Home description

The house is detached and has all modern facilities, despite being situated in the heart of the Normandy countryside. One of the strongest points of the property is the fact that the double bedrooms are all of a good size - no squashed-in single rooms!

The lounge/kitchen is also spacious, with beamed ceiling and old oak parquet wooden flooring. The room is purpose designed and does not, unlike many gites, have to double as a sleeping area. So it is possible to watch television when others have gone to bed. There is both French television (useful for watching the weather forecast!) and many English channels (via satellite).

° Very quiet location, with spectacular views - ideal either for romantic getaway or family holiday
° Only 25 mins drive to the sea
° Not far from many famous attractions - e.g. Mont St. Michel (World Heritage Site), the waterfalls at Mortain, the Enchanted Village at Bellefontaine, Ange Michel (children's adventure park), Villedieu (The "Town of Copper"), zoo at Champrepus...and many more!!
° House well suited for holidays, including 3 large double bedrooms and spacious kitchen/diner/lounge
° Large green area to the front of the house, for your exclusive use
° Plenty of parking space

° NEW! A six hole golf course/driving range has recently opened, within 10 minutes drive of the property. On the same site there is also an excellent equestrian centre, ideal for children learning to ride horses.

NEW! 10% discount in June, July and August for couples with no accompanying children! Request before booking.

The Normandy / Manche region

The Normandy countryside is much loved by holidaymakers, because it reminds them of what the countryside used to look like decades ago in other countries, prior to urban sprawl! Mile after mile of rolling fields, with hedgerows, beautiful trees and lots of animals. The area offers not just breathtaking views, but also a peaceful setting, ideal for relaxing, walking, cycling or exploring in the car. The local cafes and restaurants offer wonderful food at incredibly low prices (by British standards). The climate is like the south of England, but a little warmer!

An excellent town worth visiting is Villedieu des Poeles, which means "Gods town of the frying pans". The town specialises in making/selling pans in copper, plus a museum dedicated to the same theme. The shops are elegant and offer many items suitable as souvenirs (not just pans, far from it!)

Other attractions well worth seeing are:
Mont St. Michel
The waterfalls at Mortain
The Enchanted Village at Bellefontaine
Ange Michel (for children - adventure park)
Zoo at Champrepus

Mont St Michel / Le Petit Celland area

The village has a pretty church and a bar run by English owners. There is a small lake in one direction and a forest and small river in another. The famous GR22 walking route passes near the village. Just north of the village there are the historical "Three Crosses" (Trois Croix), with a picnic area and a view that defies words!

In summer there is an outside swimming pool at nearby Brecey. There is a market there on Friday mornings. There are a fair range of shops there, also restaurants, cafes, and a "Super U" supermarket.

For bigger shopping, the town of Avranches offers almost everything you could want, including three large supermarkets. There is an excellent tourist centre there, too, as well as a Saturday market, lots of restaurants, and the famous "Jardin des Plantes" (park) with a view of St. Michel.

Further details indoors:
The windows are double glazed, with shutters for use if you like a dark bedroom! There are electric heating convectors (wall mounted, with heat level thermostats) for the cold seasons. There are two WCs - a real bonus when urgency calls!

There is one bedroom downstairs, with shower/toilet adjacent. The shower, however, is not recommended for those who are disabled, frail or obese, as the base is raised and the access doors are not wide. There is a feature spiral staircase leading from that bedroom to another upstairs, which is especially light and spacious.

If greater privacy is required, there is a third double bedroom in the room above the lounge, which is accessed via an open tread straight staircase. There is the convenience of having a bathroom/toilet adjacent.

Please note regarding children. The property is suitable, but care must be taken on the staircases, as in any property with an upstairs floor. Anyone booking must accept full responsibility for all child(ren)'s safety and bring/install a child safety gate. Children must be supervised at all times.

Unlike the vast majority of holiday rental properties in the area, we allow pets to stay in the house, subject to a modest charge to cover extra cleaning. Any person(s) staying with a pet is required to keep it under control at all times and not to allow it to enter bedrooms or sit on furniture.

There are stunning countryside views from the property. The views from the upstairs windows are especially memorable and often commented upon by people staying here.

Further details are available on our website - see "Contact details" at the bottom of this listing.

Further details outdoors:
The very large grassed area to the south (front) of the property is always available for the use of guests.

There are several trees and beautiful views, perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine (or anything else).

The land to the west of the property is also available for use, except when our sheep are in residence! An outside table and chairs are provided for relaxing outside.

Guestbook for La Gandonnière

We had a lovely holiday here. Set in a rural location with great views. Close to Brécey (5 min drive) for fresh bread, supermarket and swimming pool. Lots in the local area - drive to beaches not too far, plus local zoo and adventure park. The children liked seeing the near by horses, chickens, ducks and even fed and kept the water for the sheep topped up. Inside everything looks almost new as its obviously been very recently renovated to a great standard. Wooden and laminate floors plus very large rooms. Two modern bathrooms. Everything you need is included and the English Satellite TV is a real bonus. Very helpful owners - English spoken and they live near by and great communication from booking stage onwards. Thanks for a great holiday.
(Paul, Herne Bay)

The property was lovely and Peter and Tamara were great people who looked after us very well. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending this property to family and friends.
(Julie, Scarborough)

The cottage and the owners were fantastic. The warm welcome and gifts after a 14 hour drive was greatly appreciated, as was the adaptability of the length of stay. The cottage was clean, spacious and well equipped. The children loved having resident sheep to talk to. Although blissfully remote, it was very easy to get to every convenience you could want. Many thanks for an enjoyable stay.
(Katy, Northampton)
