From Mojstrana, three valleys lead into the very heart of the Julian Alps. Krma valley represents the easiest but also the longest way to Mt. Triglav, and surrounded by gorgeous mountains, the area is popular with hikers and walkers during the whole year. Kot valley is remarkable for its solitude and quietness. Overshadowed by the pinnacled north face of Rjavina, it represents the shortest way to the top of Slovenia's highest mountain (Triglav). Finally, Vrata valley, the most impressive of the three, will surprise you with its tremendous Triglav North Face, that shuts off the end of the valley like an enormous natural curtain.

The Upper Carniola Region
Mountains and lakes are the big attraction in Gorenska (Upper Carniola) the province that in many ways feels more 'Slovenian' than any other. The start of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps are a short drive from Ljubljana and and right on the door step of Mojstrana where Vila Oniks is situated. Recently a new Museum has been built in the village to celebrate the history of mountaineering and from there you can continue along the Vrata Valley passed the Pericnik Waterfall taking in wonderful scenery as you walk towards the north face of the Triglav mountain. A 15 minute drive from Mojstrana you will reach Kranjska Gora, the main ski area of the region. Here you will find slopes to suit all abilities and several ski schools for learner. This is also a popular area for cross country skiing with a track stretching along the whole of the valley. At the bottom of the slopes and in the village itself there are several bars, cafes and restaurants which serve a wide variety of dishes at very reasonable prices. Passing through Kranjska Gora you will reach Podkoren a small but beautifully pictureque village which is where the Europan mens Slalom Race is held in March 2015. This is a great event and attracts some world class skiers. In the evening there is a big party in Kranjska Gora and a great time is head by all. A little way beyond Podkoren is Planica where the FIS World Cup Ski Jumping Finals will be held this coming winter, (19th - 22nd March 2015) again another great event with an amazing atmospher and plenty of partying, not to be missed. If you want to experience different ski slopes these can be easily reached easily in either Italy at Tarvisio & Sella Nevea (Approx 40mintues drive) or Austria at Nassfeld, Gerlitzen, Bad Kleinkirchheim and Turracher Hohe (all less then 1hr drive away) Not to forget other slopes in Slovenia itself at either Krvavec, near Ljubljana and Vogel overlooking the beautiful Bohinj Lake. There is also the cross country trails at Pokljuka the world-famous biathlon centre with its new, well-equipped sports centre and hotel. Here snow turns the lowlands white, cross-country skiers are delighted to find suitable trails close to many of the tourist locations. Many trails are laid out through picturesque glades or fairy-tale snowy forests, and they are usually free.
Mojstrana itself has plenty of facilities, including a supermarket with an ATM. There is a great restaurant serving local dishes, a pizzeria and bars. In the winter there is a small ski-slope in the village which opens during the day and evening for night skiing, snow permitting. The area is surrounded by wonderful scenery and shadowed by Triglav Slovenia's largest mountain. Across the valley is the small but very picturesque village of Dovje. Buses depart frequently from Ratece via Mojstrana and Jesenice where there is a mainline train station with services to many parts of the country. The bus service can also take you to Tarvisio in Italy. There are so many places to visit and sights to see you may need more than a week in this wonderful country.

I am a mad keen cyclist and I wasn't disappointed. The new track from Mojstrana to Kranjska Gora and beyond is great for any standard of cyclist, young or old. However the off road mountain tracks are incredible and not for the faint hearted. Vila Oniks is situated perfectly for this kind of holiday, there are well marked tracks for miles. The village is also well equipt with a good supermarket, gre aat restaurant and a couple of bars (after a long hard ride) of course!!! The house is large and spacious but with a great communal area for eating. On a warm evening you can sit outside under the patio and take in the still evening air. All in all a great holiday in a great vila, a lovely village an a wonderful country, can't wait to go again.

"Great for Big Groups"
We have stayed here multiple times with large groups at varying times of the year, all of which were fantastic. The house is great accommodation for a big group with everyone having separate spaces as well as large communal areas. The facilities that the house provides are hard to be beat. The large fire is always a nice treat after a long day skiing and the outdoor seating area offers a lovely place to relax with a glass of wine or two in the summer after a stroll into the mountains.
The facilities in the local village are fantastic, you can enjoy a beer or three in one of the local bars, all of which are located within walking distance. The local pizzeria is a must visit, as it is again within walking distance from the house. There is another fantastic restaurant in the Village which is just a 5 minuet walk away which has a fantastic food menu. I do recommend the half chicken and a glass of the house red, you wont be disappointed. The local shop is within walking distance and provides everything you will need, from bread and butter to the local beers and wines.
We have visited this house in all seasons and no matter when you do you wont be disappointed. The house is perfectly situated to many ski resorts in Italy, Austria and Slovenia, and if you can't make your mind up why not just ski all 3 at "Arnoldstein". The summer is just as spectacular with nice walks up into the mountains, the local waterfall in Mojstrana is again a must see.
Can't wait to get back there!
