The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn-et-Garonne region
Only 45 minutes from the city of Toulouse or further afield there are Bordeaux (1hour 40 minutes) and Rodez (2 hour 15 minutes). Toulouse is a beautiful city to visit, and with its distinctive brick architecture, it is sometimes known as la Ville Rose, the pink city! It is the cultural centre for the Occitan speaking region of southern France so there is a lot to see and do. Take the time to visit the city of Albi, birth place of Toulouse Lautrec (don't miss the brilliant musuem and gallery!). With the River Tarn flowing through the city and the world's largest brick construction (reputedly!), the fortress like Ste Cecile cathedral, it makes for a worthwhile day out.
If you venture out to Rodez you will see an impressive cathedral and see the city's former defence wall around the west of the city. Bordeaux is of course renowned for its wine, so make sure you visit a vinyard and try some for yourself- the perfect accompaniment to the regional dish of cassoulet, made with sausages and beans.
Moissac area
The nearest town Moissac, is a medieval town with a beautiful cloister and a church door used in the Sean Connery film In The Name Of The Rose. There is also a Centre of Romanesque Art , which contains important documents on medieval sculpture, illumination and wall-paintings. The Saint-Pierre abbey and cloister are listed among the World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France and it is worth visiting the town to see this alone.
The river Tarn flows through the centre of Moissac, perfect for an evening stroll! This is also the home of Golden Chasselas grapes, which are used to make some delicious wine, so be sure not miss out on some! You will be close to clusters of quaint villages along the Tarn et Garonne rivers, picturesque valleys and rambling vineyards- you will truly feel a million miles away!
Moissac has a weekend farmers' market where you can stock up on local produce.
