Monsegur Gironde area
Monségur (is 5 km away) is a pretty XIII century Bastide town set around a market square which is host to a weekly market and also a weekly night market within the peak summer season. There are cafés, bars, boulangerie, pharmacy, supermarket, banks and popular pizzeria/restaurant which hosts weekly live music, other restaurants are also located in and around the town. It is known for its famous Jazz Festival - Monségur 24 Hours du Swing that takes place every July. It's an unforgettable weekend of jazz, wine and dance.
The name Monsegur literally means ‘safety on a hill’. This picturesque small town still has some of its old Ramparts dating back to the 13th century. This town and area is closely linked with Eleanor d'Aquitain who married King Henry II of England. The wrought iron covered market square is not only home to the weekly market but, also hosts the many festivals and events throughout the year. The bars, restaurants and shops that surround the square are covered by stone vaulted archways.
The views surrounding Monsegur are nothing but beautiful countryside and the meandering river Dropt. At the eastern part of this hill is the rural area of Montignac. At the end of the promontory looking out over the Dropt valley is the house, La Maison Montignac. In the far distance set on another hill is the castle of Duras, this is lit up at night giving a fantastic vista across the valley. Laying in bed at night in the 'Master bedroom' you have a clear line of sight all night to the lit up castle in the distance.
The town of Duras, perched on an escarpment above the river Dropt valley is a few kilometres away. Here are local shops, bars and restaurants as well as the Château of the Ducs de Duras, now a museum. The château hosts concerts and events including a wine fair in late July or August, featuring the local appellation - Les Côtes de Duras. Duras has a lively open air market Monday mornings where locals sell fresh produce, fish, meats, baguettes and pastries, household goods and flowers.
