The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia is simply wonderful. They say that Puglia is not a place you pass through to go somewhere else. If you want to appreciate it, you have to come on purpose, here into the heel of Italy. Here is the last strip of land which, according to legend, must either be visited whilst you are alive, or by your soul when you are dead. These land are very special, seductively attractive, unique, unrepeatable and marvellous.
Puglia is a stunning discovery.
From the villages of the Subappennino Dauno to the rupestrian settlements of Murgia, from the small urban miracles of Valle d'Itria to the baroque beauties of the historical centres of Salento: Puglia is a case of priceless art.
A happy connection between art and culture, a place where the traces of the past are marks of a very ancient history, starting from prehistory.
To discover its treasures it is possible to run through the paved alleys of the small towns, visit museums and picture galleries, attend didactic laboratories and take part to the interactive paths at the discovery of the extraordinary artistic heritage of Puglia.
Puglia is an oasis of beauty.
By bike at the discovery of natural reserves, on foot for a naturalistic excursion, on the saddle of a donkey to admire uncontaminated landscapes: Puglia is always an adventure.
Parks, damp areas, marine areas, in Puglia nature has the charm of discovery and the mystery of uncontaminated beauty. Puglia is the natural habitat for adventure, a green-hearted land that invites you to cross it, searching for breath-taking panoramas, protected plants and animals and people who take care of environment.
Puglia never stops charming thanks to its wild nature and its uncontaminated landscapes, to live and discover through its activities: trekking, bird-watching, sensorial paths and didactic laboratories.
In Puglia history is alive
In Puglia the past lives through the rituals and the traditions of the popular memory, in a 12-months calendar made of patronal festivals, parades, religious celebrations and historical commemorations.
In Puglia faith and devotion melt together with the popular feeling and give life to events having a great emotive participation, in which the audience is immersed into a suggestive atmosphere, charged with sensations.
Each town has its rich heritage of traditions, jealously protected and passed through the perpetual telling of uses and habits, because the past is a precious resource for the future of Puglia.
Puglia is a land that fills the senses.
In Puglia the taste of discovery is a journey around the countryside, among wine cellars and farmhouses that tell the history and the traditions of the peasant world. Strong flavours, recipes jealous of the past, expert hands that repeat ancient gestures, in Puglia cuisine has still the taste of the past.
The best way to taste Puglia is to lose yourself in the perfumes of its festivals, taste a glass of wine in the wine cellars of the Apulian producers, learn the art of coking in gastronomic laboratories that teach how to make bread, discover the territory through interactive paths to live, for example, the experience of milking or harvesting.
Grazie Discovering Puglia
Monopoli is a lovely town on the sea.
The CATHEDRAL - it is one of the most attractive examples of Baroque in the entire Apulian region. Its imposing monumental front is flanked on the left by an elegant bell tower that has markedly projecting cornices separating its floors. Notable is the Byzantine icon portraying the Madonna della Madia - legend tells that the sacred image was washed up from the sea on a stack of trunks, that were then used for the building of the trussed roof - very well-preserved and of fine workmanship, it dates from 1280.
SANTA MARIA DEGLI AMALFITANI - a Romanesque building erected at the beginning of the twelfth century on a pre-existing rock settlement.
ABBEY OF SANTO STEFANO a fortified complex built in 1086, the remains of an old church survive in the inner courtyard, still inside there are the visible remains of the Roman settlement of Turris Paola, one of the landing places for nearby Egnazia.
The CASTLE bounded on three sides by the sea and protected on the fourth by a moat that no longer exists, it was used as a prison until the beginning of the twentieth century, the castle has been recently restored and today houses the Municipal Archaeological Museum on its first floor.
PURGATORIO CHURCH with images of skeletons on its doors. Inside you will find familiar Baroque interior but on the adjusting chapel you will find mummies of some local citizens. If the church is closed then you can watch some of the mummies through the street window.
PALAZZO PALMIERI central square of the Centro Storico.
MADONNA DEL SOCCORSO CHURCH old grotto with frescoes was dug out of a natural cavity in the rock.
