Home description
The house consists of two wings; on the top floor of the main wing are 2 bedrooms; (one double; one twin with a cot) on the next, one twin bedroom; a huge family shower room and a large through room which can be used as a bedroom. On the ground floor is a kitchen; a sitting room and a WC. Outside the kitchen is a large covered terrace: fine for shade or shelter from the rain!
THe back wing consists of a twin bedroom and a double bedroom, with a shower room and WC.
Use the house as a base to discover some of the hidden jewels of Italy: Le Marche is a landscape of hills and mountains, patchwork fields and hilltop villages with stunning views yet the seaside is only 40 minutes away. The pace of life is slow, so it can be enjoyed to the full: the cuisine is superb and shopping in local markets a joy for cooks. Enjoy eating your purchases out on the shady verandah, or lounging around the garden listening to the crickets and cicadas,.
For more active days, the area is perfect for walking: the Sibillini national park is a short drive away, and there, you can walk for a whole day without meeting anyone. The mountains are up to 2,400 m. high and the scenery and wild flowers are mindblowing. Or you can walk straight from the house, in the idyllic landscape surrounding you - perhaps you might fancy a 15-minute trot down to the river at the bottom of the valley.
You will want to visit some of the local small towns, one more evocatively medieval than the next. The larger towns of Fermo (30 mins); Macerata (45); Camerino (1 hour) are just a few of the unknown architectural treasures, while Ascoli Piceno (1 hour) is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.
Local restaurants are plentiful and cheap, serving pizze - try the bar in Penna San Giovanni - and traditional Marchigiana food. For real gourmands, there are numerous top-of-the-range "agriturismi", or famous sea-food restaurants by the sea.
A day/half-day trip to the sea is easy. The beaches are designed for Italian families: bars, restaurants, playgrounds, beach games, comfortable loungers and parasols for you to relax with every comfort. You will be able to enjoy a delicious meal (we can recommend restaurants) while your children play on the beach. The sea is shallow and safe and there are lifeguards at regular intervals.

The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Le Marche is a beautiful but little-known, central Italian region. Bounded on the East by the Adriatic, and on the West by the watershed of the Appenines, Le Marche is a mountainous region of small farms and ancient hilltop villages. Less dry than Umbria and Tuscany to the West, it has been able to keep its productive small-holdings and thriving villages as well as its famous trees: oaks on the foothills and sweet chestnuts high in the mountains. Although it lacks the concentration of art treasures found in Tuscany, it also lacks the level of tourism: once away from the resorts along the coast, tourists are almost unknown.
The house Guerrino is in Contrada Magli – a collection of about ten inhabited farmhouses spread across a south-facing hillside, below the village of Penna San. Giovanni (see pennasangiovanni.snip.net). On a small dirt road that winds through Magli - is farmhouse Guerrino. Southwest facing towards MonteVettore (7,000 ft) and overlooking the a remote and inaccessible valley, the house is surrounded by small, steep fields, woods, olive groves and vineyards. The house has a garden with wallnut and fig trees. It overlooks a small olive grove and hay fields sloping steeply away to the wooded valey below. There is a large ground floor verandah (and a huge Wallnut tree) that provide shade for eating outside.
Monte San Martino / Penna San Giovanni area
Practically any village on the map is worth a visit - they are nearly all on hill tops and have fine churches and fabulous views. There is often a playground and a bar at the top of the hill, at the Belvedere (viewing point). Montefortino and Montemonaco are closest to the mountains. Penna San Giovanni 4km away, has grand views, two bars, a playground with a view, handsome public buildings, an interesting wooden theatre, convents, churches etc. on steep cobbled streets. It has butcher’s, a baker’s, a greengrocer, and two small grocers. Servigliano is the only village/town in the area which is both in a valley and very pretty: 18th century town built to a design by Pope Pius the ?. San Ginesio is well worth the trip.
The Sea: The sea is about 25 miles on a good road. There are sandy beaches at Porto San Giorgio and San Benedetto del Tronto: Italian resorts with deck chairs and umbrellas for hire; sandy beaches, shallow water, fish restaurants and gelateria, swings and slides. . We go to Porto San Giorgio, where we rent an umbrella in the strip of beach more or less at the latitude of the Station. There is an excellent restaurant there called Il Quadrifoglio. On a busy day, be prepared to wait. Otherwise, just south of the Quadrifoglio, there is a really good tavola calda, which is a sort of a cafeteria, although the word cafeteria might give you the wrong idea.
Swimming: As well as the sea there is an outdoor pool which is generally only open in July and August. It is a very Italian affair: go there and you will see what I mean. It is in a hamlet (“frazione”) called villa Saline which is on the road between Penna San Giovanni and Sant’Angelo in Pontano: turn right towards Penna at Pilotti; turn left at T junction towards Sant’Angelo in Pontano; after 2 Kms, it is on your right. There is a municipal pool at San Ginesio which combines nicely with a trip to the market on a Sunday. Lake : Lago di Gerosa (not strictly legal but beautiful and clean), Past Comunanza on the road towards Montemonaco; lake is on Your right. Lago di Fiastra is WNW of Sarnano. It is a glorious aquamarine lake in the mountains, wonderful if you love to swim; not great on comfort and shade, but you will find some. There is one town up there where you can get lunch, otherwise bring a picnic.
Walking: Nearby are many small tracks through fields and woods. In the Sibillini mountains (a National Park), there are all types of tracks - some marked, mostly not - which are almost totally unused except by shepherds. The wild flowers are at their best in May-July, and the trees are spectacular in October/November.
Directly below the house is (10 mins down, 30 mins up) is an unvisited wild and shady stream with pools that are large enough to bath (but not swim) in.
There are some good maps in the house (I hope). One excellent walk for a hot day is to drive up to the Gola dell’Infernaccio SW of Amandola. You walk along a gorge. Don’t do it on a w/e or holiday as it is popular with the locals.
If you are feeling adventurous, you really mustn’t miss a walk on the Piano Grande , high in the Sibillini mountains W of Ascoli Piceno. Visit Castelluccio, a mountain village many miles away from any other habitations and consequently atmospheric. The famous lentils of Castelluccio are grown on the plain, cultivated in strips to give the landscape an ancient feel. The wild (and lentil) flowers are really lovely.
How to get there
Cheap flights go from London Stansted to Ancona and Pescara, costing as little as 0.001 GBP. These airports are 1 1/2 (100Kms) and 2 hours' drive from the house. Otherwise, fly and drive from Bologna, Forli', Rimini, Rome.

Further details indoors: The house is simply by comprehensively equipped for a large family - or group of adults - who want to escape from modern western life. Designed for summer living, possessions are kept to a minimum, since we were taken with the uncomplicated way in which the local people lived their lives and wanted to duplicate it in us and our children for our summer holidays. Hence, no telelvision, telephone, computer etc. (there is good mobile reception!) It is designed as a kind of mental and physical detox (without any of the nasty bits!)
Further details outdoors: The house is in its own private garden, far from other habitations. The views from the garden will fill you with a sense of well-being and joy. There is plenty of shade to escape from the midday sun. River and swimming pool are nearby. The sea (BRILLIANT for young families) and an exceptionally beautiful mountain lake are 40 mins' drive away. There are enough mountain walks to keep you going for your stay (maps and guide books can be found in the house)
