The Costa de Almeria region
Almeria has been blessed by nature with no less than 175 kilometres of shoreline. Not every foot of the shoreline is beaches and coves of fine sand; sometimes the sea smashes straight into the cliffs. However most coastal villages can boast their own beaches of fine sand. Even in the most developed areas building and services never encroach upon the areas set aside for bathing. The beaches are still predominantly enjoyed by local Spanish families, rather than being packed out with tourists.
Mojacar / Mojacar Playa area
Mojacar is in one of the driest and hottest areas of mainland Spain. The sun shines here for an average of 322 days a year so it's no surprise to find this stretch of coastlne awash with water sports all year round. Winter doesn't really exist in Mojacar where the temperature averages around 18C in the winter months. This is paradise for golfers, hikers and watersports enthusiasts. There are an abundance of Andalucian mountain villages to explore and, no matter what the season, you can sail, fish, windsurf, water ski, canoe, scuba dive...or take a bird's eye view of the seascape from a micro-light. The beaches are one of the major attractions of the area and there are almost 17 kilometers of them to explore. You'll find long, uncrowded sandy beaches and delightful little coves only accessible via steep tracks. The beaches in the immediate vincinity consistently earn the European Blue Flag for cleanliness.
Vera Playa and Garrucha are only a short drive from Mojacar, where again you will find several kilometers of white sandy beaches, lots of restaurants and bars. The aqua park, just on the outskirts of Vera is well worth a visit.
Mojacar Pueblo This spectacular Moorish fortress town stands on a towering crag overlooking a shore graced by pristine beaches and the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean, which has a curious distinction all of its own: American cartoonist Walt Disney is said to have been born here, before emigrating with his parents to the United States. Like many other villages in south-eastern Spain, in the 1960's Mojacar had become a ghost town, since most of its active inhabitants had moved north to find work in the factories of the Barcelona region, and further afield. To attract new residents, the town's mayor gave land away to anyone who promised to build, and within a year picturesque Mojacar had become a thriving art colony. Mainstream tourists and holiday-makers were also later attracted by the beauty and charm of the place and the following decades saw the development of its shoreline, with the construction of hotels and villas.
Fortunately, the village has still retained much of its original character, with its Moorish fortress called El Torreón and the Arch of Luciana, as well as the honeycomb of whitewashed, winding streets, each of which seems to lead the traveller to a lookout over the sparkling Mediterranean.
Mojacar Village is where enchantment, legend and mystery lie in wait for you. Mojacar is home to the symbol par excellence of Almeria: the Indalo. The Indalo can still today be seen painted on the façade of houses, its magic power safeguarding the inhabitants from all sorts of spells and evil spirits. The village consists of white, steep, higgledy-piggledy alleys and streets, and you never quite know where one begins and another ends. The house walls are bedecked with geranium-crammed flower pots, the windows covered with grillwork, the shops and bars that suddenly disappear beneath an arch or hover over an infinite staircase, you only need to lose yourself in this half-Arab, half Andalusian maze for is very soul to be revealed to you!
For the golfers, there are currently four courses (more are planned) within 10- 20 minutes drive - Sierra Cabrera (set in spectacular mountain scenery), Marina de la Torre (a golf course set on a hillside overlooking the sea), Valle del Este (altogether a more challenging course) and the prestigious Desert Springs.
