The Marche/Abruzzo region
This area of Italy has been described as "the new Tuscany" with medieval walled towns sitting atop every hill, fields of olives and fruit trees and the blue Adriatic in the distance. There is both architectural and natural beauty almost everywhere you look, with very few tourists and an undeniable Italian culture - the markets, bars and restaurants here cater for the locals
There are two large national parks nearby - the Sibillini National Park and the Gran Sasso Park, which are the ideal destination for walkers and mountain climbers
Within half an hour are the blue-flag beaches of the Adriatic where you can relax on on hired sunbeds or bring your own beach stools to the public beaches. Grottammare is the nearest, approx 30 minutes away, with San Benedetto and the "Palm Coast" next.
The water park "Onda Blu" at Tortoreto is about 45 minutes away, a great day out for the kids
Average summer temperatures here reach a blissfully warm 25°C, with daily peaks reaching into the mid 30’s (°C). In winter, temperatures drop, and skiing is possible at Sassotetto and Gran Sasso
Montalto delle Marche
Montalto has the full range of food shops, cafes/restaurants, bank, Post-Office, Doctor's surgery, and weekly Wednesday market. There is an excellent and very reasonable pizzeria within walking distance of the house. There are many enchanting hill villages to explore within the Ascoli area, with typical stone houses, cobbled streets and panoramic views across the hills and Sibillini mountains and down onto the Tesino and Aso valleys. The city of Ascoli Piceno, an ancient Roman town, is only 25 km away, with its medieval and renaissance palazzos and grand piazzas in warm travertine stone. A visit here, with a gelato at the Caffe Meletti in Art Nouveau style, is a highlight for many visitors. Not to miss is the Quintana festival here in July and August - a medieval pageant with a jousting tournament.
Throughout the summer, there are many local 'festas', mostly food based, in the surrounding hilltop villages. Other sights nearby are the lacemakers of Offida, the Roman cisterns at Fermo, the Frasassi caves, and Jesus and Mary's house at Loreto.
