The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

Renowned for its long hot summers, Aquitaine covers the whole of the south west corner of France. It is the country's third largest region and takes in such well-known places as Gascony (dubbed France's answer to Tuscany), the Dordogne, Béarn, Basque Country and the western side of the Pyrénées.

Major cities in Aquitaine include Bordeaux, Biarritz and Perigueux.

The departments of the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne make up Inland Aquitaine and are best known for their castles, medieval villages, bastide towns, beautiful countryside & scenery and of course the rivers - Dordogne and Lot.

Monflanquin / Cancon area

We are approximately a 15 minute car ride from the beautiful bastide town of Monflanquin, said to be one of the best intact examples of a bastide town. Set on a hilltop, it offers far-reaching views across open countryside, to Chateau Biron in the distance.

There are several good restaurants in Monflanquin, mostly around the central square.
The pretty central square hosts a weekly market, full of local produce and of course the famous Agen prunes.

The busiest days in Monflanquin's annual calendar are the medieval days - a couple of days in the summer, when the town has a medieval festival, filling the town with exhibitions of falconry, old working methods, people dressed in 'olden days' clothes and so on. It shouldn't be missed if you are in the area!

******************************************

The gite is situated between the villages of Lougratte (approx. 3km) and Cancon (approx. 5km)

The village of Cancon was founded in 1255 and a castle was built into the hillside like a bastide. Unfortunately the castle no longer exists, Prince de Pons ordered its demolition in 1739. However, if you take a walk through the medieval quarter of the village, with its small streets lined with fifteenth century colombage houses, you will arrive at the old site of the castle, and be able to take in the views across the village roofs, the orchards of plums & hazlenuts and the countryside which stretches out as far as Monbahaus, Montastruc and Biron (in the Dordogne).

Amenities in Cancon: butcher, baker, tabac, pharmacy, bar, casino supermarket, fuel station, doctor. Small weekly market Mondays

Lougratte village has an 18-acre lake where it is possible to hire pedalos or just enjoy a dip and relax on the sandy beach (NB. there is an entrance fee to the lake & its facilities)

*********************************************

The historic and picturesque villages of Castillonnes, Villereal, and Issigeac all within a 1/2 hour drive, Bergerac, Pujols, Penne D'Agenais and Sarlat in the Dordogne are a little further.
