The Costa de Almeria region
The Costa Almeria is located in the south-east of Spain less than 100 miles from the coast of North Africa and remains relatively unknown. Set within the Andalusian province of Almeria, it enjoys 200 miles of largely undeveloped coastline and one of Europe’s warmest and sunniest climates with the sun shining for more than 3000 hours a year .Almeria still remains unspoilt - an example of 'real Spain'.
The area is very diverse with developing Spanish property resorts such as Almerimar, Cabo de Gatos and Roquetas de Mar situated within a short drive from the snows of Sierra-Nevada which has skiing in the winter. In the Tabernas desert you can find the "Mini Hollywood" which was the location for the filming of many a spaghetti western movies, such as 'A Fistfull Of Dollars'. In fact, many of the film sets have been preserved and are opened for visitors. Despite it's rugged landscape and shortage of fertile soil, Almeria managed to become an important farming area in Spain and it is best known for it's oranges and white grapes. The province of Almeria may initially appear to be a desert-like landscape but look a little closer and you will realise that it is the Andalucian province with the longest stretch of beaches littered with tiny hidden coves with perfectly clear water. Because of the diverse landscapes, the range of sports activities ranges from all water sports to hiking, paragliding, horse riding and, of course, golf. The modern Almeria Airport is situated roughly 8km east of Almeria and with regular low cost flights from the UK offers an easy escape route to your Spanish property.
Almería, thanks to its strategic situation on the Mediterranean, has been home to different civilisations throughout its history. Significant traces of their presence can be seen in the archaeological remains scattered all over the province.
There is evidence of a very special prehistoric culture in Los Millares and el Argar. Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Greeks exploited its mines and traded up and down its coast. The Romans, who settled here in the 3rd century B.C., transformed it into "Porto Magnus" on the Mediterranean and dominated the area until the later arrival of the Visigoths in the 7th century. The Arabs created the current capital in the 10th century, and from here they ruled over one of the most important taifas (kingdoms) in Muslim Spain. The Arab influence was the most significant, as they remained in Spain for almost eight centuries. There are several monuments which bear witness to the fertile history of this land. The castles and fortresses provide an exceptional historic testimony for understanding the societies of the past.
Long exposed to border conflicts and the need to defend itself, the province of Almería has a large number and variety of castles which comprise a heritage known to few. The mining industry brought about an economic recovery in the 19th century

Review Submitted: July 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009 guests from Brighton, UK Lovely holiday at Casa Bonita! The website gives a perfect description of the casa and its facilities ensuring our expectations were met and even exceeded! The property is well looked after and there is really everything you need there. Gardens and pool were beautiful -many a happy hour there! The area is great if you don't want to hire a car like us as everything is walkable. Plenty of choices of bars and restaurants from cheap basic to foodie trendy jobbies. We liked Titos - great food, and BeachComber for easy child friendly lunches.
5/5 Rating: Highly recommended! for Families and especially Couples who desire Privacy as there are separate Bedrooms and Bathrooms one on each floor and being right on the SeaFront couldn't be better placed!
