The Peloponnese region

The three-pronged ‘island of Pelops’, the mythical chariot-racing king, was not in fact an island until the 1890’s, when the narrow isthmus at Corinth was finally severed by a shipping canal. Many people still consider it part of the mainland. But it is culturally and scenically very distinct – and very rich.

It boasts the largest and most spectacular concentration of ancient sites, including royal Mycenae, therapeutic Epidavros and athletic Olympia, where the Olympic games were founded. Less known but equally fascinating are the many Byzantine (medieval) cities, churches and fortresses, including the hilltown of Mystras and the sea-rock of Monemvasia. The rugged Mani peninsula, central of the three ‘fingers’, positively bristles with towers and frescoed chapels. Or, if you fancy something more civilised, check out the elegant seaside town of Nafplion, with its narrow alleys, tiled houses, castles and festivals.

Those who prefer natural wonders to man-made will not be disappointed. The southerly mountain range of Taygetus offers breathtaking gorges, spring flowers, jagged 8000-foot peaks and well-maintained mulepaths to link them. Some of Greece’s finest beaches can be found on the westren finger around Pilos, or along the endless pine-shaded strand that forms the west coast. The northerly ranges around Kalavrita conceal historic monasteries, fir forests, lakes and an unbelievable rack-and-pinion railway route. This is the ancient Greeks’ arcadia, and you can see why.

If someone is looking to visit just one part of Greece with a bit of everything, Peloponnese is certainly the place, with Monemvasia being the most precious jewel of it.

Monemvasia / Xifias area

Nea Monemvasia, at the other end of the passage to the rock of Monemvasia, is one of the most developed areas in Laconia. There are many modem hotels and other good-quality accommodation, restaurants and picturesque tavernas, shopping possibilities meeting all requirements and opportunities for every manner of recreation that a visitor might desire. Every possible recreation in connection with the sea is available, at the beach of Monemvasia itself and further afield. Just in front of the village lies the small harbour of Mandraki, with a pebble-stone beach. To the north lies the beach of Pera Kakavos and at a distance of 6 kim. that of Pori. More beaches and hospitable coves can be found south of Monemvasia at the villages of Agia Paraskevi, Nomia, Agios Stefanos and the long beach of Xifias, 4 km from the town. Inland, at an attitude of 340 m., you can visit Foutia with its lovely view, and further south, still on the eastern coast, Agios Fokas with its small bays. Mani stretches from Gythio to Cape Tainaro the mythical entrance to the underworld. It is a wild landscape and maybe nowhere in Greece does a region seem so close to its medieval past. In Mani are 98 out of the 118 traditional settlements existing in Peloponnese. It is an ideal place to visir all year round. There are plenty beaches with fine sand and pebbles for the summer. The tower houses (the characteristic of Mani), the Byzantine monuments and the churches are worth a visit. In Mani there are also some of the most important caves in Greece. Local olive oil and honey are of excellent quality. Towns and villages to visit, Gythio, Areopolis, Oitilo, Diros, Limeni, Gerolimenas, Vathia, Lagia, Kokkala, Halikia, Kotronas. It is a distinct place with ledgends and traditions, nothing similar all over the world. You will respect it, you will love it. Driving south from Areopoli, it is 8 Km to the village of Pirgos Dirou, where the road forks off to the underground caves (second and third picture). The caves are 4Km further on from the main village, set beside the sea and a small beach (first picture). Glifada Caves are well-lit and crammed with stalactites where reflections are remarkable. Alepotrypa Caves are huge chambers in which excavations have unearthed evidence of prehistoric occupation. The caves are among the most important natural sites in Greece and with great archaeological significance. Cave details Glifada: Its temperature ranges from 16°C to 20°C. The water temperature is around 12°C. Passages of about 5000m have been explored while its total extent is 33,400sq.m. The existence of the cave has been known since 1900, and in 1949 it was explored by I. Petrochilos. It is regarded as one of the most beauti- ful lake caves in the world. In its interior fossil animals have been discovered that existed 2 million years ago. Alepotripa: It is situated 200m east of Glyphada and was discov- ered in 1958. It was explored by Mr. and Mrs. Petrochilos. The finds provide evidence of life in the cave 6,000 years ago many of which are exhibited in the "Stone Age Museum" of Diros situated at the entrance of the cave. The extent of the cave is 6,500sq.m., 600sq.m. of which consist of land and the rest is covered by the water of an under- ground river. The average tempera- ture of the cave is 19°C and of the water 18°C. Kataphigi: It is located 500m. on the left side of the road that leads to the former two caves. It has an area of 2,700sq.m. whereas the length of its passages is 700m.

Guestbook

"Excellent place to spend your holidays! My kids loved the swimming pool and everything was at a short distance from the property. There is even a convenient store, which is handy for everyday needs. We loved it!
