Chez Wen
About the home
Chez Wen is located in farm country, which provides the peace and tranquillity of a rural setting, but is also just a few kilometres from Monflanquin, a beautiful, 13th century bastide town, that offers lots of shops and restaurants (visit - www.francethisway.com/mbv-monflanquin.php).
Other towns, larger and smaller, are all within a 15-30 minute drive, offering a town market opportunity every day of the week. The closest coast is near Bordeaux - a two-hour drive away. But, who needs the crowds, rented deckchairs and sand in your food, when you can relax around a sparkling pool, just steps away from the food and drink that you enjoy.
You will rejoice in the range of fresh food that has been hand-farmed on small, local properties – sweet, succulent pork; tender, corn-fed chicken; rich, delectable foie-gras; chunky, country pâtés; a cornucopia of seafood, brought-in fresh, daily from Bordeaux; crisp, vibrant vegetables, picked the night before; sweet, seasonal fruit; fresh, warm country breads, and cakes and pastries as only the French can make.
And to wash it all down – an incredible range of wines from the surrounding areas – rich, fruity Malbecs from Cahors; soft, complex Cabernets and delicate, citrus Saivignon-Blancs from Duras and St Emillion; earthy, blended reds from Pécharment, and gentle, sweet dessert wines from Bazillac.

Further details indoors:
This spacious, comfortable home is a large, converted stone farmhouse and barn, built in 1786. “Chez Wen” is at the end of a private road, in the middle of farming country. Set in an acre of grass and garden, the house is located among rolling hills of walnut trees, groves of plum trees (the area is famous for prunes), sunflowers and oak and pine forests surrounded by farmland, providing an enviable combination of tranquility, seclusion and privacy.
The residence has two living areas – La Grande Salle and a separate Family Room.
La Grande Salle is the original barn and is 70m² (700ft²) in area, with a high beamed ceiling and a very comfortable living area with a huge “inglenook” fireplace and a dining area that seats 12. Full-width French doors open out onto the sun-drenched outdoor entertainment area. There is also an outdoor dining area, shaded by a grape-vine covered pergola, looking onto the large pool, sun-deck and surrounding countryside. The kitchen/diner also leads out to the outdoor entertainment area.
The sleeping accommodation comprises two double bedrooms (one with en suite), plus a triple bedroom.
The Family Room can easily be used as a fourth bedroom as it has a double, convertible sofa-bed – offering sleeping accommodation for nine persons, or 10 using the supplied cot. The two bathrooms are large and modern, each with bath, shower and W.C.
For those who need or want electronic contact with the outside world, both living areas are equipped with satellite television, DVD and VCR audio-visual equipment, and telephone and broadband internet access is available. Metre-thick stone walls and tiled floors keep the rooms delightfully cool in mid-summer and, for those who stay at Chez Wen in the colder months, the property is heated by a combination of the huge, open fireplace in La Grande Salle and wood-combustion stoves.
Parents with young children will appreciate that one can see the swimming pool from most rooms in the house, which means that while the kids are out in the hot sun the adults can be inside, where it is cool, and still be able to supervise the activity around the pool.
The huge Living Room has comfortable seating for 10 or more and its own TV/audio/DVD equipment, while the separate Family Room has seating for 6 or more and also has its own TV and DVD equipment. Aside from satellite TV there is also a choice of 72 highly-rated DVD movies for adults and children.
There are two dining areas - casual seating for 8 adjacent to the kitchen, and a separate dining area in La Grande Salle that seats 12.
There is an additional, large fridge/freezer in the laundry, which is very useful if you want to store lots of drinks and food and not have to visit the supermarket so often.
Further details outdoors:
The outbuildings house a modern laundry and a separate W.C. for the convenience of bathers. The pool has a security alarm.
Conditions
Smokers - we welcome considerate smokers and discourage smoking inside the house. Smoking in the bedrooms is prohibited.
Pets - well behaved, obedient, toilet-trained pets are welcome.
Additional Services - we can put together a welcome refreshment pack for you, comprising snacks and wines. A list of choices is made available at the time of booking. Also, we offer an "open bar" of wines and spirits, charged on a consumption basis. Other services available include - airport pick-up and delivery; picnic hampers; cleaning service at the end of your stay. Details are available at the time of booking.
We want to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible and will attempt to satisfy any reasonable request.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

Chez Wen is situated in the "departement" of Lot-et-Garonne , which is named for the two grand rivers that run through the area. The landscape comprises rolling hills and deep valleys that abound with small farms and vineyards, all of which contribute to the well-deserved reputation of the area for being a "foodies paradise".
Historic, Bastide towns are plentiful in this area. The closest to Chez Wen is Monflanquin, just 7 kms away. This beautiful town was founded by England's Black Prince in the 13th century and his home is beautifully preserved and is now an interesting jewellery and artifacts shop with many reasonably-priced and unusual pieces. In addition to the assistance and touring information that Nancye and I can provide, Monflanquin has a very helpful Tourist Information office in the event that you want to venture further afield.
Chez Wen enjoys Spring and early Autumn weather that is dry and pleasantly warm, while summer is also dry, but hotter. The pool is a delightful respite and the swimming season is usually from late April to early October.
The Monflanquin area
For those who want to experience local nightlife, Monflanquin and other towns close-by, offer a range of restaurants and bars, catering to different tastes and budgets.
There are many attractions and activities within a reasonable driving distance from Chez Wen, offering fun and exciting things to do for the active and interesting and beatuiful places to visit for history lovers.
Each of the many surrounding villages offers a market at least once a week, giving you plenty of choice no matter which day you wish to enjoy the hustle and bustle of traditional French markets. Also, all through summer, many of the local towns hold "night markets", which offer local food specialities in the atmosphere of an open-air restaurant. Visitors bring their own cuttlery, crockery and glassware and purchase food and beverages, at very reasonable prices, from the local stall-holders. Family and community seating is provided at long tables, which encourages meeting locals as well as visitors from abroad. Lots of new friendships are forged as a result of spending time at a night market .
Activities available in the area include:- Adventure Park, Badminton, Ballooning, Boating, Boules, Canoeing, Cycling, Fishing, French Tuition, Go Karting, Golf, Gourmet Dining, Horse Riding, Kayaking, Pony Rides, Shopping, Sightseeing, Swimming, Tennis, Walking, Wine Tasting.

A gorgeous French farmhouse with lots of character and space. We had a wonderful week with 2 children under 4, which is not always the easiest thing to do. There are many lovely towns and villages to visit with markets, castles, gardens etc. We would certainly recommend this location to friends as you are totally secluded yet not very far from civilisation e.g local village, supermarket. Would love to return one day. |
Guestbook for Chez Wen
"We have stayed at various houses in France, and Chez Wen was probably the best. We cannot think of anything that needed improvement."
"There was nothing that we needed that wasn't available. You and Nancye have thought of everything, which is great. Good beds, good bathrooms, plenty of seating, and the change of sheets and fresh towels were greatly appreciated."
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and I'm sure many people have told you that you live in a truly wonderful house, in a wonderful setting and a fantastic part of France."
"The house is very well set-up and we really appreciated everything that was there, from the coffee machine to the wine, DVDs, pool toys, comfy beds, etc. I really can't think of much you could do to improve things."
