The Costa de Almeria region
The Costa Almeria is the driest part of Europe with approximately 320 days of sunshine each year. The Almeria region is one of the last parts of Spain to be developed, and does not therefore have the mass tourism that most other 'costas' are now asociated with.
Mojacar, and its playa, is the nearest major 'tourist' resort about 15 mins drive away, has a huge variety of bars and restaurants with many different cuisines. The old town of Mojacar pueblo is high on the hill above the playa, with its little cobbled streets and many craft shops, bars and restaurants. The shops, bars and restaurants of Mojacar playa stretch for several miles along the road through the resort. There are many beaches, just as many churingitos (beach bars) with menu del dia being a firm favourite for good value meals.
"Mini Hollywood" is an hour away, near Tabernas, where many spagetti westerns were shot including " The good, the bad, and the ugly" and "A fistful of dollars". Granada is approximately 2 hours away and the ski resort of the Sierra Nevadas a further half hour drive.
The coast is completely unspoilt and the rugged coastline stretches south of Mojacar through the Cabo de Gato-Nijar national park. Almeria city is worth a visit with the Alcazaba castle and the port.
Mojacar / Bedar area
The old mountain village of Bedar nestles on the slopes of the Filabres Mountains with views beyond of the Sierra Cabrera and down to the Mediterranean Sea. It is said that the original inhabitants were mainly artists migrating from the Mojacar Pueblo.
The village is still popular with artists inspired by the varied colours of the landscapes from the blossom on the almond groves in the spring to the vibrant colours of the orange and lemon trees in the summer. Bedar has good local facilities including 4 bars, 2 restaurants, a mini supermarket, bakers, pharmacy and bank.
Bedar is a nature lover's paradise. If you enjoy unrestricted countryside walks and appreciate flora and fauna then you will soon recognise this is an exceptional place by any standards. In the past year some 70 species of birds have been seen including the golden eagle. Wild flowers particularly in the spring (February - April) are numerous including wild orchids. Bugonveila is in abundance with various shades of vibrant colours and bright blue plumbago and bird of paradise.
