The Costa de Almeria region
The Costa de Almeria is a region of unique beauty and has until recently been southern Spain´s undiscovered gem. The long golden sands of Mojacar Playa is just one of the reasons this area has become a top destination for Spanish and British holidaymakers.
The landmark hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo, with its distinctive houses, labyrinth of narrow streets and Bohemian character is another major attraction. A vibrant mix of residential and holiday complexes, golf courses and unchanged towns and villages stretch out along the coastline; the port of Garrucha, with its renowned seafood restaurants, and the impressive harbour of Almerimar, are all must-sees.
Mojacar / Mojacar Playa area
The long uncrowded sandy beaches are one of its main attractions and among the best in Almeria. The beaches are 14km long, with a large part being designated an area of natural beauty. Only 7 km have been developed and they consistently earn European Blue Flag awards for cleanliness.
The beach resort has been developed over the past two decades, it is now a lively resort with much to offer with beach bars, local and international restaurants, discos, hotels and shops. The resort enforces a building restriction to prevent it becoming a high rise concrete development; residential buildings are restricted to two storeys and hotels can't be built higher than four floors. Giving you a feeling of space that cannot be found anywhere else along the eastern Spanish coastline.
Mojácar, with its hill-top village offers both history & romance.
Mojácar Pueblo is a picturesque sight of whitewashed buildings and steep and winding, cobbled streets. Perched high on a hill in the Sierra Cabrera it overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. It was a centre of trade for the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans but the Moorish influence dating from the 8th Century, is most visible.
The place is a melting pot of cultures, indeed, it is said to have proportionately one of the most international blend of people in Spain. It is also a haven to people with an interest in the arts, many writers, painters and photographers have made Mojácar their home. Moreover, it is a very popular tourist destination thanks to its unique charm, relaxed atmosphere and warm hospitality.
There are variety of interesting boutiques and shops to tempt you or why not relax and have a beer or two in the many excellent bars and street cafes. Every Wednesday is market day and the streets are home to numerous stalls selling essentials to the locals.
Valle del Este Golf Club is an 18 hole, par 71 golf course of 5,696 meters about 10/15 minutes from Mojácar opened July 2002 that utilises the desert landscape to its maximum beauty. Integrating these natural settings it makes the course both attractive and challenging to play. Correct club selection is essential if you are to make par. With superb elevated tees, true & fast greens plus a number of water features, including the magnificent water course running along side the 18th hole, all make this course irresistible to play.
As well as year round activities such as golf, diving and horse riding, during the summer months there are a wide range of organized activities, live music, flamenco, quiz nights, volley ball competitions and village fiestas. As in most Mediterranean countries, children are welcome just about every where. For younger children, there are many playgrounds dotted along the beach as well as organized activity groups supervised by professional nannies. For older children the Pueblo Indalo Complex is popular for its table games, discos and evening shows, all ages will enjoy Mojacar mini golf, Garrucha go - cart track, The Sorbas caves, Vera aqua park and Tabernas theme parks.
For those looking for an active holiday there is much to do. There is a full range of watersports including jet ski-ing, canoeing, water ski-ing, sailing, big game fishing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and scuba diving. If you have a head for heights why not take a flight in a microlight over the beach at the Indalo Wings Microlight Centre or try your hand at paragliding.
Also in the winter months there is skiing and snowboarding available in the Sierra Nevada mountains, situated just 2 hours drive from the beach.
For those interested in wildlife and in that we mean flora and fauna, not a heavy night hitting the bars – you’ll find a lot to enjoy without going very far, in fact, the region includes some of the most unique and varied wild life habitats in the whole of western Europe. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park and The Sierra Alhamilla Mountains are interesting and rewarding areas for the wild life enthusiast; over half of the 8000 species of plants native to Spain are common in Andalucia, including 150 species which are unique to the region. Many of the plants that are indigenous to Andalucia grow only in the arid areas of Andalucia.
