San Martino area
Monte San Martino
The village has an ancient history, originally a settlement of the Picene tribes who colonised this part of Italy, before the Roman period.
Parts of the village date back to medieval times, while a good proportion of the centre was rebuilt in the early 1700s (our house follow this tradition, with parts dating back to the 1400s, while the date stone mentions the year 1736).
The village has a number of important artworks:
Pinacoteca (picture gallery). Usually open at the weekend. The ticket office is in Palazzo Ricci, in the main piazza (same door as Doctor’s surgery). There you can buy a combined ticket for the Pinacoteca (17 & 18C Oil Paintings in Palazzo Ricci) and admission to the Church of San Martino (adjacent to l‘Acolta), which has important polytypchs by Carlo and Vittore Crivelli.
The main church, adjacent to Bar Priori has an important fresco by Paganini. You can ask for the key at the bar.
La Cantina dei Papa is located at 17 via Ricci. It is a small museum of wine-making and local industries. Open only on Friday and holidays. Ask for Sig. Millozzi. Free entry.
