Home description
Our house was built in two parts. The larger part, which includes the large lounge with its beautiful ceiling in natural, honey-coloured stone, was originally part of the Palais de la Farinelle, serving as the stables in the sixteenth century.
The other part, where the kitchen is to be found on the ground floor, was a nineteenth century addition, although we have had a brand new kitchen put in, making it possible for four people to eat at the kitchen table in the bright surroundings of a modern, fully equipped kitchen.
The two parts are connected on both ground and first floor by three steps, which, together with the two staircases, give the whole building a feeling of being the very opposite of a four-square, boring house. It takes a few reconnaissance trips before you finally work out what is where!
The front yard is attractively painted and can be used for sun-bathing or having lunch in, though the back garden, with its thirteenth-century mud wall and beautiful old stone wall, which used to be an arch over a thoroughfare, is better suited for sitting in peace and quiet. There is a lot of sun in the garden until late afternoon, and in the evening it is pleasant to sit and watch the swallows and house-martins, accompanied by two or three bats, flitting overhead.
Enjoy the sunshine!

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
The surrounding area offers immense possibilities for both sightseeing, relaxation and sport of various sorts. Bike-rides to the south quickly bring you to the lovely town of Mèze, with its pretty port and small but sandy beaches, ideal for small children as the slope into the water is not steep and there is no undertow. Sète is to be seen in the background.
To the north, the rolling countryside takes you through miles and miles of vineyards with the Causses mountains in the distance.
Within easy reach, there are many interesting and famous places. Lesser known perhaps is the Roman road (Via Domitia) which runs just north of Mèze and the mosaic floors of a beautiful Roman villa in Loupian, also near Mèze, or the medieval town of Minerve and the Roman citadel, west of Béziers, called Oppidum d’Ensérune, all well worth a visit.
Better known are Béziers itself and the Canal du Midi (see photo), or Montpellier, Sète and Agde, all within comfortable driving distance, not to mention Narbonne, Gruissan or even Carcassonne, Nîmes and Uzès. Marseillan has a beautiful little harbour and lovely restaurants.
Montagnac area
Montagnac, a small, medieval town in the Languedoc surrounded by vines, lies 10 miles from the sea and about 25 miles west of Montpellier. It has a long history but what is now of interest is in the old town, built in the Middle Ages and extended in the sixteenth century.
Our house is plumb in the middle of the old part of the town, a two-minute walk from the twelfth century fortified church, one of the many interesting buildings to be seen.
Every Friday in the summer, there is a guided tour of the town and for those whose French is good enough, it is well worth going along.

Further details indoors: The lounge has ample cupboard space, a large dining room table which can seat ten or even twelve people if necessary, and a suite of two armchairs and a sofa with a television hovering near the grandfather clock behind them. The large open fire (albeit with a glass window in front of it – often better value than the television programmes!) occupies the wall opposite the entrance door. Above the entrance there is a new air-conditioning unit which provides heat in the winter as well as cooling the air in summer.
Upstairs, there are two bathrooms, making it possible for up to eight people to use the house without getting in each other’s way too much. There are potentially six bedrooms, though we have only equipped four of them as yet with beds! The main bedroom, above the lounge, has a large double bed (1.80m), a large wardrobe and two bedside tables. If air conditioning is needed in summer, there is a unit in the room (photo above).
The second bedroom, above the kitchen, has a double bed (1.40m) and a medium-sized wardrobe, with one bedside table. On the floor above, there is the third bedroom, again with an air-conditioning unit if needed.
Further details
