The Puglia region
Monopoli is a charming town located 50 km away from the capital of the region Bari.
It's known for clear sea, sandy beaches, nightlife and his medieval old town.
You can visit valuable and historic monuments and churches as Maria SS. della Madia Cathedral. It's in baroque style and decorated with polychrome marbles.
Its romanesque origin has undergone many changes and in 1742 was almost completely rebuilt. The archeological remains still lie beneath the Cathedral.
Well worth the visit to Carlo V Castle, a 16th-century fortress recently restored and currently used for exhibitions and events, Santa Maria degli Amalfitani Church, built in the XII century by Amalfi's sailors survivors of a shipwreck, as a sign of gratitude to the Virgin Mary, and the rocky Church Madonna del Soccorso, ancient harbor at Normans time, then sanded to prevent attacks maritime. Actually it lies 6 metres below street level.
During a walk in the old town centre you will see an enchanting sea view from Porta Vecchia, the antique entrance with fortified walls, Piazza Garibaldi with restaurants and souvenir shops, quayside with the typical venetian Palazzo Martinelli and the oldest square in Monopoli Piazza Palmieri. Here is Palmieri Palace.
The modern city is centered around Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, also known as the Borgo, where you will find shops, boutiques and bars.
Monopoli is a famous seaside resort and has a scenic coastline that stretches over 13 km and more than 25 bays, among which we can mention Porto Rosso, Cala Paradiso, Lido Colonia, Porto Camicia e Porto Ghiacciolo.
Capitolo Area is very popular in summer and offers lond sandy shores and many bathhouses.
Monopoli also has an extensive countryside with old olive trees, carob and almond trees, and Mediterranean maquis. That's the reason why Monopoli is also called “100 districts city”.
