The Algarve region
The Algarve amidst its hills and plains is filled with places of great ecological interest, rich in biodiversity and ecosystems, you will feel as though you are passing through an area full of different traditions.
You will find secluded coves with beaches and amazing cliffs plus vast stretches of golden sand.
Only a short distance from the tranquil peace of the inland region is the excitement of the Algarve coastal nightlife, bars, discos, marinas and casinos guarantee visitors the very best of entertainment.
Also to be recommended is the wide range of outdoor sports that are available, whether you're playing golf on one of the wonderful courses, enjoying some other sporting activity at one of the region's many excellent facilities or just walking and taking in the fantastic scenery .
After the winter and even before the first real signs of spring, the land is covered in a pinkish white blanket, produced by the blossom of the almond-trees scattered across the horizon, a sight you will never forget.
The Serra de Monchique is still the old Algarve, touched but not spoilt by modernity and tourism.
The peace and quiet of the lush green environment, the airy spaciousness coupled with fantastic panaromic views, friendly people, living a simple slow paced life.
The elevation of Monchique offers spectacular views along the Algarve coastline and the area is totally different from the coastal Algarve.
The houses in Monchique are typically inland Algarvean with their white walls and bands of colour around the windows and doors, but their 'saia' (skirt) chimneys are quite unique and different from coastal houses.
The area is a handicrafts and arts centre, artisans can be seen producing knitwear, cane work, pottery, tiles and sculptures. Several cobblers still make shoes by hand, and local people still produce such homemade products as honey, marmalade and jam, plus the local black pork sausages, you must try the local firewater called Medronho, a potent spirit made from the local Medronho berrys.
The village of Caldas de Monchique on the road up to the town of Monchique is where the Romans built baths to utilise the natural mineral spring waters flowing down from the mountain, the mineral waters are still in use in the 'thermal treatment centre' for treating rheumatism and respiratory illnesses. This small village is set deep in a valley with towering trees, some of them hundreds of years old and the buildings are very different from traditional Algarvean houses, there are numerous cafes and bars around the village to stop and have a refreshing drink.
A Serra de Monchique holiday offers total relation, with pure mountain air, spectacular scenery, plenty of places to walk and explore and lots of bars, cafes and restaurants to enjoy a drink or a meal. If you want to spend a day at the beach, it's only about a thirty minutes drive to the South coast and just forty-five minutes to the undeveloped and very rugged West coast, a haven for surfers and windsurfers.
