Home description
We are in the heart of Aquitaine, close to lively villages and renowned local markets. There are hilltop villages, castles, historic bastide towns and river scenery to explore, all within 50km radius, and plenty of outdoor activities, from riding to boating.
Cayrou is a wonderful family summer holiday house, masses of character - Quercy stone and chestnut beams - easy to run, large enough for a big party. Sleeps 8 in comfort - one bedroom with king size bed, one triple with double and one single bed, one twin and the double master bedroom: no sofabeds! The kitchen is extremely well equipped. Meals can be en famille at the huge dining table, round the log fire or in the kitchen out of season, outside by the pool, under the trees or on the terrace in summer.
The 2ft thick stone walls keep the house delightfully cool even in the hottest summer, and there are electric and log fire options for cooler evenings out of season.
Local events include festivals, evening markets, mediaeval banquets and more. We are only 1.5km from all services in Libos, and 5 from a superb hypermarket with internet cafe.
Christmas at Cayrou! Underfloor heating, logs for fire, Christmas tree and candles, all included - even a home made Xmas pud......International carols in the square - .A wonderful family celebration into the New Year.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region
The Lot valley is similar to, but less touristy than, the Dordogne. It's farming country, famous for ducks, geese, fruit, and Bergerac wine. There are fascinating "bastide" towns to visit, some built by the English during the 100 years' war. The green and fertile landscape includes lots of plum and walnut orchards, and chestnut trees. Breathtaking views from hilltop villages and castles.
A lovely climate, warm summer evenings but cooler night and morning. Blossom in April, flowers - roses, wisteria - everywhere in June - autumn folliage of trees and vines.
Cities within reach by train/car include Cahors, Perigueux, Toulouse, Bordeaux - but there's lots to see locally: see below.
Monflanquin / Condezaygues area
There are superb châteaux within easy reach at Bonaguil (10k) and Monbazillac (near Bergerac). Museum of wine in Bergerac, and many excellent vineyards. River trips in summer. "Bastide" towns like Monflanquin, Pujols, Monpazier, Domme. Wonderful local markets, especially at Libos (1.5k) and Villeneuve sur Lot. Riding at St Front. For children, theme Parc Walibi at Agen, Z'Animoland near Villeneuve, Naturoparc at Penne, or the lovely "Magic Cauldron" farm where you can feed the baby animals.
Many farms offer tours and sell from farm shops. There are excellent, and still very reasonable, local restaurants, and we leave a folder with recommendations for you to try. There are lots of festivals, especially of wine/chestnuts/plums - anything really! - through the summer and particularly in autumn. The best is the famous Mediaeval festival at Monflanquin in mid-August.
The "night markets", held in most sizeable places in July/August, are a special feature. You turn up, wander round the stalls buying your supper - anything from duck kebabs to bowls of frites - and wine, and sit at long tables in the square - a good chance to meet French and English people, and to try the local produce.
How to get there
A very easy drive (450 miles/720km), mostly motorway) from Poole/Weymouth/St Malo with Condor ferries, an easy drive from other Channel ports, or cheap flights with Ryanair or Flybe to Bergerac (hire car essential) from London, Midlands or West Country, or Eurostar/TGV to Agen (hire car essential).
Advice on travel options available on request.

Further details indoors: A former barn, stunningly converted retaining enormous chestnut beams, thick stone walls - even the original mangers have been incorporated! Downstairs floors are tiled. The "American" kitchen has marble worktops, and behind it is a utility room with butler sink and laundry facilities. There is a dining area leading from here, with French doors to the terrace. Both French and UK freeview TV are available. There is a double door giving on to the really amazing central room (70 sq.m) with long dining table, huge fireplace and masses of seating.
Just off this room is a large double bedroom and a tiled shower room with WC - ideal for older people. A mezzanine gallery, lined with books, gives on to the upstairs bedrooms, bathroom and WC.
Three sets of French windows lead from the kitchen/diner on to the terrace. The large, tiled pool area is perfect for relaxing on the sunbeds - Roman steps lead to the shallow end. At night, with the underwater lighting, candles on the table, and a barbecue, it's magical.
Further details outdoors: The garden has an ancient mulberry tree, also walnut, fig and hazelnut trees. It's very private, and there's plenty of outdoor furniture. The pool has underwater floodlights, and there's a gas BBQ. Lots of room for children/dogs to play, and there's a boules set.
You will see from the map that the railway branch line passes nearby. There are only two or three local 2- or 3- coach trains a day so it's not a problem. The local station is 2km, and trains travel between Agen and Perigueux, including a stop at the world famous prehistoric caves at Les Eyzies.
Local roads are excellent and usually very quiet - driving is a pleasure.
There are good small restaurants serving local produce - especially duck - and wine. You can stroll in the garden, or in the orchard close by, cycle the quiet lanes or drive to explore the nearby villages.
