The Algarve / East Algarve region

In the East Algarve or, like the Portuguese say: the Sotavento, which means "lee-side", you still find pure nature. Like the Ria Formosa, an extended lagoon-area along the coast from Faro to Vila Real de Sto António, the hills of the Serra de Caldeirão in the hinterland of Tavira and the river Guadiana, wich connects the Algarve with the Spanish Andalusia.
For the sea and beach-lover there are the sandy beaches of miles and miles like Ilha deTavira, Cabanas, Monte Gordo, Manta Rota, Praia Verde(Altura), Farol and Faro Island (Faro), Armona and Culatra (Olhão) en Fuzeta.
Historic, cultural and authentic places of interest are to be found among other things in Tavira, Faro, Estoi and Castro Marim.
The East Algarve has several golf courses, walking- and biking-roads, marinas , public swimming pools and sportparks. The sea-side resorts offer numerous possibilities for going out. For gastronomes there are culinary events like the Festival de Marisco in Olhão and the many fairs with specialties from the hinterland, the Serra.
Because of the favourable location the Sotavento is protected against the firm west winds. Besides an extra agreable temperature this also means safe swimming, diving and sailing on the unspoilt Atlantic coast.
The inhabitants of the East Algarve are friendly, hospitable and proud of the beauty and purity of their region. They hearty invite you to share these experiences!

Across the Spanish border still within 15-20 minutes are Isla Canela, Islantilla and the new highly rated Costa Esuri. A little further afield are the 2 El Rompido courses and Dunas de Donana.

nice quiet place although a fair walk to beautiful beaches. Good supermarket about a mile down the road to Spain, plenty of choice and cheaper than the ones in Monte Gordo.Plenty of nice bars and restaurants, the indian probably the best i've had. Take a trip on the ferry, 1.60 euro single to Ayemonte Spain from Villa Real, itself well worth a visit. The appt. owners easy to speak to and very helpful, all in all a great time was had and would definitely return next year. |

It is a cozy trimming has everything you need to spend a great holiday. How is a little out of Monte Gordo you can take steps to the village, which it does very well, and is not in the midst of confusion. I liked very much. I recommend! |

“We had a wonderful Honeymoon in Monte Gordo. Everything went like clockwork from booking to arriving at Faro airport. We took the Resort Hopper from the airport to Monte Gordo and were delivered right to the doorstep of our holiday home. The agent met us outside as arranged (at Midnight) and we were settled in within 15 minutes. The apartment was well equipped, comfortable and homely; we had everything we needed. Situated just 15 minutes walk from Monte Gordo town centre and fabulous beaches we found lovely restaurants, shops, bars and entertainment at the Casino. The beach was practically deserted and there was plenty to do, even out of season. The weather was fantastic almost every day; we experienced temperatures of up to 38 degrees centigrade whilst we were there! We found the cost of food and drinks considerably cheaper than the UK. There is an excellent, well stocked Hypermarket very close by. The buses are plentiful and cheap; we had fun visiting Vila Real de Santo Antonio which is an interesting town steeped in history, just a few kilometres from Monte Gordo. From Vila Real we took the Ferry to Spain, which took less than 30 minutes. All in all, this holiday represented exceptional value for money and we could not recommend strongly enough.” Sally-Jane & Terry Kruger |
