The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

Le Marche" the undiscovered jewel of Italy" an area totally unspoilt by tourism is dramatic and stunning. The Sibillini Mountains are a walkers' paradise and are a delight to visit all year round. In Spring and Autumn the wildflowers are in abundance and carpet the mountains and in Summer the mountain breeze is welcome. The roads are quiet and most of the surrounding hilltop towns are accessible by the back roads taking in the beautiful countryside and amazing views.
There are local markets nearly every day of the week in the surrounding towns and villages with fantastic fresh local produce, a favourite is Sarnano market on a thursday morning where there is a vibrant atmosphere.
The Conero Peninsular,an area of outstanding natural beauty offers stretches of beautiful beaches and coves.Porto Sant' Elpidio is our nearest beach and has a lovely promenade with shady pine trees.A little further along the coast Porto San Giorgio has a delightful sandy beach and the town has a lovely atmosphere, stop in one of the many bars in the old town or enjoy lunch in one of the delightful fish restaurants overlooking the Adriatic. If you feel like staying nearer to home and fancy a swim near the mountains then Lake Fiastra with lovely clear waters is perfect for a day out and a picnic.
.
The Monte San Martino area
Monte San Martino a pretty, well kept village has two main churches with excellent frescoes and paintings by Carlo Vittore Crivell. The village is well served by local shops including a "pane forno"(bread oven), small supermarket, chemist, post office, bank, doctors, two bars and two highly recommended family run restaurants. .The"Priori" restaurant and bar on the main piazza is just a minutes walk from the cottage.
"Le Querce " situated just outside the village is an agriturismo,a favourite with our guests where the"antipasti experience" is highly recommended!
There are two very friendly family owned bars both a minutes walk from the cottage .Both bars are open from early morning for that first welcoming cappuccino of the day till late at night, and a small kiosk bar which opens in the summer months in the park at the top of the village which is quite a focal point on a summer's evening and where sometimes musical entertainment is provided and you can witness the most amazing sunsets. The atmosphere in the village is very friendly and you will be made most welcome by everybody, a delightful way to immerse yourself in the true Italian way of life.
At the end of the cottage street is the large closed order of Benedictine nuns of Santa Caterina who are very rarely seen, however we did have the pleasure of meeting one of them on her way to the cemetery and offered her a lift!
We thought we would mention some of our favourite places that you may enjoy too. Sarnano is a grand old town with windy streets and a lovely piazza, you can pamper yourself at the delightful Spa or visit the Antiques Festival held here each May or just relax with a cappuccino and watch the world go by. Amandola is a favourite stop too for delicious gelati or a lunchtime aperitif at Cafe Belli especially on a Sunday morning where you can stop and people watch!
The famous Open Air Opera Festival is held at Macerata during July and August. Ascoli Piceno a little further afield has a delightful cathedral and the Piazza de Popolo is a gem especially tea at Cafe Meletti with its art nouveau interior. La Quintana (medieval pageant ) is held in Ascoli Piceno the first Sunday in August and is spectacular. Assisi is under a two hour drive through amazing scenery and is well worth a visit if you feel like venturing a little further.
