The Marche/Abruzzo region

The region of Le Marche has often been described as a "distillation of Italy" and this is a very good description as it sums up the fantastic diversity that makes up the region.

The west of the region hosts the Sibillini National Park with its striking mountains and wilderness just waiting to be explored - this is very popular with walkers and mountain climbers alike. The highest peak if you are feeling energetic is Monte Vettore at 8,123 feet and we can arrange a guided walk if you would prefer.

There is a legend in the mountains that there is an underworld paradise entered through a grotto in the mountains of Norcia (the west side of the Sibillini National Park). Nearby the magical lake is fed by water from the cavern. Whoever stayed longer than a year could no longer leave, but remained deathless and ageless, feasting in abundance. If you do happen to discover this on your walks please feel free to send us the GPS co-ordinates!

The central part of the region, moving east from the Sibillini has gentle undulating hills which is mostly agricultural and offers some of the best views to be found in Italy - views that rival those found in Tuscany. Here you will find field after field of olive trees, grapevines, sunflowers, peaches and pears and of course every season is different with this wonderful landscape bursting with different colours.

On top of most of the hills in this part of the region you'll discover medieval walled towns with their stunning architectural beauty which compliments the natural beauty that you'll find almost everywhere you look. Each town has it's own distinct personality and it's own brand of Italian culture. Here the markets, bars and restaurants very much cater for the warm and friendly locals (expect to see lots of arm waiving and shouting on market days - but of course always in a friendly way)!

Less than half an hour driving eastwards takes you to the Adriatic coast and there are many spots to choose from as Le Marche has 187km of coastline. The coastline is clean and well cared for offering safe swimming for families. In fact the Le Marche coast offers an incredible 25 blue flag beaches! Your nearest blue flag beaches are Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto which are about 25 minutes away.

If you like seafood this is also the place to find superb fish restaurants offering fish freshly caught that morning (we recommend the 'brodetto' - a fish soup (more like a stew) made with no less than 13 different types of fish).

Summers in this region tend to be long, dry and hot with average temperatures in the summer months of about 30 degrees (cooler in the mountains).

Montalto delle Marche

Montalto delle Marche has a population of about 2300 so is well catered for with a selection of shops, restaurants and bars and is a great place to stay if you want to experience real Italian village life without lots of tourists but please do bring your phrasebook as not much English is spoken in this part of the world.

On a Wednesday morning there is a local market where you can buy local produce. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, hams, delicious Italian pastries. But you can also buy designer handbags next to the live chicken stall so as we say - it is a bit eclectic!

Set in the heart of your village and dominating the main village square is the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta which was built in 1587 on the orders of Pope Sisto V. The pope who came from the nearby coastal village of Grottammare trained in Montalto. When he became Pope he rewarded the villagers of Montalto with this very impressive Cathedral.

The inside of the Cathedral in Montalto delle Marche is a replica of parts of the Basilica in Rome and was designed by the architect Luigi Poletti so is definitely worth a visit.
