The Normandy / Manche region

Normandy is a beautiful region of France not only steeped in history but with a coastline and culture to match!
Where to start….for historians it is the home of Mont St.Michel - one of France's most visited monuments - well-known for it's impressive spring and autumnal tides, You can enjoy it's beauty not only by a visit inside but on foot or horse-back across the Baie - it is a haven for wildlife. Normandy was the home of William The Conqueror and also played a vital part during World War 2 in the Liberation of France - St.Mere Eglise, Avranches, The D-Day beaches and the many cemeteries are testament to this.
The cuisine is what you would expect from an area rich in dairy products - when combined with the fresh seafood and local drinks of cider and Calvados they produce a spectacular menu choice.
The coastline and beaches are in abundance for those who love the beach, as are the country lanes for those who love outdoor pursuits.
There is, quite simply, something for everyone!
The Mont St Michel area
Beauvoir, our local village and the last before you reach Mont St.Michel, has many hotels, bars, shops and restaurants and at the side of the River Couesnon, with a beautiful view of The Mont, there is a picnic area and children’s playground. Cycles are available for hire and Alligator Bay – a reptilarium – will keep the children amused. For anglers there are three rivers in close proximity – the nearest being the Couesnon – and there is a fishing shop in Pontorson for your needs. The Hippodrome holds regular meetings for horse trotting.
Organized horse treks and walks across the Baie are also available. If you fancy a Micro-flight – it’s here!
Our nearest town is Pontorson, very old – the church dates from the 12th Century – and also very pretty – again with a variety of shops, restaurants and supermarkets. Kayaks can be hired and there is a good local market on Wednesdays - particularly for fresh, local produce. Vide Greniers are also popular in many local places.
The are two WW2 cemeteries (American and German) within 20km and the motorway is accessible within 3 km to give you easy access to a host of other places to visit in both Brittany and Normandy.
It really is impossible to state everything the area has to offer – we would love you to visit and see for yourselves!

Guestbook for Sunset Cottage
Mr.&Mrs.A. McMurdo, Cheshire.
My husband and I stayed here with 2 friends in the summer and had an amazing time, better than we expected and would strongly recommend this for a peaceful relaxing holiday with friends or family.
It is such a beautiful property and has been renovated to a very high standard. It is in an ideal location, being only a half hour drive from the port and in such a peaceful, rural setting, yet close to all local amenities (you can even see the Le Mont Saint-Michel from the garden). The English owners reside in the property next door during the summer months and were very friendly and easy to get hold of if we needed anything, this was very useful and they had lots of good advice about places to eat / visit etc. This said, we did not find that having the owners next door was a concern, they left us to it and we could really let our hair down and enjoy ourselves.
One additional point to note - a car is recommended if wanting to visit beaches / towns further afield – we took a day trip to Jersey which was definitely worth a visit!

Lovely place to stay – home from home and clean. Couldn’t believe we had found somewhere so nice for our first trip to France. Just want to thank Pat and Ian for all their help while we were there. We are booking for next year.

Comfortable, home-from-home accommodation with lots of thoughtful personal touches around the gite.
We were a little concerned about finding the gite as we were driving from Calais but the travel directions you provided were excellent. We didn't detour once!
The information pack of local amenities and places to visit was a welcome and thoughtful addition.
The location is perfect for a relaxing break or for sightseeing, with so many places within easy daily travelling distance. mont St Michel and San Malo are a must!
All-in-all we had a fabulous 2 weeks and will definitely be back - thank you.
Wendy K., Mottram,
Our holiday at Sunset Cottage began with a very warm and friendly welcome from Pat and Ian who could not have done more for us throughout the duraton of our stay. Myself and my two boys were very comfortable in this beautiful spacious gite which has a modern bathroom and kitchen and is immaculately clean throughout! The property has a tranquil feel, away from noise and traffic - the rural roads are great for family bike rides! Due to the central location we were able to make lots of trips including the D-Day beaches, the cemetery, Mont St Michel, St.Malo plus more in Brittany. We will definitely be returning to Sunset Cottage in the future and I’ll be recommending it to all my friends!
