This ensures that our guests need not worry about the prospect of having to navigate their cars along uneven, bumpy, dusty, unmade approach roads.
The large flat parking area allows our clients to drive right up to the spacious covered outdoor entrance porch. With just 2 shallow steps up to the entrace porch, the whole layout ensures that our guests can easily unload heavy cases & shopping without having to negotiate steep steps or narrow winding driveways. Once in the entrance porch it's straight through the large double doors & into the villa - no further steps inside the property -
ideal if someone in your party uses a modern wheelchair or feels more at ease with a holiday property that is all on one level .
The vast, secluded outdoor central courtyard, with its views towards the sea, is ideal for sunbathing & alfrecco dining. It has a glass topped table & four chairs, gas BBQ and minimalist cacti garden. At the far end of the courtyard is the white balustraded terrace that stretches across the full width of the villa. You can access the courtyard & terrace from the lounge area, the dining/kitchen area & the entrance hall via the 3 very large glass sliding doors. Just one or two shallow steps takes you outside the villa.
The 33 foot long pool is situated on the Bedar Village side of the villa. Its enclosed by low white walls & decorative arches, allowing our guests to swim & relax on the comfortable sunloungers whilst enjoying the stunning views & the serenity of the surrounding 'campo'. A section of the pool terrace provides a shaded & curtained sitting area with table & chairs - an ideal setting for enjoying a cooling drink & apperitivos. The outdoor shower is set within a free-standing tiled spiral screen.
Cyprus trees, palms & evergreen shrubs have been carefully planted to enhance the villa without compromising the extensive views.
The outside areas of the villa, the pool itself & the surrounding paved area have been fitted with a number of outside lights. It provides the perfect backdrop for the famed warm, balmy evenings with which we are blessed in this unique part of Spain.

The Costa de Almeria region

Bedar is situated within the wider area of the 'Costa de Almeria'. The climate is one of the driest & sunniest in Europe with approximately 320 days of sunshine each year. The area is renowned for its long,clear sunny days that can last throughout the whole year. It is an ideal choice for those wanting to get away from the uncertanty of the UK climate .
Historically, this part of Andalucia has been greatly influenced by Moorish culture & art. Local villages & towns still celebrate the early Moorish & Christian contributions to Spanish culture through their many fiestas.
Many places of interest that can be reached comfortably on half day & full day trips. These include:
The beautiful city of Granada with its world famous Alhambra Palaces, its Arab quarters & its tapas bars - 2 hrs. approx;
The old cities/towns of Murcia, Lorca & Cartegena are well worth a visit;
The beautiful Sierra Navada National Park has many ski slopes & walking tracks. This area often has snow for up to 5 months of the year. Depending upon your destination, reaching this large national park will take between 1.75 & 2.50 hrs. approx.;
The isolated Coastal Cabo de Gata National Park is an easy 30 minute drive from Bedar;
The 'hanging houses' & caves at Sorbas are ideal for a short trip. A little further away are the cave houses of Cuevas de Almanzora & the Spaghetti Western theme parks in the Desert National Park aprox. 2 hrs away.
The Mojacar / Bedar area
Bedar is an authentic Spanish village, recently voted one of the top 20 places to live in Spain. It has been in existence since around the 8th century. It nestles into the lower slopes of the Filabres mountains & is just a 15 to 20 minute drive from the coastal resorts of Garrucha & Mojacar Playa, as is the white coastal hill village of Mojacar Pueblo. Because of the quality of light & the diverse landscape, the village is popular with artists. They are particularly attracted by the naturally vibrant colours provided by the orange & lemon trees in summer, the pomegranate trees & prickly pears in autumn & the softer, delicate almond blossom in spring.
Local amenities are comprehensive. In Bedar there is a local mini-market, (a new 'metro type' supermarket is due to open before the end of 2008). Additional facilities include: 4 bars, 3 restaurants, a post office, a bank, a bakers, a doctors surgery & a pharmacy. All these are within easy walking distance of the villa. One restaurant, just above the 'fuente' - the fountain where drinking water is still collected - is nearer, as it is en-route into the village.
Nature lovers will love the diversity of flora & fauna around Bedar & Cortijo Canaica Romero. In previous years up to 70 species of birds have been seen. Protected wild Ibex goats can be spotted on the high mountain ridges around the villa & golden eagles frequently glide on the thermals above the house. Tortoises can be seen in the natural 'campo' around the villa itself. The villa is set amidst terraces of rosemary, lavender & thyme. Indeed, until 'Cortijo Canaica Romero' was built ( the name means 'the house of the rosemary terraces'), the mountainside was used by the villagers to grow their herbs (rosemary in particular).
For golf lovers, there are a number of good & interesting golf courses nearby:
The Cortijo Grande course is a hidden gem, set deep in a quiet green valley beneath the stunning Cabrera Mountains. It is conveniently situated between Bedar & Turre on the 'old road';
Desert Springs Golf course has much more than golf to offer. It's well worth a drive just to experience the imaginative 'desert' setting;
Both Valle Del Este & Marina Golf Courses are in lovely settings and have breathtaking sea views.
Colourful local markets display a wide variety of interesting locally grown & caught produce. In particular, the more obscure ones are often patronised by 'smallholders' selling their much sought-after seasonal fruit & vegetables. The local markets are also renownd for their dried hams & quality cheeses. Fresh fish & seafood can be bought in the markets, from local supermarkets & directly form ports such as Guarrucha. The area is famous for its barbecued seafood & grilled sardines.

We have recently returned from our first visit to Cortijo Canaica Romero. Our group of four were visiting Almeria for the first time and hoped to access some of the unique Regional Parks to get in some walking and sight seeing. The villa proved to be the ideal base. In simple terms the accommodation and the service offered by Chris and Christine were exceptional. Booking, confirmation and receipt of local information was trouble free and as promised the villa manager was there to greet us even at 10.30pm. We flew with Ryanair to Murcia and picked up a hire car through Atesa (Excellent service). Perfect directions and maps provided by Christine enabled us to arrive at our destination just two hours after landing. The complimentary Rioja and chocolates were a lovely touch. After a quick explanation of how things worked (air con etc) we took the five minute drive to Bedar. As you would expect in a mountainous area which offers such impressive views the roads are not straight but the journey is straight forward if you don't try and take your car through the villages very narrow streets. The local bars and restaurants were all open and the cost of food and drink was impressively cheap compared to other more touristy locations. There is a strong ex pat community and the sound of UK voices is not uncommon although the true Spanish aspects of the village are very strong. Three good restaurants in the village plus the villa BBQ served us well for our seven day stay. We used to drive down, park the car and walk back having sampled the local food, wine and even cocktails. The walk back takes from 20 to 30 minutes (torch essential - also provided). I t was my pleasure the next morning to then stroll down to the' Panaderia' ( Bread shop) and small local supermarket,' pick up bread, bottled water and the car and arrive back at the villa to enjoy breakfast on the terrace. The pool was as Christine had hinted, by late October a little cool but we still enjoyed some lazy mornings around the pool on the loungers. The local history is very much dominated by Mining and there are some easy well signed 3 to 4 hour walks which take you right into the heart of the local landscapes. Further afield we visited Mojacar, Fort Bravo, Almeria town and spent our last day in Cartagena which is en route to the airport if you have a late flight. The only word of caution would be to those who can't drive or don't like driving on narrow roads. Even though they are not busy you need to concentrate particularly if you are not familiar with left hand driving All in all the villa offered everything as promised and we would certainly recommend without reservation if you want a peaceful break in a spotless well equipped villa that is exactly as presented on the websites. |

We have recently stayed at Cortijo Canaica Romero for two weeks. On arriving at the villa we could not believe we had chosen to stay somewhere that was in such an amazing location, the views from the terraces were stunning. The villa was home from home and had everything that you needed to make your stay a relaxing and enjoyable one. The villa was outstanding, well maintained and spotlessly clean and tidy. The area around Bedar is so pretty and unspoilt and well worth exploring as you soon land upon some fantastic mountain villages with authentic restaurants to tempt your tastebuds. Everyone who we met in and around the Bedar area were friendly and helpful. |
