The Peloponnese region

At the far end of Peloponnese, on the southern east coast of the peninsula looking on to Mirtoon Sea, at a distance of 95 km form the town of Sparta stands Monemvasia. A distinctly shaped great rock - "capsized ship" according to Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos - rising from the sea, only a few meters from the coast is often referred as the "Gibraltar of Greece".A thin strip of land links it with the Gefyra, a fishing village on the main land. It takes 15 to 20 minutes walking from Gefyra to Monemvasia. There are several churches around like Panagia Chrisafitissa, Panagia Mirtidiotissa, Chistos Elkomenos, Agia Sofia.
The Monemvasia / Monemvasia Old town area
Goulas is in the old town of Monemvasia. There are many historical sites to visit.
The Fort city of Monemvasia with the one and only gate as its name suggests (Moni=sole, Emvasia=entrance) turns a dream into reality.
In subsequent years, they faced frequent raids. Normans tried unsuccessfully to seize Monemvasia in 1147. In 1249 William Villehardouin conquered it after a three-year siege. In 1460 it came under the authority of the Pope, while Venetians followed up to 1550. Turks seized it in 1715 and it was liberated in 1823. The church of Agia Sofia overlooks the region at the bleakest part of the rock and is one of the most beautiful worship spots in Greece.
From Monemvasia the visitors have the possibility to make daily trips to nearby place such as the village and the port of Gerakas which is like a little frjod, the Monastere of Evagelistrias, the village of Kiparissi, the caves of Diros and Ano Kastania, the island of Elafonisos, the city of Mystras e.t.c.

Guestbook for Goulas traditional guesthouse

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Momemvasia! We were supposed to have Room #5 and use of the yard, but were given Room #4 because it was available. Room #4 is larger, has views from both bedrooms, and has a fantastic view of the sea from the terrace, We still used the kitchen facilities, and we thoroughly enjoyed eating our meals on the terrace!" from Dehmlow Susan

We stayed in room 3 with huge a terrace. Although the room was small, the terrace made the whole stay unbelievable. We loved the location. it is just down from the main street which means that you do not have to climb with your suitcases. I think they have bigger rooms there with terraces as well and i would highly recommend that. it is good to tell them the time of arrival as the door are close sometimes! we loved our stay there

Sweet little room with balcony facing south over the Mirtoon Sea!...one on many rooms the Goulas has on offer scattered around the main office a minutes walk from the main access into Monemvasia. Nice touches abounded such as towels coiled into hearts onto our bed! Lovely little kitchen and all decorated in dark wood with a lovely Greek feeling. The weather was cool so we were glad of the warming air-con system!
We were out of season of course, staying a night as a birthday treat away from our holiday home in the Mani, so Monemvasia was very quiet with little open but this was fine....it made it a lot easier to negotiate the tiny passages and climb to the old citadel above! We could imagine that this destination would be packed in summer! By the way, you can park a car by the main entrance to Monemvasia out of season....and the little seaside town of Gyfira on the mainland is charming with a decent bank too. Highly recommended...well done Toula!

My stay here may very well have been the best 2 days of my life. It is clean, cheap and simply amazing. If I were the owner I would charge far more. Really, If you don't stay here and you stay in the new town, I think you are making a huge mistake. I WILL be back!

We spent two wonderful nights in a suite at this hotel. Every window in our room had a beautiful view of the ocean, gorgeous flowers blooming, and an awesome huge lemon tree filled with lemons. We had a large balcony where we could sit, and enjoy the clean fresh air, and of course the beautiful ocean. The room had AC, t.v., refrigerator, coffee pot, and a hot plate. The lady working the front desk was very charming and helpful! We loved our stay in the castle!
