The Costa de Almeria region
The Cabo de Gata National Park is Andalucia's largest costal protected area with some of Europes most original geological features and stretches the coastline around Almeria with high craggy mountains, some fabulous unspoilt beaches, hidden coves and, for divers, extensive coral reefs teeming with marine life giving some of the best diving in Spain. Designated a Unesco Biosphere reserve in 1997, the park shelters an extraordinary wealth of wildlife, including many rare and endemic plants and endangered fauna.
Or visit the historic town of Granada just a couple of hours away. An absolute must is a visit to the astonishing UNESCO national heritage site, the Alhambra. Don't forget to stroll the winding streets of the Albaicin, the old Arabic quarter, at the foot of the Arabian palace.
There are plenty of local towns to visit, not least Garrucha (just 10kms away from Mojacar), with its blue flag beaches. It remains an active fishing port and marina and is a seafood lovers delight with lots of restaurants along the promenade displaying the local catches of the day. You must try the local Gambas Roja (red prawns) which are delicious.
Just a couple of kms out from the popular and busy seaside town of Mojacar, which has numerous restaurants, beach bars and sandy beaches there is an abundance of things to do. A bus runs from just outside the resort into town and local taxis are available for hire. However, a car is very highly recommended, not least for the transfers from the airport.
There is plenty to do in Mojacar. From the Moorish/Arabic mediaeval setting of the old town with its narrow winding streets high in the hills overlooking the sea and open air events such as traditional Flamenco dancing to the bustling seaside town along the beach front, with it's plentiful restaurants, bars and sandy beaches.
Available activities are numerous whether it is relaxing on the beach, golfing, walking in the Cabo de Gata natural park, fishing, diving, sailing or exploring the countryside on horseback you should not be short of options.
Mojacar also has some of the best diving in Spain with some truly excellent dive sites for all levels from relative beginner to professional scuba diver. All levels of scuba courses are run from Mojacar beach, from novice to advanced. Fully qualified and highly experienced PADI professionals are available.
For day trips out try the Tabernas Desert, the location set of many westerns. "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Lawrence of Arabia" were both filmed here and you can visit fully functional Western Towns that feature sets and shows for the family.
Or visit Sorbas Caves just 30 mins away that boast 50km and over 1000 underground limestone caves. Routes range from basic 1.5 hour trips designed for families to demanding 4.5 hour route using ropes and harnesses.
Restaurants really are abundant in Mojacar, the old town and the slightly further Garrucha and cater for pretty much every taste and wallet. The Spanish also like to holiday in this area so try authentic paella, fresh seafood (such as Gambas Roja, red prawns, or Sardines cooked on an open fire sand pit). Or for something light try the local tapas for a taste of the region.
