The Kenyan Coast is one of Africa’s major tourist destinations, with undoubtedly some of the best sandy, white beaches in the world. The warm and safe Indian Ocean, with its protective reef has become popular for its exotic beaches, diverse marine life and friendly people who cater to all types of tourists: those looking for a quiet swim, a place for kids to play, deep-sea fishing, and water sports activities such as surfing, scuba diving and sailing. When coupled with its large selection of beachfront hotels, Mombasa becomes an ideal place for a vacation.
In addition to its beautiful beaches, the Coast offers a diverse cultural history, tracing many of its cultural traditions to former Portuguese, Arab and British settlers – all of which have left a lasting influence on the region's food, architecture, and people. Tours of the towns, safaris in game parks, and camping trips can all be included in your vacation plan.
The Mombasa / Nyali area
We are located in Nyali, considered a prime and up-market residential area, on the mainland north of the island and linked by the New Nyali Bridge. There are numerous beach front hotels in the area known as the "North Coast". Nyali has now become a self-contained residential area, with two Nakumatts (supermarkets), a multiplex cinema, shopping malls, banks, schools and post offices. Nyali is home for the Nyali Cinemax complex, Mamba Village, the Nyali Golf Club and Planet Bamburi, Nakumatt Nyali / City Mall and Nyali Centre shopping complexes. Other notable features in the area are Mamba Village crocodile farm, Wild Waters amusement park and Haller Park, a nature trail and wildlife conservatory.

“Fine...”
We stayed here for a month while working on a project and in many ways, it was great. But for four weeks it's hard to ignore the "not so little things": 1) Electricity/ AC--was both unreliable and extremely expensive; 2) AC barely cools the apartment; 3) The apartment looks out onto a grocery store with a very loud generator--nothing scenic or relaxing about this; 4) Kitchen is poorly equipped; 5) Internet is not so reliable; 6) It's in the middle of an ever-expanding shopping mall complex--with clubs, bars, cafes, coffee shops, and a range of shady things in between. If you want to feel like you're somewhere between Las Vegas, Miami Beach, and Rome--this might be just the place for you. If you're looking for somewhere a little more, well, reminiscent of the rest of the Coast or the rest of Kenya, this is hardly a representative sample.
Perks: Very nice loft layout--rare for Kenya. Staff/ management are very friendly. Convenient for groceries, etc.
In sum: if you're looking for a beach vacation--why would you stay in a parking lot? If you're in Mombasa on work or long-term and can't afford the beach-front, this is a nice option.
Response: Thank you for your candid review - we are always keen to listen to our guests and endeavour to provide the best service we can to ensure a comfortable and trouble-free stay. We enjoyed hosting you and would have appreciated feedback while you were staying with us as we would have taken steps to try and make your stay more pleasant. Allow us to respond to the "not so little things" that appear to have irked you:
1) Electricity: as you were staying with us for a month, we provided you with a special rate with a heavy discount off our advertised rates with electricity charged separately. The total amount you paid including electricity was still very much cheaper than what we would have normally charged and we don't normally charge for electricity separately in our advertised rates. Electricity is a very expensive commodity in Kenya and we charged you average rates that we pay to the power company. Unfortunately it is also unreliable in Kenya, although the power cuts seemed to have peaked during the month of your stay with us and indeed we have not had any power cuts since December 2012. We have taken further steps to address this issue with plans for installation of a back up power generator in the early part of 2013. 2) You visited us during one of the hottest months of the year, and Mombasa can get unbearably hot for the unacclimatised. The apartment is very large and spacious, so the A/C may take a little while to cool the apartment, but we also have ceiling fans installed both upstairs and downstairs and are happy to provide extra pedestal fans on request. Also, leaving the balcony sliding doors and windows open while the A/C is on will have an adverse effect on cooling the apartment. The A/Cs were changed in 2012 and are regularly serviced. 3) Due to the power cuts, that seemed to have peaked during your stay with us, our neighbours used their back-up generators which can be quite noisy. We will install our own generator as well as the neighbouring noisy generator in a sound-proofed room that will dampen the noise emitted for the comfort of our guests. As for the "grocery store" (actually the largest mall on the Kenyan Coast), most of our guests find the fact that it is next door very convenient. We don't advertise "scenic views" as a feature of our establishment, yet we are minutes from the beach and also overlook Haller Park Nature Trail which does actually provide scenic forest views. 4) The kitchens are equipped with a fridge-freezer, gas cooker, kettle, toaster, iron, pots and pans, crockery, utensils and cutlery. We are happy to provide extra items on request, but we did not receive any requests from you during your stay with us. We regularly update and change the kitchen equipment. 5) Internet: we offer free wireless connectivity to all our guests in their apartments. Unfortunately, there were nation-wide problems with connectivity during the month of your stay with us and indeed internet services in the whole of Mombasa were affected for a few days due to the severing of undersea cables that provide internet to Kenya. 6) Our building was the first in our area, almost twenty years ago. The pace of development in Mombasa is indeed frantic, and there are many new developments in the area. Although many yearn for the good old days with less development, traffic and infrastucture, we feel that most of the new developments are welcome. As for the "shady things in between", in a developing country like Kenya, there are always a range of services provided to suit many tastes and pockets and the authorities are active in stamping out any undesirable activity. We ensure that our guests are secure in our apartment building and we assure you there are no "shady things" going on within our premises. As for describing our environs as a cross between Las Vegas, Miami and Rome, we are sure that although these places have their own charms and fallacies, Mombasa is a very welcoming, clean, green, beautiful and most importantly unique location, so it would be unfair to categorize us within such a narrow definition.
We are not a beach front location, and this is reflected in our rates. Beach front holidays in Mombasa cost substantially more than we charge and indeed, why would you want to stay in an apartment building not on the beach if you can afford to stay in a beach front location? We do think it is unfair to describe our establishment as a "parking lot" and we surely offer much more than just free parking...
We have taken your comments on board and will strive to improve wherever possible, and we are sure to offer you a more pleasant experience should you wish to stay with us in the future.

“Good location and good value for money”

I knew about the Planet because I had stayed there many years ago as a long term tennant. It was good then but even much better now. This time round we stayed for a week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The owners, Puneesh & Kunj are extremely helpful and efficiently organized our stay. They even offered to organize an airport pickup in a private car for us. Nice touch. They also offered to book us a safari and numerous excursions. They were always available for advice and assisted us with any questions that we had. Just talk to them and they will ensure you have a good stay.
The appartments are excellent. For the prices that they charge, the appartments are very well worth it. I looked all around the North Coast for similar deals but nothing came close to the quality that the Planet offered. The appartments are really nice. Well decorated in an African chic style, fully serviced and contain a fully equipped kitchen, living room, dining area, balcony and bedroom en suite.
The bed mattresses were perfect for us. Firm enough for my bad back yet soft enough for my partner. I often have mattress problems when I travel but these were perfect.
The airconditioners are powerful and kept my appartment cool throughout our stay. The bathrooms were large and spacious, hot water was always available and the water pressure in the shower was fantastic. After a miserable shower at a nearby hotel where I stayed the first week, this came as a welcome relief.
Another excellent aspect of the Planet is the location. They are a short walk away from the beach yet are centrally located surrounded by many restaurants, hotels and bars. However, have no fear, once you're in the appartment, you hear no loud noises and can enjoy a quiet time. A 1 minute walk away is a large supermarket where you can stock up on all that you need.
All in all, the Planet appartments are excellent. If you're looking for a place of quality to spend your time on the North Coast of Mombasa close to the beaches and attractions, nothing comes close to the Planet. I will always stay here ...

“Very comfortable rooms, great service and perfectly located, a winner!”
The apartments are located very close to the beach. The are very spacious, clean and with some great African culture paintings making a splendid decor. A shopping mall is less than a minute's walk away. Bob's bar which is one of the coolest in all of Africa is close by also. The owners are always around meaning you get a fantastic service - not just ensuring your stay is comfortable, they go a step extra and help to book trips to see other parts of Kenya including safaris at discounted prices! I highly recommend staying here and will definitely return soon.

“Perfect, Convenient, Centrally located and Spacious Apartments”
Apartment is centrally located with easy access to all the beaches and to all the basic amenities minute walk from apartments. Apartment is well maintained, spacious, clean and secure. Me and my partner we were completely satisfied and for the amount we paid you can't ask for anything better. Whenever i go next i will definitely stay at the same place. Apartment owners are very friendly and helpful and helped us organize our safari trip and all the sight seeing which saved us tons of money and hassle. Don't forget to visit the Italian restaurant next to the apartments.
