The Costa de Almeria region
Bedar is situated within the wider area of the 'Costa de Almeria'. The climate is one of the driest & sunniest in Europe with approximately 320 days of sunshine each year. The area is renowned for its long, clear sunny days that can last throughout the whole year. It is an ideal choice for those wanting to get away from the uncertanty of the UK climate .
Historically, this part of Andalucia has been greatly influenced by Moorish culture & art. Local villages & towns still celebrate the early Moorish & Christian contributions to Spanish culture through their many fiestas.
Many places of interest that can be reached comfortably on half day & full day trips. These include: The beautiful city of Granada with its world famous Alhambra Palaces, its Arab quarters & it's tapas bars - 2 hrs. approx; The old cities/towns of Murcia, Lorca & Cartegena are well worth a visit; The beautiful Sierra Navada National Park has many ski slopes & walking tracks. This area often has snow for up to 5 months of the year. Depending upon your destination, reaching this large national park will take between 1.75 & 2.50 h rs. approx.; The isolated Coastal Cabo de Gata National Park is an easy 30 minute drive from Bedar; The 'hanging houses' & caves at Sorbas are ideal for a short trip. A little further away are the cavehouses of Cuevas de Almanzora & the Spaghetti Western theme parks in the Desert National Park aprox. 2 hrs away.
Mojacar / Bedar area
Bedar is an authentic Spanish village, recently voted one of the top 20 places to live in Spain. It has been in existance since around the 8th centuary. It nestles into the lower slopes of the Filabres mountains & is just a 15 to 20 minute drive from the coastal resorts of Garrucha & Mojacar Playa, as is the white coastal hill village of Mojacar Pueblo. Because of the quality of light & the diverse landscape, the village is popular with artists. They are particulary attracted by the naturally vibrant colours provided by the orange & lemon trees in summer, the pomegranit trees & prickly pears in autumn & the softer, delicate almond blossom in spring.
Local amenities are comprehensive. In Bedar there is a local mini-market, (a new 'metro type' supermarket is due to open before the end of 2008). Additional facilities include: 4 bars, 3 restaurants, a post office, a bank, a bakers, a doctors surgery & a pharmacy. All these are within easy walking distance of the villa. One restaurant, just above the 'fuente' - the fountain where drinking water is still collected - is nearer, as it is en-route into the village.
Nature lovers will love the diversity of flora & fauna around Bedar & Cortijo Canaica Romero. In previous years up to 70 species of birds have been seen. Protected wild Ibex goats can be spotted on the high mountain ridges alround the villa & golden eagles frequently glide on the thermals above the house. Tortoises can be seen in the natural 'campo' around the villa itself. The villa is set amidst terraces of rosemary, lavender & thyme. Indeed, until 'Cortijo Canaica Romero' was built ( the name means 'the house of the rosemary terraces'), the mountainside was used by the villagers to grow their herbs (rosemary in particular).
For golf lovers, there are a number of good & interesting golf courses nearby: The Cortijo Grande course is a hidden gem, set deep in a quiet green valley beneath the stunning Cabrera Mountains. It is conveniently situated between Bedar & Turre on the 'old road'; Desert Springs Golf course has much more than golf to offer. It's well worth a drive just to experience the imaginative 'desert' setting; Both Valle Del Este & Marina Golf Courses are in lovely settings and have breathtaking seaviews.
Colourful local markets display a wide variety of interesting locally grown & caught produce. In particular, the more obscure ones are often patronised by 'smallholders' selling their much sought-after seasonal fruit & vegetables. The local markets are also renown for their dried hams & quality cheeses. Fresh fish & seafood can be bought in the markets, from local supermarkets & directly form ports such as Guarrucha. The area is famous for its barbecued seafood & grilled sardines. (A detailed guide, including dates & times, is available at the villa.)
