The Andalucia region
Almeria is generally a quiet rural area - you will find the Moorish influence evident in the buildings especially in places like the Mojacar Pueblo (old town). Mojacar is made up of two distinct areas - the old town (Pueblo) built into the mountain side which has lovely winding streets and spectacular views over the plains and the Playa which fronts the sea.
You can enjoy the beaches, nature reserves (Capo de Gato is nearby), lovely fishing ports (Villaricos is our favourite) or you can head for the mountains and see the rugged beauty of the Sierra Cabrera.
La Mata is a lovely Spanish complex of around 70 apartments in a quiet location at the northern edge of Mojacar Playa. There are local restaurants and bars that you can walk to from La Mata and, if you wish, there is a good local bus service that runs the length of the Playa and either up to the picturesque old town (Pueblo) of Mojacar or to neighbouring Garrucha with its fishing port, restaurants and shops.
Mojacar Playa has a very good selection of local shops, restaurants (of almost all varieties) and bars. Most nightlife is centred around the restaurants and bars.
In June Mojacar celebrates the Moors and Christians weekend (normally the weekend closest to the 10th). This fiesta celebrates the heroic deeds which led to the cultural religious interchange between Moors and Christians. This is Mojacar´s most important fiesta and everyone joins in. On the Sunday afternoon wthere is a grandiose procession which starts in Mojácar´s highest streets and ends in the lower part of the village, close to the fountain. Definitely a 'must see' if you are there as the costumes are truly spectacular.
Beaches; the beach area at Mojacar extends over several miles and you will find anything from fine sands to pebbles. For children the safest area is to the southern end of the Playa. Explore the coast by car and you will find some lovely secluded coves.
The Parque Aquatico on the edge of Vera Playa (about a 10 minute drive or a bus ride) has all of the usual water park features and is open from mid May to early September, it has a website so you can look up the opening dates and times and ticket prices. There is also a Go Kart track on the outskirts of Garrucha.
There is an Oasys Theme Park , 'Mini Hollywood' which is a wild-west town set deep in the mountains near Tabernas. This town is where many of the great "westerns" such as "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" filmed in the 1960s. A great day out for all the family with shows, a pool area and a zoo so lots to see and do, a great day out for the family.
Golf Courses: this area boasts several excellent golf courses ;
Mojacar: Playa Macenas and Marina Golf
Vera; Valle del Este Golf
Palomeres: Desert Springs
Things to do; Golf, walking, beaches, green bowling, horse riding, go-karting, high season water park, watersports, sea fishing and of course relaxing!!

"Nice apartment - lovely pool & garden"
A nice, spacious apartment in a lovely gated development (our kids got a great kick out of the electric gate!).
Quiet most of the time with no traffic noise, and most of the apartments appeared empty as they a likely owned by Spaniards who only appear at weekends (when it gets a little lively). The pool is actually much larger than even the photos suggest, and the gardens are beautifully maintained - lots of grass to sit on with ample shade if you want it (I did, my wife went for the burn). Nice to have a lifeguard on duty all day looking out for the kids - very often she was the only other person there! Absolute tranquility.
The apartment was also spacious and comfortable with a huuge terrace offering a choice of shade or sun. UK terrestrial TV channels, a large number of books to read, and all kitchen utensils and bits you could possibly require on holiday (including cold boxes to take to the beach).
Air conditioning units in each of the rooms very effective and welcome.
2 bathrooms useful (although the colour schemes wont win any style awards, fully functional is all you need!)
Located at the quiet end of the resort (which extends for a couple of miles!) so a hire car is necessary (though bus & taxi services were OK too when you want a drink). Millions of restaurants to choose from.
Beaches are a matter of taste, and these are so big you don't ever feel crowded. However, they are quite stoney, and in places shelve steeply into the water (a couple of metres and you're out of your depth) - something to consider for younger children. Trips to other towns north or south and we found some very child-friendly soft sand beaches though.
All in all a great destination for a family holiday with an emphasis on relaxation .
