The Algarve region
The Eastern Algarve is less developed than the resorts to the west of Faro, but Monte Gordo caters for most tastes. It is an all year round destination, and is perfect for family beach holidays. It is popular with holidaymakers from Portugal and the rest of Europe, particularly Holland and the UK.
There are plenty of daytime activities - and naturally the golfer is well catered for - but for the more energetic there are bicycles for hire, and a top class sports centre in Vila Real. The latest attraction is the zip wire which takes you across the Guadiana River in Spain to Alcoutim in the Algarve! The only zip wire in the world which links two countries together! Alcoutim is about a half hour drive from Monte Gordo.
4 wheel drive safaris take you into the more remote areas of the region, with river cruises from Vila Real, and coastal cruises from Tavira. Some of these trips last a whole day, and include meals and entertainment.
The region's latest attraction is Europe's longest, and only cross border, zip wire across the Guadiana River from Sanlucar in Spain to Alcoutim in the Algarve. Travel from one country to another - and travel back in time, as Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal. If you have a car, Alcoutim is about 45 minutes from Monte Gordo.
Also, organized trips are available from Monte Gordo to all the main attractions of the Algarve, and to Seville in Spain.
Monte Gordo is a resort with everything close to hand, and car hire although recommended if you want to explore the region isn't essential!
The beach is at the end of the road, and Monte Gordo bay boasts an unbroken stretch of sand stretching over a distance of about 15km from the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve in the west to the River Guadiana on the Spanish border in the east. The beaches in the nearby villages of Altura, Praia Verde, and Manta Rota are also popular, but still have acres of space, and are well worth a visit. The historic towns of Tavira and Castro Marim are only a short distance away, and the local capital of Vila Real with its marina and ferry to Spain is just a few minutes drive. To the north of Monte Gordo are salt pans and another nature reserve stretching to the Guadiana river called Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, a haven for many wading birds including heron, flamingos, and storks.
At night the town centre and seafront come alive with visitors and locals alike out for a meal, shopping, or just strolling along the esplanade before the sun goes down late in the evening. During the summer there are regular street markets, carnival processions, festivals, concerts, and funfairs, finishing off with a grand fireworks display at the end of the season - but although lively it's not really a paradise for all-night clubbers. Even so, Monte Gordo is home to one of only three casinos in the whole of the Algarve, with top class dining, cabaret shows, and gaming over two floors.
