It really has the best of both worlds quiet location in the woods, only 5 minutes drive from town center.

About this location
The Algarve region
Monchique is known as the garden of Algarve. There are many different things to do in Monchique and it is so different from the coastal Algarve. Monchique is a lovely town to explore with lots of narrow, cobbled streets criss-crossing the hillside and shops and cafés dotted around. There are shops selling ceramics and craft work and when you want a break - pastelarias with a wonderful selection of freshly made cakes and pastries (often using the local honey) and restaurants serve home made food. The municipal pools are wonderful with outdoor and indoor pools.
Monchique is also a very popular area for mountain biking and long walks. Follow the signs in town and visit the ruins of the convent which overlooks Monchique- the walk up the hill is worth it for the views. Drive up to Foia, the highest point in the Algarve (and the coldest!), there are some restaurants along the route with (once again) fabulous views of the Monchique hills. Don't forget to visit Caldas de Monchique with it's thermal spa and wonderful, peaceful, gardens.
The highest point in the Algarve. It is 902 metres high and the view is fantastic - you can see from Cape St. Vincent in the west, to Faro in the east and to the Serra da Arrabida, near Lisbon, to the north! You also get an up-close view of the wind turbines! A word of caution - go prepared with something warm to put on! On the day we went it was 19°C in Portimão and just 9°C when we reached Foia.
Monchique is one of the most charming places on the Algarve and it's very different from the tourist coast. It sits atop the high Serra de Monchique range of hills that deflect cool winds and endow the Algarve with it's stable climate.
With dazzling views and a mild climate, Monchique's air is fresh and many activities take place on the unaltered hills: guided walks, horse riding, flower and bird's watchers, mountain biking, Yoga, meditation, aromatherapy and crystaltherapy.
And remember that in just half-an-hour you can explore the Algarve coast, Aljezur in costa Vicentina, in two hours you can be in Spain, and in three hours you can be in Lisbon.
