Gite | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Les Hirondelles is part of a traditional white stone building in the beautiful Tarn, close to the historic town of Monesties. The gite, which is situated on the first and second floors of the building, is attached to, but entirely independent of, the main house, where the British owners live. It has its own access stairway and large first floor terrace with a panoramic view. It has been sympathetically renovated giving a modern living space whilst retaining traditional features such as some interior stone walls.
Les Hirondelles, named for the swallows who nest around us and keep us entertained with their acrobatics, is situated in a quiet hamlet, in deep farming country. You may hear a tractor going by but other than that the main sounds you will hear will be birdsong and the local cows. The whole property has stunning 180 degree views to the Black Mountains 40 miles (64km) away - on a clear day the Pyrenees are visible more than 100 miles (160km) away. The property has a large, 12 metre by 6 metre unheated swimming pool equipped with loungers and parasols to laze away long sunny days.

The Midi-Pyrenees region
The Tarn is a still largely undiscovered region for tourists and consequently is rarely crowded. Its climate is one of warm spring days, long hot summers and glorious autumn days with the warm weather often lasting through October. It is a region of varied landscapes with lush green valleys and rolling hills as well as spectacular gorges along the edges of the many rivers in the department.
Our local village of Monesties is a small traditional, village, classified as one of the most beautiful in France. There are various events and activities in Monesties and the surrounding villages throughout the year and visitors are welcome to join in with locals in enjoying these events.
There are tennis courts available for hire in the village centre. Several villages such as Laguepie and St Antonin Noble Val (both within 30 minutes drive) offer opportunities for canoeing and Kayaking as well as other activities such as high ropes.
Monesties is famous for its Mise en Tombeau at the Chapel St Jacques. This is a considered one of the area's greatest medieval treasures, consisting of a sculptural group depicting the lamentation over the dead Christ.
Cap Decouverte, about 15 minutes away, also offers many other activities for the more adventurous such as artificial slope skiing and snowboarding and a giant zip wire.
Albi is just a 30 minute drive away and is a stunning city that has Unesco World Heritage status. The imposing cathedral is a dominant landmark, and right next to it is the newly refurbished Toulouse-Lautrec museum. The old streets surrounding this area are attractive, and also provide shade. There are some beautiful views over the impressive Tarn river. The annual music festival in Albi in July is a hugely popular event with many free concerts taking place over three days. The city is totally given over to the festival with a wonderful relaxed atmosphere in the bars and restaurants as well as at the concerts. The fireworks on Bastille Day (14th July) are spectacular.
There are many beautiful bastide towns around to visit, including Cordes sur Ciel, St. Antonin Noble Val and Najac as well as local markets to explore and bring home regional produce to sample. The nearby Gaillac region is also a wine producing area, with many local vineyards to explore and sample the regional wines.
