About the home
Maison de Lavande is a large converted farmhouse, ideal for families as it sleeps 8 people in two double and two twin-bedded rooms. It is also cosy for couples as two bedrooms and a bathroom on one floor, and two bedrooms and a shower room are on another. It is situated in the hill-top village of Montagrier which has its own post-office, local store, bike-hire centre, church, art gallery and restaurant. The restaurant has either indoor or al fresco dining underneath a large vine-covered terrace. Just two minutes walk from the house is the village green alongside an avenue of chestnut trees, leading to a historic Roman church and elevated views over the river Dronne valley. On balmy evenings, boules is played along the chestnut tree avenue which is fun to watch, or try for yourself - there are several sets of boules at the house.
Colourful and bustling markets in the nearby towns of Tocane-Saint-Apre, Riberac and Lisle sell the region's abundance of fruit and vegetables, home-made cheeses, local beef, foie gras and wine. The markets are renowned in the Dordogne and are a joy to visit. In the Summer months there is a plentiful supply of delicious fresh fruit and vegetables grown locally, as well as sumptious pastries, flans and bread in the local boulangerie. If home dining is preferable to visiting one of the many nearby restaurants, the choice and quality of fresh produce is second to none. Maison de Lavandes overlooks the beautiful River Dronne valley, it is a very agricultural area with fields of grazing cattle alongside arable crops such as sunflowers and wheat.
Walking and cycling are both very popular, with designated and well marked cycle tracks that provide circuits for all abilities, ranging from 5km - 50 km in distance. The river provides much tranquility and beauty, and canoes can be hired at several places locally. A campsite in the nearest town of Tocane-St-Apre has the river Dronne running through it and it has a beach area which is ideal for young children, plus tennis courts for hire for the more energetic.
Maison de Lavandes will give you a peaceful and relaxing holiday where you can enjoy beautiful views on the terrace or under the shade of one of the walnut trees. There are many books and games to enjoy playing with the family or friends.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Dordogne is a department of the Aquitaine region in south west France. It is a very agricultural region and is well known for it's food, including walnuts, sunflowers, wine, cheese and soft fruits such as apricots, peaches and nectarines.
There are many historical monuments to look around in the well known town of Brantome which is only 25 minutes drive from Montagrier. Brantome is also known as the Venice of Perigord as it is situated with the river Dronne encircling the town.
Colourful and bustling weekly markets in all the villages and towns display and sell a wonder of fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, nuts, pastries and other culinary delights.
Aubeterre sur Dronne is famous for a 12th century church carved out of a rock face overlooking the town and is well worth a visit.
The Montagrier area
Montagrier is a beautiful village situated at the top of a hill and therefore benefits from incredible views from all sides of the village, over agricultural fields and pasture land where cattle and calves graze effortlessly. There is much to do in Montagrier, there are well marked walks and designated cycle tracks, some of which are fairly easy and others are more of a challenge. There is a well used bike hire centre in Montagrier, close to the church. There is a riding school 2 miles away in the town of Tocane, and canoe hire from Tocane too, or further upstream in Lisle or Brantome for those who want to enjoy a picnic on the river and spend half a day enjoying the kingfishers and herons seen every day fishing from the river Dronne. There is also a restaurant, post office and Roman church with the most amazing accoustics.

Guestbook for Maison de Lavande
"We stayed for a week in Chanterelles in October 2011 when the walnuts were lying on the ground under the trees in the mellow sunshine. We felt privileged to stay in such a comfortable house that had the friendly atmosphere of a well-loved family home. It is full of interesting nooks and crannies and tucked away corners and the views from the windows of the surrounding countryside with its rolling hills and valleys are so beautiful. Montagrier is the perfect place to stay being a very picturesque village with lovely walks right on the doorstep. I heartily recommend it" Review by Archie Hinchcliffe
