The Costa de Almeria region
Costa Almeria has a warm sunny climate with areas of natural beauty. This beautiful and largely un-spoilt region features more than 200 miles of dramatic coastline. The weather is superb, as Almeria boasts one of the driest and sunniest climates in Europe with around 320 days of sunshine.
There are first-class water sports facilities and it’s also a golfer’s paradise, with several superb courses including the internationally acclaimed Desert Springs Golf Resort and the newly opened Macenas Golf and Beach Resort Tennis, golf and horse riding are all almost on the doorstep. The beaches are superb with wide golden stretches of sand and there are some quite undeveloped coves to be found a little further away.
Skiing 2.5 hours away in winter months. Mojacar old town only a short drive away is worth a visit. The pretty whitewashed village is perched high on the hillside with extensive views of the surrounding area and is steeped in history.
Mojacar / Mojacar Playa area
MOJACAR PUEBLO is a beautiful Moorish village which from a distance looks as if it has been untouched for centuries. It has a distinctly fairytale quality with its clusters of ancient whitewashed buildings clinging to the sides of the mountain. Mojacar is the largest and most popular tourist centre of this south-eastern corner of Spain but still remains unspoilt. For visitors, the old village is a delightful labyrinth of winding, cobbled streets with magnificent views to the mountains and sea, with wonderful bars and tasteful restaurants.
Just a short distance down the hill is MOJACAR PLAYA, the beach is 17 kilometres long, a large part of which is a designated area of natural beauty. It is estimated that 9 kilometres are developed but uncrowded and with long golden sands and Chiringuitos offering refreshing drinks, delicious lunches and tapas. Recently, three European Blue Flag Awards have been awarded to the beaches for cleanliness.
Residential buildings are restricted to only two storeys and hotels cannot be built higher than four floors. The result offers plenty of activities for the foreign holidaymaker whilst retaining its traditional Spanish charm and character.
Just along the Paseo del Meditarraneo is the beautiful and lively fishing town of GARRUCHA which still retains much of its original charm. It has a great selection of tapas bars and excellent seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day. They are supplied with fresh fish from nearby port, if you find yourself down on the seafront at dawn you will experience the typically Mediterranean sight of a flotilla of small fishing boats setting out to sea. Later the fishermen host a daily fish auction at around 5pm in the quayside fish market.
Neighbouring VERA is home to a traditional Bull ring which still hosts regular performances and has a small museum inside for those interested in this traditional Spanish pastime. It also has a great water-park which is ideal for families and suitable for All ages.
TURRE is ostensibly a small village, which is growing rapidly. Situated to the north of the Sierra Cabrera on the river Aguas. It has one main street and the usual meandering side streets you expect in small Spanish villages. With many shops, restaurants, tapas bars, Internet cafes and coffee shops Fridays is market day in the heart of the village where you can purchase fresh local produce and barter for a bargain!
There are many local fiestas in the area which are too numerous to list, here are just of a few of the most popular ones:
March 10th Dia de la Vieja or Day of the Old Lady. Countryside picnics with large groups of family and friends. Each group, observing a custom lost in time takes with them a home-made doll designed to look like an old woman (much like Guy Fawkes in England) the inside of which is filled with sweets. At the end of the day the piñata is hung on a wooden frame and stoned by the children until the sweets are revealed. The winter season is thus over and a fruitful spring is greeted.
June 11th/12th Moors & Christians. Without a doubt Mojacar's biggest festival. Processions, jousting and mock battles on the beaches to re-enact the fighting and finally the peaceful co-existence of the two cultures the Moors and Christians. Stunning costumes and horsemanship.
June 23rd Festival San Juan. Bonfires, music and parties on the beach until sunset
Aug 25th /29th San Augustin. Mojacar's Saint's Day. August 28th. The traditional festival is held during several days around the date and always includes the nearest weekend. Along with evening dances with live groups. Other enjoyable concerts and sports activities are held. Also not to be missed is the 'bringing of the water' from the fountain to be offered for the Saint's blessing. When the Mojaquera maidens wear their traditional outfits.
