Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
Even though it is renowned for its heritage dating back to ancient Greek times and its climate with 300 plus days of sunshine per year, the Languedoc region of France remains one of France's best-kept secrets.
The capital of the Languedoc is Montpellier. With its chic, cosmopolitan shops and historic sites Montpellier frequently tops polls as the best city in France in which to live and is well worth a visit. Its architecture ranges from perfectly preserved Roman structures to the ultra modern and it is the most pleasant place in which to spend a day or even longer.
Béziers is a short drive from the property and is also worth a visit with its strong Spanish culture and its medieval buildings recalling the siege by Simon de Montfort who took the town and killed 20,000 Cathar heretics in July 1209.
Just 5 minutes across the river Hérault is the beautiful old town of Pézenas. Here you'll find a variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets as well as a whole host of craft shops in the old town (which remain open until midnight on Wednesdays and Fridays in the summer). Also in July and August is the famous Mirondela dels Arts cultural event with theatrical, dance and musical performances as well as street events. There are also two big supermarkets in Pézenas.
In contrast, in the lively town of Cap d'Agde you will find all the activities from funfairs to casins, from nightclubs to outdoor cinema that you would associate with any major seaside resort.
There is excellent bathing and beaches on the Mediterranean, the Etang de Thau, the River Hérault and the Lac du Salagou. The nearest beach is in Meze 12 kms from the property. A variety of beaches on the Med from the relatively secluded with few facilities to the more lively with restaurants and bars are within a short drive. Most beaches are of fine sand and shelve gently making them child-friendly. Boat hire, sea fishing, sub aqua and a variety of water sports can be arranged.
I8 hole golf courses are available at Béziers, Cap d'Agde, Juvignac and La Grande Motte all within reasonable driving distance. There is a pretty 9 hole course at Lamalou le Bains.
Whatever your special interest may be we can tailor make a holiday to meet your specific requirements. Whether you want to go horse riding, enjoy the fantastic fishing, explore the area's rich history from the Greeks to the Romans, from the Saracens to the Cathars; or simply get to know the excellent value for money provided by the local cuisine we can help you. We have in the past also organised holidays for those with interests in cycling, antiques, sailing, astronomy, painting and bird watching.
Or if you want to discover more about the excellent quality and value for money of our local wines we can use our local contacts to arrange for visits and tastings to a variety of producers.
The Montagnac area
10 minutes walk away is the medieval village of Montagnac which has lively bars and restaurants and can meet your everyday shopping needs with bakeries, a butcher, delicatessens, stalls for locally grown fruit and vegetables, a newsagents (English papers on the same day - if you're quick!), bank, post office and a shop for oysters, mussels etc. There is a small well stocked supermarket. On Fridays, there is a colourful market where you can buy local produce and specialities such as shellfish and charcuterie.
And of course right on the doorstep there is an abundance of superb local wines to enjoy during your stay and to take home with you.

We have stayed at Domaine de l'Hortevieille 2 years running and would stayed a 3rd but wanted to being in the UK for the Olympics. Both times, we had 2 families with 6 children in total and really enjoyed our time. The kids loved the pool, tennis court and assorted dogs and horses. The accommodation is very comfortable and relaxed. The owners, Malcolm and Alyson, are lovely, always helpful and have a great knowledge of the area. The location was great with easy travel to the beach, local towns, larger towns and of course the vineyards are not far away. On both occassions, the family staying in the adjoining apartment were also very nice and with the family feel, the children often all played together. We will be going back again. |
