The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region

Marche is an amazing combination of beautiful rolling countryside, mountain ranges, woodland, ancient hilltop villages, stunning coastline and beautiful cities. Marche offers the traveller a wealth of culture, art, crafts, excellent local cuisine and beautiful scenery and being fairly undiscovered you will rarely be faced with the crowds now associated with the tourist sites of Tuscany. The list of villages, towns and cities worth seeing is endless where you can visit the numerous historic attractions or simply roam the narrow streets and beautiful piazzas. For the traveller who simply enjoys soaking up the local atmosphere Marche is certainly the place. For those wishing to take part in more energetic activities the region offers it all - skiing, walking, golf, aqua parks, tennis, horse riding, twin-engine go karting, quad biking, hot air ballooning, fishing, sailing and scuba diving.
The Marche region, a rectangle measuring 9693kmsq or 3.2% of Italy's total surface area lies between the Marecchia and Tronto rivers and to the east of the Apennine Mountains. Historically Marche has been an isolated region sheltered by its natural mountain borders and by the Adriatic Sea. However, it is gradually gaining recognition as a stunning region of Italy. Bordering both Umbria and Tuscany, as well as Abruzzo, Lazio and Emilia-Romagna, the region has an identity all of its own.
In general, Marche has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot dry summers. Summer temperatures average between 25-30 degrees but can reach the mid 40s. April, May, September and October are lovely warm months but without the extreme summer temperatures.
The Sibillini National park is only 40 minutes by car where guests can enjoy skiing in the winter and walking throughout the year as well as other activities. The historic city of Macerata which holds the second largest open-air opera festival during July and August is only 25 minutes by car. The ancient cities of Urbino and Ascoli Piceno can be reached under 2 hours.
The well-known Grotte di Frasassi (Frasassi caves) are one of the most complex karst systems in Italy. The caves offer an underground world of lakes, beautiful transparent alabaster formations, vaulted caverns and stalactites suspended like daggers. Guided tours are available throughout the year.
The Mogliano area
Caserma Carina is on the edge of Mogliano, only a 15 minute walk to the town centre offering easy access to banks, supermarkets, local shops, good restaurants and bars. Elevated, it is surrounded by high walls, including the ancient bulwarks of the original fortress. The church of Santa Maria Assunta contains an important work by Lorenzo Lotto, the Our Lady of the Assumption with Saints dated 1548. Mogliano boasts a fantastic week long festival in late June/early July. The festival includes dancing, music, re-enactments from 1744 around the town and to end the whole event a spectacular firework display to music. Throughout the week Tavernas open up in the historic centre of Mogliano where you can eat al fresco local and international cuisine. This is just one of many local festivals which occur throughout the summer months.
Within a 10 minute drive is The Abbey of Chiaravalle di Fiastra founded by the Cistercian monks of Clairvaux in 1142. The property lies within the Abbadia di Fiastra nature reserve where you can enjoy walking throughout the 1800 hectares. Minutes away from the Abbey is the archaeological area of Urbs Salvia with the well preserved amphitheater dating back to the 2nd century.
Marche's coastline offers some stunning scenery and in particular Monte Conero with its high cliffs (offering 18 walks) and small beaches tucked away in corners of natural beauty. Even closer for our guests is Porto San Giorgio, a pretty medieval fishing town with sandy beaches, established restaurants and a lovely marina. During July the locals hold the traditional Festa del Pesce (Fish Festival), where the fish is cooked in huge frying pans.
The Monti Sibillini National Park is a nature reserve covering an area of 60,000 hectares spread over the Sibillini mountain range. Wolves, bears and wild cats still roam this area of natural beauty which offers breath-taking walking holidays for all enthusiasts. Mountain lakes, waterfalls, deep gorges, woodlands and ancient monasteries are just some of the delights of this area. Organised walks and mule treks are available. However, there is a map available detailing all the walks in the area for those wishing to enjoy the delights of the Sibillini at their own pace.

Visiting Caserma Carina is a must if you are after a fantastic holiday in gorgeous apartments in a stunning location! Lesley, Dean and Grace are fabulous hosts, very knowledgeable on the area, and extremely warm and inviting! We cannot recommend Caserma Carina highly enough - it should be on everyone's to do list! |

We travelled across Italy from Rome to Ancona by train picking up a hire car when we arrived. The given directions were clear and we arrived without any problems. The views from Caserma are... more |

Guestbook for Caserma Carina
We have lost count of the number of visits we have made to Caserma Carina and have just returned from another blissfull 14 nights. The apartments never disapoint and the grounds seem to improve each year as a result of Dean and Lesleys care. Dean, Lesley and Gracie are excellent hosts and always have a good suggestion of which restaurants to visit or places to go.. We had a really enjoyable fabulously chilled out time. What more can we say, we are addicted and will be back. Elderkin, June 2010
This was our 3rd trip to Marche, but our first stay at Caserma Carina...our only regret was that we didn't book 2 weeks there! Caserma Carina is a great place just to read and relax, but there is also plenty to do in the region (countless hill towns to discover, hiking, beaches, wine tasting, shopping, etc.), and still relatively few tourists. Lesley, Dean and Gracie have created a wonderful spot... the setting is fabulous, the grounds and apartments are beautiful (and so clean and well maintained!) & the pool is just perfect....What is really special though is the warm and welcoming atmosphere that they have created. It was difficult to leave (even for little day trips, never mind at the end of our stay), and we hope to be back again soon...

This was our second visit to Caserma Carina and it did not disappoint. We had a fabulous holiday, Mogliano and the surrounding areas have so much to offer, it left us once again wanting more............................ We have some great memories of our stay, early morning swims (thank you Dean), the fabulous scenery, wonderful art, amazing festivals and that glass of vino watching the sun go down in the garden. Caserma Carina is an absolute gem, Dean and Lesley are great hosts who could not be more welcoming and helpful, supported by Gracie who was a delight. We have Le Marche in our hearts. we will be back!

I find the really long reviews are the ones full of negatives so be prepared for short & sweet. This place is a very professional, owner run, set up. The end to end experience - from website, booking, directions, greeting on arrival, very comfortable apartment, well tended gardens, spotless pool, well stocked honesty bar, beautiful views of the countryside and mountains, a warm farewell. In addition to that I must add my personal requirements which were all met - peace & quiet, given your own space, real attention to detail, and a wealth of local info on bars/cafes/tourist sights - should you need it. Caserma Carina provides a totally satisfying experience and is excellent value for money - what else does one need?

Our stay at Caserma Carina was everything we had hoped for and so much more! A wonderful location in an unspoilt area, with a very warm welcome from Dean, Lesley and Grace who work so hard to make the stay enjoyable. The well designed apartment was super, with 'extras' available to ensure a 'good start'. Dean and Lesley provided superb information about places to visit, eat and exploring the region. Take their advice! The gardens and swimming pool provided excellent relaxation after sightseeing or just for a quiet day. Dean's cheerful smile, banter and weather forecasts provide a bright start to the day. Lesley is so helpful with everything, and both have them have worked so hard to create this outstanding place. Normally staying in hotels, we loved the 'freedom' to do as we pleased here, and be part of this lovely family for a short time. We are planning to return next year and this is firmly at the top of our 'best place' list.
Farr, Shropshire, Sept 2010
Visited with my husband in September 2010 and we were incredibly impressed with Caserma Carina and our hosts' ability to provide directions/suggestions. The hospitatlity throughout our stay was first-class and we loved our apartment, clean and spacious, swimming in the immaculate pool, buying fresh fish and BBQ'ing in the evening, visiting nearby villages, Maccerata (fantastic cathedral and shopping), Sibillini Mountains and Lake Fiestra and a beach day on the Adriatic coast. Not enough time to doeverything, but a good excuse to come back SOON! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday.
