The Costa de Almeria region
Cortijo Cabrera is in the eastern part of Andalucia, in the province of Almeria (the name comes from the Moorish for ‘Mirror of the Sea’). This is where many say the sun goes to spend the winter. We are blessed with the driest and sunniest climate in mainland Europe, with an average 322 days sunshine a year, much enjoyed by walkers and golfers all year round.
This area offers complete peace and tranquillity with a wealth of flora and fauna, palms to orchids, wild boar to eagles; yet Cabrera is less than 20 minutes drive to the warm blue of the Mediterranean at the pleasant resort of Mojacar Playa and only 10 minutes from the market town of Turre. The scenery is spectacular with mountain vistas and distant views, olive, lemon and orange groves surround you and goat herds still tend their flocks in these hills which the Moors terraced and farmed in centuries past.
Mojacar / Cabrera area
Cabrera has excellent restaurants within walking distance, a 9 golf course and further restaurants a 5 minute drive down the valley to Cortijo Grande with 4 excellent 18 hole courses around 25 minutes drive from the house. There is a tennis court, petanque & horse riding within 5 minutes, walks can start at your door.
For the kids there is a water park near Garrucha
Beaches – The beachfront is sandy between Garucha and way the other side of Mojacar. We think the best nearby swimming is behind a breakwater near Pueblo Indalo where windsurfers etc are hired. There are many almost deserted beaches down the coast towards San Jose and Cabo de Gatto.
Garrucha Port – buy your own fish for the BBQ and there is a great restaurant by fish quay. Sailing, boat trips, fishing and Scuba are all available nearby
Mojacar Pueblo is a traditional Andalucian village, a Pueblo Blanco, with quaint squares and alleyways to explore and plenty of shops and restaurants
Mojacar Playa ofers miles of sandy beaches, restaurants shops and traditional beach bars.
Cabo de Gatto Parque Natural – A large area designated as a natural park with interesting coast line and little villages. Including Las Negras, black sea cliffs and the fishing village at San Jose.
Velez Blanco – A fine castle up in the mountains with good restaurants nearby. It’s a nice afternoon out. Drive up via Sta Maria de Nieva, turn of motorway at J553, for a ride up through the Almond groves. Take a fleece in winter, you are going higher!
Skiing in the Sierra Nevada is a 2 ½ hour drive away as are Granada and the Alhambra, very much worth an outing, you need to pre book for the Alhambra, particularly in season. An overnight is a good idea and you can spend the next day crossing the Sierra Nevada and driving back through the Alpujarras - a lovely hill walking area with villages at over 4000 ft altitude and great scenery. Buy your Serrano Ham in Trevelez, there are thousands on view.
Mini Hollywood - The old studios from the spaghetti western days, now theme parks with shows.
Shopping, Groceries and Wine – Super Turre has an excellent choice and is just down the hill in Turre opposite a convenient bar. There are also local markets in the surrounding towns on most week days.
Pottery – Visit Nijar for the best choice and prices because this is where its made.
Earthen Ware– Visit Sorbas for garden pots of all shapes and sizes and other pottery.
Souvenirs – Everywhere!
Jarapas (rag rugs) – A good shop on left of road between Mojacar Pueblo and the Playa
