About the home

Vila Real de Santo Antonio (VRSA) where the flat is located is the right place for people who enjoy quiet and calm holidays, it's a lovely town built by Marquês de Pombal in the 18th century, commerce and tourism are nowadays the main activities of the city which has the privilege of being bounded by Guadiana estuary (south), a pinewood (west) and the Natural Reserve of Sapal (north). It is located at the border with Spain where you can get the ferry boat across Guadiana river to the Spanish border town Ayamonte (10km) and visit Huelva (65km) and Seville (150km). River Guadiana is the natural border between Portugal and Spain since Roman times, therefore the area is full of castles and old remains you can admire doing the Guadiana Cruise.

Nearby towns Castro Marim and Cacela Velha are rich in archaeology with vestiges of pre-historic Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Arab and Christian occupations. There is also a natural reserve full of wild life for nature lovers. For sun lovers you have three beautiful beaches which seem to run forever, well-known Monte Gordo, Praia de Santo Antonio and Praia dos 3 Pauzinhos, the latter used by the locals, not so crowded and more picturesque. VRSA has an attractive marina with many boats coming and going, cafés to sit and watch the activity in the river and many different shops from pottery to linen, gift shops and boutiques and a variety of cafés and restaurants to spend many relaxed hours. It is mainly a residential town with about 14,000 inhabitants and it is a very friendly place.

The Algarve / East Algarve region

East Algarve has a mild climate all year round, reason why lots of Northern European Union citizens buy property here to spend holidays and their retirement. In the «Sotavento» (Eastern part of the Algarve) and especially in VRSA council area you have Guadiana river and its marina full of sailing boats and yachts, the protected natural reserve full of wild life, the historic and archaeological remains, the beautiful woods where you can exercise (walks, racing, cycling, etc.), a sports centre and the beautiful unpolluted beaches where you can swim in calm safe blue waters. Also the gastronomy is famous for their unique specialties.

All year round there are cultural activities and during the summer there are a few festivals, such as the Seven Suns Seven Moons Festival featuring pop, ethnic and traditional music from the Mediterranean countries, the Local Gold Festival covering local music, theatre and dance and the Nights of the Enchanted Moorish Girl, reminding us of the 1001 Nights, an heritage of the Islamic presence in the Algarve, the old Gharb-al-Andalus (Algarve+Andalucia).

The Monte Gordo area

Monte Gordo is a lively seaside resort with a variety of restaurants and bars to cater to your needs, boutique shops to shop around and has a stunning beach front, ideal to play games at a safe distance from the water. If you enjoy walking take a stroll along the beach to Vila Real de Santo Antonio to the east or Manta Rota to the west, it is a flat area with many pine trees and sand dunes.

Monte Gordo has the only casino between Lamont in Spain to Vilamoura in Algarve, it offers a variety of worldly shows throughout the year and has a good restaurant so you can take in a show and dine at the same time. There are the usual slot machines & the more formal games should you choose to have a flutter (Id required). The town itself has a few high rise hotels along the main sea front road with many apartments in between to add character & diversity to the types of accommodation available. During the year ,there are many free concerts, exhibitions, fairs, street shows and beach sports to keep you entertained. Monte Gordo is popular all year round with many nationalities enjoying either the hot weather in the summer or the cooler winter sun to relax during the quieter season.

Faro International Airport, you can get cheap flights to Faro with low-cost air companies, from there you can take either a train (about 1 hour - circa 3 euros) or a bus (about 2 hours - circa 5 euros).

You can also hire a taxi, a car or private transportation from Sbvantravel to VRSA for about €45.
