The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn region

LOCATION,LOCATION,LOCATION
The Midi-Pyrenees is the largest region in France, running from the Pyrenees south of Toulouse, bordering Languedoc-Rousillon to the East, the Limousin & Auvergne to the north and the Poitou-Charente & Aquitaine to the west. The Midi Pyrenees is a mixture of many cultures and is often claimed to be the region with the best life-style. Famous for its innate festive feel, the region enjoys a very sunny climate, perfect for appreciating the constant spectacle of its landscapes. The towering peaks of the Pyrenees Mountains, nature parks, cool mountain rivers and scorching cliffs, the wild Aubrac mountain plateau all threaded through with hundreds of miles of paths, the gorges du Tarn and Averyon, natural forests. Visitors to the Midi-Pyrenees are often surprised by the friendly spontanity they encounter. The region is full of things to see and do during your stay - spend some time in Toulouse basking in the warm glow of its famous red brick buildings or perhaps Albi to meet Toulouse-Lautrec. Discover the delicious local produce (foie gras, cassoulet, Roquefort cheese, wines, visit the medieaval castles or follow the route among fortified towns (Route de Bastides) marked by the events of history and home to typical small markets. You will find picturesque Romanesque and Gothic memories. The region has a variety of interesting cities such as Toulouse, Albi, Cahors, Millau, Mountauban, Carcasonne, Espaillon.

Laparrouquial, 10km North East Cordes-sur-Ciel, is part of the Department du Tarn with Albi as capital city. Various rivers - the most important being the Tarn, the Avyeron and the Viaur meander through this Department. The natural landscape includes the gorges du Tarn and Aveyron, large areas of unspoilt natural (oak) forest, roling countryside with vineyards, sunflower, lupine and grain field, mountainous areas and plateau's with their typical vegetation (causse). An afternoon trip by canoe through one of the the famous gorges with their magnificent rough landscape with steep walls and leanover rocks is considered a "must" by nearly all guests. Whatever the time of the year you will be well placed at Le Peyrecout is set in a perfect position for exploring the Tarn, Aveyron, Tarn & Garonne and further a field within the Midi-Pyrenees. It is certainly possible to visit the Pyrenees, the walled city of Carcassonne and even the Mediterranean for a day out.

THE HISTORY AND CULTURE ENTHUSIAST
We are close to the bastide towns unique to the South West of France, built to redevelop the region after the ravages of the 100 years war, Cordes-sur-Ciel one of the most beautiful is just 10 kms away, and has a variety of restaurants and artisan shops, others including Puycelsi over looking the forest of Gresigne and Penne with its ruined castle perched precariously above the Aveyron Valley are only a short drive away. Set below the cliffs of the Aveyron Gorges is the lovely town of St Antonin Noble Val where the film "Charlotte Grey" was filmed.

Our local village, 5mins away, is Laguepie nestled at the junction of the rivers Viaur and Aveyron in the Tarn & Garonne.Laguepie is a lively market town with its famous for its chestnut festival and medival castle bordering Tarn and Aveyrone.

To the south, 10mins away, is Monestiers which has been nominated as one of the most beautiful villages in France and houses a stunning collection of 15th Century statues.

The historic city of Albi, with its famous fortress cathedral, the largest brick built building in the world, is an enjoyable day out and you can also visit the Toulouse Lautrec museum, which houses the largest collection of the artist's work in the beautiful Bishops Palace. If you are staying over July 14th weekend there is always a fabulous firework display above the river.

There are Roman remains throughout the region with a particularly good display of artefacts in Montans. In Castres there is the Goya museum, and Toulouse, the "rose city" has a variety of historic buildings, museums and galleries. Toulouse is also home to Space City and provides a good day out for all the family.

CLIMATE
It's southerly location, it is on a parallel with the Mediterranean coast, means a warm spring, long hot summers, and glorious autumns with lovely days often lasting well into November. We even get a sprinkling of snow sometimes during the winter

Monesties area

THE ENERGETIC
There are a variety of activities within a few miles of La Peyrecout including quad biking, canoeing, sailing, horse riding and cycling.

We are less than 15kms from a new outdoor leisure centre called the Cap Decouverte which has dry slope skiing, water skiing, montain biking, swimming, skateboarding, go karting… The list goes on! www.capdecouverte.com

Hiking / flora, bird and wild life watching - We are in wonderful walking country and whatever your level you will find walks to suit your needs. There is huge scope, from challenging gorge walking through to relaxing strolls through forests and along river valleys. There are over 50 well-marked routes in the Tarn alone and as we are so close to the Aveyron departement we can double that number of easily accessible routes. The summer temperatures can make walking in late July and August uncomfortable but both Spring and Autumn provide wonderful walking weather.

Equestrians venturing here are spoilt for choice around La Peyrecout. The areas bridle paths take visitors across a wide variety of terrain. Many of the public GR and GRP footpaths are open to horse-riders and the less-steep hill routes are of particular interest. And you don't have to be an expert rider to take advantage of this compelling landscape to explore on horseback.

Swimming/sailing Near Monestiés (10 min) there is lake with sand beach (la Roucarie) where one can swim and sail. Of course there are many places along the rivers Aveyron and the Viaur were one can plunge in the water to cool down.

Canoeing / rafting - Experience Frances natural wonders first hand through exhilarating canoeing trips of the gorges du Averyron. Starting point at any of the renting companies at St. Antonin Noble Val. A 3-4 hour adventure along the magnificent cliffs of the Roc d' Anglars. The trip -through rapids and over dams- is not difficult and children can join. Take food and drinks for a stop-over on the banks of the river and jump from a 20 ft cliff into the water.

For the really adventurous, try the wild water rafting in the Gorges du Tarn north-east of Millau. The gorges and surrouding plateau's provide a breathtaking scenery. With outdoor pursuit centres and an abundance of professional instructors, catering for the novices through the experienced paddles. For those who admire man's ability to build structures, view- at Millau- the just completed highest bridge in the world with central columns that are higher than the Eiffel tower. Make it a day trip and leave early. The drive to the gorges du Tarn is 2-3 hours.

Fishing - Fishing can be done in any of the nearby rivers and streams. In the neighbourhood there are also a couple of commercial fish ponds.

Cycling / Mountain Biking - There are a many marked VTT (mountain bike) trails from Laguepie and for those who are more interested in touring you can try one of the many marked routes in the Tarn

Climing (tree and rock) - On a plateau near St. Antonin Noble Val (D958 to Carême), professionals teach you to clime and glide along cables from tree to tree at a height of 20 to 30 ft. It's real fun for children (>8 years) and adults alike. Rock climing is also available under profesionnal guidance.

Golf - There are several excellent golf courses in the area including a champonship course, which are in beautiful settings with stunning views over the Tarn. They are uncrowded with very reasonable green fees. Contact us if you would liek to know more about our golf packages.

THE GOURMET AND SOMMELIER
As you might hope, we are served by a wide range of local restaurants. These pride themselves in serving fresh, local produce in friendly surroundings, you will find regional and national specialities including cassoulet, duck in every form including foie gras, fish and sea food. Lunch is still particularly good value with 3 course menus often including wine starting from as little as 13 euros a head.

We are in the middle of the Gaillac wine area (www.vins-gaillac.com) and you will be able to stop at different vineyards and Domaines and sample different wines every day of the week. There are a variety of soft fruity reds and light rosés ideal for summer lunch times. Their sparkling and crisp "perle" whites are good as aperitifs and with seafood, and the lovely sweet dessert wine rounds off a meal perfectly but also compliments foie gras particularly well.

There are a variety of food and wine festivals in the region throughout the summer including the wine festival in Gaillac held during August each year and "Gaillac premier" festival in November.

MARKETS
If you want to cater for yourself there are markets most days of the week only a short distance from us, where you can browse and choose fresh local produce.

- Cordes has a market on Saturday morning with a wide assortment of regionally produced foods (cheese, honey, fruit and vegetables, foie gras, meat, bread, mushrooms, herbes, truffels) and drinks (wine, eau-de-vie), clothing and craft.
- St. Antonin Noble Val has a market on Sunday morning, held under the 18 century covered market-hall.

Guestbook

"The place has an authentic feel, with old rustic charm so the comfortable interiors contrast nicely. We stayed in the smallest gîte and the facilities compared very favourably with our next destination in Brittany. David and Nathalie provided the extras that make a difference like a dishwasher, tea towels, two sets of bath towels, even a bottle of wine, satellite tv and hi fi. None of this was found at our next g?e which was similarly priced. The kitchen was easily good enough to do some quite serious cooking at home which we enjoy. They personalised the holiday without being intrusive and we thought the welcome dinner a good idea and appreciated being taken rather than having to find the vineyard for degustation. The wine is now one of our favourites. There were no biting insect problems common to farm locations and the pool set the whole experience off nicely. We also loved the area especially the medieval villages and actually began house hunting. This is advanced g?e !holidaying and first class value - we spent half the weekly rental again on one night and a gourmet dinner at a posh hotel in Boulogne! "
