The Lombardy region
Lake Como is the most romantic and scenic lake to the south of the Alps. The lake is very popular not only for it's beauty and temperate climate but also for it's relaxed approach to life. For this reason many celebrities, including film stars (George Clooney) and designers, have fallen in love with the area and have villas here where they can escape to.
Moltrasio is situated within the first basin of Lake Como making it only 50 minutes drive from Malpensa airport and an ideal base for many day trips:
- Take a boat trip and visit the picturesque villages of Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna with their villas, gardens and beautiful scenery;
- Enjoy the historical city of Como (10 mins) with it’s elegant boutiques and lake-front bars and restaurants. There is also an open street market 3 times a week and the most amazing indoor fresh fruit and vegetable market.
- Visit Milan (1 hr) with its designer shops, museums and historical monuments and walk on the roof of the Duomo (cathedral) to see it all from above.
- Go across the border to Switzerland (10mins) to get some great deals at the Fox Town designer outlet (30mins), visit nearby Lake Lugano and the chocolate factory is great for children.
There are many invigorating scenic mountain walks as well as easy-going strolls but if you just want to sit back and relax by the lake there are several lidos and shingle beaches nearby.
During the summer there are various open-air concerts in Como and Cernobbio as well as lake-side village festivals where it is possible to enjoy typical local food and traditions.
Moltrasio is a characteristic and tranquil little village on the western shore of Lake Como. It has some very exclusive villas owned by wealthy industrialists and designers but at the same time has retained a quiet and friendly community.
The natural surroundings are splendid and there are various walks leading directly from the house that enjoy breath-taking lake views. The famous Italian composer, Vincenzo Bellini, was so inspired by the waterfall that cascades down the centre of the village, that he wrote an opera - 'La Sonnambola'.
The village has several shops including various mini-markets (fresh bread and pasta) and a salumeria (fresh local meats and traditional hams), a chemist, news agent and post office and quiet a few steps if you decide to walk!! There is a big supermarket and shopping mall in nearby Cernobbio (10min).
There are many excellent cafes, bars, restaurants and pizzerias both in Moltrasio and in nearby Cernobbio that cater for all tastes and budgets.

"Wonderful house with a view"
We were looking for a small, but comfortable villa close to the southern part of Lake Como capable of hosting a couple and a small baby. That's exactly what we found with this beautifully restored Rustico in the heart of Tosnacco. The house is up on the hills of the village of Moltrasio, near Como, Cernobbio, Menaggio and Bellagio. For us a perfect location, since it was a wonderful starting point for daytrips to all interesting tourist sites around the lake. The villa is somewhat small for more than 3 people, but with a spacious bedroom and a bathroom upstairs as well as a living room area with open kitchen downstairs it provided enough room for us. Though it is located in the middle of a residential area above the village piazza, it was a very quiet surrounding and all of the neighbors were very nice. It felt a little bit like living in the heart of Italy. The most overwhelming thing was the wonderful view of the lake and the village of Torno (on the opposite lakeshore) from all of the windows as well as from the little terrace in the back of the house. Good enough for an unforgettable breakfast (or dinner...) experience. On the piazza close to the house there is an amazing trattoria, which we can highly recommend. Don't leave that one out!
Overall we would recommend the villa for a couple (maybe with kids...) who seeks for a comfortable but not too luxurious small house in a calm area near the lake. We'd suggest to take the car, however we also did several trips by feet, since the ferry station is only a 20 minutes walk away. But be advised: it's not only a few hundred meters in distance, but also a difference of 150 meters in hight compared to the lakeside level. So be prepared to climb up and down quite a few steps to catch a boat. Anyhow, we even liked this stroll through the traditional houses of Moltrasio.
We certainly will consider to go there once again...

We had the most perfect stay in this lovely apartment overlooking lake Como. The apartment was modern and clean and lacked nothing. Lovely evenings sat out on the veranda. The apartment is well located and although is set high up with lots of steps to the top....it is well worth the climb back every evening. Would absolutely recommend. Home from home.

"Lovely apartment with great views"
Lovely little apartment ideal for what we required for a week staying on Como. Great views of the Lake (would be lovely in the summer sitting having a glass of wine on the table outside but it was a bit cold being October!)
From the apartment you can walk down the steps to the lake (quite a few but a nice little walk) where you can get the boat to other towns on the Lake.
Just next to the apartment is a small shop and an excellent restaurant where the people were so friendly especially with our little 2yr old. Infact all the locals would speak when you passed them on the steps, it was nice as it wasn't touristy or maybe it is more in the summer?
Moltrasio isn't far from Como town itself so we could easily drive there, and to Cernobbio to get icecream and watch the world go by.

"Beautiful house and splendid views located in a traditional lake side village community"
We stayed at this little gem of a house for the first week of our honeymoon in June. The house is very well equipped and nicely decorated. The views from the balcony and bedroom windows are simply stunning. The house is in a small community called Tosnacco which is just off the main road so the traffic isn't bothersome. The community is traditional Italian and few locals speak English (which was just the authentic Italian experience we were looking for). The village is very pretty and traditional but be aware there are steep hills and lots of steps as is the case in most areas around the lake. There is a fabulous trattorria and a well stocked mini market in the village square but as is typical of Italian businesses they have varying and sometimes unpredictable opening hours. A fabulous supermarket "Bennett" is just ten minutes drive away. The house provided the perfect base for us to explore the lake as it has excellent road links but I have to be honest, I would advise that a car is necessary as in my opinion the available public transport and limited local amenities just wouldn't enable you to make the most of your stay in this wonderful part of the world. Overall the house provided a wonderful tranquil, authentic lake side experience which we thoroughly enjoyed. We look forward to returning sometime in the future.

"A piece of Lake Como heaven!"
What a discovery! The lakeside views from the house are stunning and it is hard to drag yourself away from watching the ever changing vista from the balcony! We recieved the warmest welcome from Rachel and a complimentary bottle of Prosecco was on ice for our arrival. The house was like a home from home - it was decorated to such a high standard and had everything that you could possibly need for a self catering stay. However, there are so many good local restaurants (the one in Moltrasio village square is a must!) and in Como that we chose to eat out most evenings. The house is perfectly situated to explore the Lake Como region by boat, car or fernacular rail!!! We would highly recommend this house for an absolute escape from it and we are already planning our next great escape!!
