About the home

Casa Leccio is an apartment of 70 square meters (approximately 750 square
feet) which sleeps four persons. It has a small loggia and a splendid view of
the Tuscan hills. Guests of the apartment can use a shared garden and a shared
swimming pool.

It has two bedrooms, a living room with cooking area, and a bathroom. You will
access the apartment from a small loggia.

The apartment is part of an ancient farmhouse, which is located on the slope of
a gentle hill, in an area of the Tuscan countryside which remains untouched and
partly wild.

You will be far away from busy roads, and you will find that the air is clear
and perfumed, and will be able to enjoy a peaceful stay. You will be able to
look around in any direction, and your sight will span over a wide horizon of
hills, which intersect like the waves of a green sea, with plots which are
brighter where the land has been sowed and planted with vineyards, and darker
where there are small oak woods.

On a nearby hill you will be able to spot the profile of the medieval burg of
Montalcino. Montalcino is the village that lends its name to one of the most
famous wines of Tuscany and Italy: the “Brunello di Montalcino”. The village is
known for its excellent wine makers and the splendid wine cellars open to
visitors.

You will be halfway between Montalcino and San Quirico D'Orcia, just a few
kilometers south of Siena, in an area which is not crowded by tourists, yet in
an good position to visit Siena and the main art cities of Tuscany with short
trips.

The farmhouse is surrounded by 2 hectares (5 acres) of land, partly garden and
partly vineyard. It is made up of three ancient buildings, made of bricks and
stones. The buildings have been built around a nice yard paved with stones.

In the farmhouse there are six apartments of different sizes. The owners reside
on the premises, in a building close by, and will be kindly and discreetly
available for any request or information.

The three buildings on the farmhouse have been restored with loving care, and
the characteristics and the charm of once-upon-a-time country houses have been
kept untouched both in the outdoor looks and in the indoor decorations. Doors
and windows are made of wood, the floors are tiled with terracotta tiles, and
the ceilings are made with long wood beams and terracotta bricks. The decoration
is rich in items of local handicrafts.

The swimming pool is located in the middle of a large lawn, which is decorated
with bushes and flower pots, and it has a 360-degree view of the surrounding
hills. It is equipped with deck chairs and beach umbrellas, which are available
for all the guests of the farmhouse. The size of the swimming pools is 14 x 7
meters (46 x 23 feet), and it is 1.2 to 2.40 meters deep (3.9 to 7.8 feet deep).

As a guest of the farmhouse you will also have available a large and comfortable
shared TV lounge, equipped with satellite television, a table tennis table, a
bowls lane, a barbecue and a shared laundry room.

During the summer time an old railway section is reactivated for tourists. The
line goes from Siena to Grosseto, and crosses the Montalcino area, making it
possible to visit the area where the Brunello wine is made on board of an old
steam train.

The farmhouse is 8 km (5 miles) from the closest village, which is San Quirico
D'Orcia, where you will find shops and restaurant. You will only be able to
reach the village by car. On the premises there is a large parking lot.

Casa Leccio is located on the first floor, and you will reach it from the garden
along an external stairway that will take you to a covered loggia. From the
loggia you will enter the living room.

A nice ancient fireplace has been place in a corner. In the living room you will
find a table with chairs, a sofa, and a brickwork kitchenette.

The kitchenette is equipped with a four-burner cooker and a refrigerator.

From the living room you will be able to reach the bedrooms. One of the bedrooms
has a double bed, the other one has two single beds. There is also a bathroom with
shower. The rooms have windows with a view of the vegetation and of the swimming
pool.

The house is equipped with central heating.

The house is 9 km (5.5 miles) from Bagno Vignoni, 18 km (11 miles) from Pienza,
32 km (20 miles) from Montepulciano, 21 km (13 miles) from Montalcino and 22 km
(13.5 miles) from Mount Amiata. Siena is 51 km (31 miles), Chianciano, with its
famous spas, is 33 km (20 miles), and Florence is 140 km (87 miles).

The Tuscany / Siena Province region

Located in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is surely one of the most famous Italian landscapes. The essence of this beautiful region are its natural, artistic, and cultural heritage.

Bounded by the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Sea (two arms of Mediterranean), this region is divided into ten provinces, whose capitals are Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. Florence is the capital city of the region itself.

The region was populated first by the Etruscans on the 7th century BC, and about 500 years later by the Romans.

The words Humanism and Renaissance evoke Tuscany, as immediately as Pope evokes Rome: just think that between the fourteenth and the sixteenth century, both these ages were born here. The entire region attained a very important artistic role.

Indeed the fathers of Italian painting, architecture and sculpture lived in this beautiful towns: such as Cimabue, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo. This is the reason why the entire region is rich in museums where thousands of amazing works are kept. You’ll be impressed by the majesty of the many ancient palaces (for examples “Palazzo Vecchio”, “Palazzo Pitti”, “Palazzo Medici”), monasteries and villas that are springing up all over the Tuscany.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit Tuscany, because the climate is mild. Bus-lines and trains connect the larger towns, but having a car would be a great advantage, and you would be easily able to enjoy the small towns and vineyards, which represent some of Tuscany’s strong points.

The “Chiantigiana road” is a must to see: it produces some of Italy’s finest wines. This is the colourful and legendary road of the “Chianti" region. The grape cultivation dates back to the Etruscan times. One of the biggest pleasures will be sipping different wines, at the wineries or at the wine bars scattered in the towns.

What about a drop in on “Mugello”? It is a countryside surrounded by oaks, chestnut trees and by the Apennines, This land of artists and painters have been source of inspiration in its farmhouses and colours. with kind people, authentic cooking, good wine, plus a great tradition in handicrafts.

The Apuan Alps are a monumental work of the nature. They consist in some of the highest peaks in the region: This regional park sets up the chance for those who want to practice trekking, cycling, horse riding or simply walking to enjoy this beautiful landscape.

Versilia is an area of 20 km sandy beaches located in the north of the region. The seaside with the colourful bathing areas is rich in bars and meeting places. Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Massarosa, Pietrasanta, Seravezza, Stazzema and Viareggio are the towns of this beautiful coast.

Another great attraction of this region is the archipelago. The largest island is Elba: more than one hundred kilometers of coast.

Curiously enough, since the Etruscans introduced the use of fresh herbs, the Tuscan cooking is still based on vegetable dishes, bread-based soups, meats perfumed with sage, rosemary, and thyme. Moreover the secret of its success is the good care and the devotion to guarantee the quality of the products of the land... crostini of chicken liver, soups, tortelli with Bolognese sauce, “pappardelle” with hare sauce or with boar sauce, boar hunter style, fillet of beef, salted cod with tomato sauce, ricciarelli, cantucci, Tuscan salt-less bread… We’re sure your mouth is already watering!

The Montalcino / San Quirico D'Orcia area

Montalcino lies in the heart of Southern Tuscany, located at about 70 miles southwest of Florence in the famous wine region.

Back in the Middle Age, this area used to be divided into four ecclesiastic districts: Arezzo, Chiusi, Grosseto and Siena. This division reflected the ancient Etruscan lucumons of Arezzo, Chiusi, Roselle and Volterra. Many remains of that age have been preserved in the local Archaeological museum of Montalcino.
The local history is famous for a number of mysterious stories and tales that throughout the decades have been handed down from father to son. The main reason for all this mysterious origin of the village is due to the destruction of the Abbazia of St Antimo, where the ancient archives was retained.

The most recent and relevant information about Montalcino date back at the XII century, when the town was contended between Siena and Florence. Very soon Montalcino had to preserve its freedom from the threat of Siena, when the dark menace of a war was surrounding Tuscany. The ancient castle was firstly conquered and destroyed by Siena, but later on it was reoccupied by the local noble families, thanks to the help of Florence, which was the main Siena’s enemy, contending wealth and opulence of the area. Throughout the further ages, the town has always been disputed and a classic Tuscany power struggle.

Once Montalcino got back to Siena in 1269, in order to avoid other defeats and to ensure a peaceful era, it was built a new castle: the so-called “Rocca”, with the aim to control the centre of the town. The castle is still intact and still represent the best symbol of Montalcino and its people: a classic example of Medieval Italian castle. It was built following the ancient town walls, reporting a pentagonal plan with towers in each of the five corners. Beside the South-Eastern towers, you will find the donjon while inside you can admire the abbey. Going down to the centre, you will certainly notice on the right the Monastery of St Agostino and a lovely church dated back to the XIV century, followed by Palazzo Vescovile.

This is a magnificent evidence of history and culture that provides to all visitors an unique experience to live and remember forever: once you start discovering the old town centre with all its narrow and lovely streets, you can’t stop from falling in love with all the magic atmosphere of Tuscany, something that you will bring home and make feel yourself richer.

Brunello di Montalcino is a red Italian wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino. Brunello, is the unofficial name of the clone of Sangiovese grown in the Montalcino region. The Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) almost thirty years ago and that was just the beginning of an astonishing “career” for the local wine, that has become The Italian wine for all the wine connoisseur. It is indeed one of the Italy's best-known and most expensive wines ever, but It’s definitely worth it.
