Monda discovered by the Romans with its "Ley Lines" has it's own Castle, steeped in history dating back to the Moors from 10th century, rebuilt and is now a 30 bedroom hotel. The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
Interesting places to visit from Monda are El Chorro and the Lakes, Antequera, Ronda with the oldest bullring in Spain and El Tajo across the gorge. Cordoba with its Mosque, Sevilla with its famous cathedral and La Giralda the golden tower and Granada with the famous Alhambra Palace and splendid Generalife Gardens.
A short drive from Monda is Istan with its Lake Concepcion which is now a reservoir supplying the coast with its water supply. Marbella with its old town and Plaza de los Naranjos - Orange Square, full of wonderful restaurants and shops and Puerto Banus with its amazing yachts and night-life.
Monda area
The castle of Monda which is now a hotel dates back to the 10th Century and Julius Caesar once dined there. The Spanish love their fiestas and Monda is no exception with Dia de Andalucia 28 February where they prepare soup for the whole village. New Year's Eve - Noche Viejo everyone takes their champagne into the square and as the clock chimes 12 times to let the New year in everyone has to eat their 12 grapes and make a wish.
In August is the Feria and all the children and ladies dress up in their flamenco dresses and during the day dance in the square then in the evenings there is a stage and a band plays non stop all night. In May there is a Romeria in the next village of Guaro and in June the Romeria in Coin where you can see all the Spanish horses and horsemen in traditional dress.
How to get there
From Malaga airport, turn right, follow main roads A7 or E15 to Algeciras. When on outskirts of Marbella take the turning towards Ojen A355 and stay on this road to Monda 17km, do not go into Ojen. Take the first turning into Monda and follow the signs for the Castle (El Castillo in Spanish) and The Marbella Gun and Country Club, As you enter Monda village there is a Farmacia (Chemist) on your right then you will see a sign pointing left for the next village called Guaro. Turn left taking this road, driving out of Monda down a hill with a very sharp right hand bend at the bottom.
On the bend is a sign left for Hotel El Castillo but drive round the bend for approx 100 metres and on the left hand side you will see a left turn and a sign for the "The Marbella Gun and Country Club" also underneath a sign for Andalucian Horseriding Adventure. Turn left up this steep concrete road, and stay on it for about 500 metres - it will level out and then you will see another sign for Andalucian Horseriding Adventure on the right. Turn right here and its first gate on the left. Time from the airport will take approximately 45 mins to 1 hour depending on the traffic.
If you know the area you can also drive from Malaga Airport towards, Cartama, then Coin and then Monda. Takes about the same travelling time.
Easijet and Bimibabyoffer cheap flights from most destinations into Malaga and Crown Car Hire or Malaga Cars offer competitive car hire rates.
