About the home
Almería is the most unspoiled of the Spanish costas and until recent years almost unknown except to discerning Spanish visitors who have been coming here for many years. Las Tortugas, despite its quiet rural location, is convenient for all three local beaches of Garrucha, Mojácar and Vera, each offering a different experience and in the case of Mojácar boasting three blue flags.
Our spacious hideaway has everything you need to enjoy a great family holiday in this chill-out destination. This is an area for enjoying beaches and eating great sea food - not for you if you are looking for a lively nightlife destination, although it has quite a buzz in August.
It used to be our own home while we were building the house where we now live and we have left it very much as a it was, a well equipped and comfortable family home. Many guests have remarked that they have never found a kitchen so well equipped for enthusiastic cooks.
It has great 360º views but the main orientation is to the Sierra Cabrera in the south where you can glimpse the Pueblo of Mojácar perched on the eastern end. To the east is the sea at Garrucha. The beautiful 10metre Pebbletec pool has a submerged bench at the eastern end - perfect for sitting with a chilled glass of bubbly at the end of the day to watch our stunning sunsets.
The area which is most used both winter and summer is the large covered poolside terrace - ideal for dining al fresco and for nodding off over a book in the heat of the day. It even has a fridge for drinks so you don't need to go far for a cold drink. The WIFI connection reaches throughout the house including in this terrace.
The house is arranged on two floors, each with a sitting room, kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, making it an ideal house for two families travelling together or for three generations.

Maximum occupation is 8 adults/children plus two babies in cots and also two children up to 12 years old who can be accommodated on camp beds either in their parents' spacious bedrooms or in the upstairs sitting room which is rarely used in summer.
The three ensuite bath rooms have showers, two of them being large walk-in ones.
The main kitchen is on the ground floor and is fully equipped and there is a further kitchen upstairs, making it ideal for two families or three generations.

The pool does not have standard heating but a large solar pipe and also a cover which extends the swimming season usually from the beginning of April (or even March for the very strong!) to the end of October.

The Costa de Almeria region
Almería is the driest place in mainland Europe, indeed inland around the area of Tabernas, where the Spaghetti Westerns were made, is officially a desert. The landscapes are rugged and majestic, especially in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park about half an hour south of Las Tortugas. This area boasts some of the most beautiful, unspoiled beaches in the Mediterranean, including the famous Playa de los Muertos.
Our winter temperatures make this a great off-season destination and our favourite time of year is April-May and September-October when it is warm enough to swim and the evenings are balmy and fresh.
The Mojacar / Valle Del Este area
Las Tortugas is well placed for the three main local towns of Mojacar, Garruca and Vera. Inland Vera is a typical Spanish town and is the local administrative centre. Garrucha is also a typical town and has a fishing port. Mojacar Playa is the main resort and has 14 miles of beaches including several with the coveted blue flag. Its Chiringuitos (beach bar/restaurants) serving fish and paellas are justly famous and the focus of the resort. Some also have lively night life but Mojacar is more a chill-out/ family destination than a night club place.
At Vera there is an aqua park and at Garrucha a Go Kart track and there are plenty of opportunities for water sports at Mojacar.
There are five golf courses within easy reach of the house, including the popular if rather challenging Valle del Este literally five minutes' drive away.

The house is located within a couple of kms of the E15 motorway. Nearest airport is Almeria (1 hour) but there is much better choice of flights to Murcia (1.5 hours) and Alicante (2 hours). All three very simple as the motorways are accessed immediately outside the airports.

We stayed in Las Tortugas with 4 adults and 3 children.
Easy to get there, close to main roads and the motorway & the landlords sent a very precise route description. They were extremely helpful – did the initial shopping for us since we arrived late therefore no needs to get up early after a late arrival to shop for coffee and the usual other urgent supplies. The landlords were full of shopping ideas and other practical tips. We just asked and got it. They turned up each second day to do whatever was necessary to the pool, plants etc. Not to mention their fresh home made chocolate & banana cakes, the cinammon apple loafs and other flavors one could think off. Hmmmm….
Although it seemed initially that the house is in the middle of nowhere, well, it is, but…there are three supermarkets at just 15 mins and all easy to find. Again, precise indications given by the landlords. Beaches and nice places to visit at just 20 mins, and if you intend to have loud music: the neighbors won't complain as they live at least,some 500 meters up the road. No complaints when you had a our noisy late night water polo matches in the swimming pool.
The house is in a good shape and has everything from a dish washer, a washing machine and a toaster, a microwave and an enormous stove with 8 rings and two ovens….. I love cooking and I could find everything I needed in the citchen! All appliances are in good condition and function perfectly and are in good nick. Not to mention the amount of bathrooms and toilets and private rooms and sitting spaces in- & outside.
A large house, lots of space and and…. Even plenty of deck chairs, parasols and no clouds - a large dining and seating area in the shade and and… just don't forget your sun tan lotion. Even the anti slip floor in the swimming pool is worth mentioning.
We'd go there again if we had to…ha ha!

Stayed at Las Tortugas in 2007 when it was a B/B and had a wonderful time, so just had to return in 2010 as self catering, to find we were still very much under its spell. So glad that we made the effort this time to tear ourselves away from all that peace and quiet (not to mention the superb pool), to explore more of the area. Highly recommend the Cabo de Gata National Park as we were captivated by its beautiful unspoilt beaches and charming seaside villages, especially Agua Amarga. Las Tortugas is one not to be missed. Accommodation excellent and the owners couldn't do enough for us and knew everything about the area.

We spent 12 days there and all was perfect... We were there so friendly welcomed. All was prepared for our unforgettable stay (laundry, cleaning,...). Jane had even bought for us some food and beverage because of our late arrival.
Another very important point is the size of the property & villa. 4 sleeping rooms including bathroom for 3 of them, large swimming pool, terrace, bbq, etc...
