The Captain's house is in a traditionally painted old Canarian village house, which has been re-modelled in a simple and elegant style and set up as a home, not just as a rental property (as all our properties are - please see our website Hamilton Holiday Houses). It makes a well equipped really comfortable home from home and relaxing place to stay. It also has a large roof terrace with a kitchenette, retractable awning, for roof top living, as well as a full kitchen downstairs.

Ideal for two persons seeking that romantic holiday, it can also expand by using the sofa bed, and taking the separate apartment / studio, into a great base for a family holiday. Puerto de Mogan has a safe sandy beach with calm, clear water, fresh water showers, and sun-beds and umbrellas if you want them. Ideal for children and great for swimming, and just a few minutes stroll from the beach (slightly longer if you pause for an ice-cream), shops, bars, restaurants, marina and port in this family friendly resort.

Although there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, the Captains House is away from the bustle of the town and port. It is up a gentle slope about 80 yards from the village square, in a quiet part of the bottom of the old fishing village (there are no cars in the old village). The village continues up the hillside in a maze of little alleyways to be explored giving magnificent views from the top. Although it can only be reached on foot, car parking is only a couple of minutes away.

The Captain's house has two floors plus the large roof terrace with views over the marina, the beach, along the coast and inland up the valley to the mountains. Facilities for roof top living, include a mini kitchen, its own set of crockery, glasses and cutlery and cooking utensils, a hob, fridge, sink and drainer and BBQ. There is a wahing machine in the cupboard. This is as well as a kitchen downstairs. It has a retractable awning for shade during the day and catches the cooling breezes. Some guests spend most of their day up there. Meals on the roof terrace are great and dining under the stars at night is a real treat - and there are plenty of take-away/ pre-prepared foods to choose from.

Our local mini market shop around the corner sells fresh bread , locally grown vegetables, fruit and drinks as well as stocking all the basics of life and with a well stocked large supermarket in town that delivers, as well as local shops, self catering could not be easier.

Puerto de Mogan is in the south of the island, away from the main tourist areas, and is an all year round holiday destination with good weather and average temperatures range from 18-21 degrees in winter to 26 – 32 degrees in summer with a cooling Atlantic breeze (See map). Entering the front door over a small bridge (underneath is the path to the Captains apartment & studio which can be combined with the house) you come into a large living area with a dining table, chairs, and a small fully equipped kitchen right the way down to a garlic crusher and salad spinner.

There is also a large double sofa-bed to use if the house is shared by more than two, a built-in wardrobe with drawers, and hanging space with a separate shower/toilet/basin in the passage through to a small lobby with stairs to the next floor. A/C/ heating is available in this room should you need it.

On the first floor there is a large cool bedroom with a double bed, built-in wardrobe, chest of drawers, and an en suite shower, basin and WC. A/C/ heating is available in this room should you need it.

The stairs continue up to a large roof terrace with panoramic views over the marina, the beach, along the coast and inland up the valley to the mountains. There are two dining tables with chairs and a retractable roof awning to choose how much sun you want. Roof top living is completed by a small kitchen with its own cutlery, crockery and glasses a well as a hob, fridge, sink and drainer. There is a washing machine in the roof top cupbard.

A great place for all your meals in, especially lunch after a morning on the beach or to have dinner under the stars. Some guests spend most of their time up there enjoying the gently cooling breezes.

For home entertainment there is a selection of books and a TV with DVD player. There is a pair of multimedia speakers. Our local agents have a small collection of DVDs. There is also a boxed games compendium. Wi-Fi is available on a subscription basis from local networks or via our agent at 25 euros per week.

Access to the first floor bedroom and roof terrace is by a staircase which is narrow and may not be suitable for some people with walking difficulties.

Parking is provided on a paid basis in the road and car park about 150 yards away and free of charge in the town behind the beach shops and restaurants, about 5 minutes walk away. There is a space to stop and unload a car at the bottom of the village square near the house.

Restaurants are only a few minutes away behind the beach or in the port. There is also a restaurant with a pool and sun terrace in the port. You could not be more conveniently placed!

We can direct you to car hire firms, where with free parking available in Puerto Mogan, the cost is often not much different for a week's hire than a taxi in both directions to and from the airport. There are trips up into the mountains with spectacular scenery to visit picturesque villages so it is worth thinking of having a car.

We are flexible on lengths of stay to meet flight patterns. Please ask if you want to stay for a shorter or longer period than one week. There are plenty of flight combinations which allow for different lengths of stay. We will always be as flexible as possible to meet your requirements. The house and apartment are available all year round.

Our local English speaking agent, Carine and her staff, have an office in the port and provides a “meet and greet” service at the house when you arrive and will meet up with you at the end of your stay. She will also deal with any queries during your stay in Puerto de Mogan.

Carine can arrange a taxi to meet you at the airport and a welcome pack of food and essentials to be waiting you in the house or apartment if you are arriving very late. A welcome pack of food can be provided at extra cost payable locally, please indicate if you require this on our booking form, although the local mini supermarket two alleyways away is open from around 8am in the morning with fresh bread.

We will send you an invoice to confirm your booking. We ask for one third of the holiday cost to be paid as a deposit on booking. Payments are in £stg although we also accept euros at the current exchange rate.

The balance is to be paid 3 months prior to arrival or the full amount if booking within that date. A reminder invoice will be sent. We will send you the booking terms and conditions with the first invoice. The contract for your holiday is made when you have paid the deposit.

To allow for cleaning between changeovers please do not arrive before 3.30pm on the day of arrival and on day of departure leave the properties by 10.30 am. If there is no one staying immediately before or after you, then by prior arrangement, you will be able to arrive earlier or leave later to suit your flight times.

All bookings are made on the condition the full amount of the cost of your holiday is due 3 months before the first date of occupation of the properties and is not refundable in the event of cancellation for any reason.

Directions and house details will be sent a minimum of 2 weeks prior to departure.

You are responsible for booking your own flights and travel insurance.

The Canary Islands region

Gran Canaria is the principal island in the Canaries, situated off the African coast at the level of the Sahara, about 120 miles into the Atlantic.

Whilst The Canaries are often regarded as a winter sun break, they have a year-round sub-tropical climate. Minimum temperatures are normally around 18/20 degrees C in winter on the coast with little rainfall. In the summer the temperatures can be up to 30 C degrees, but there is usually a cooling ocean breeze. Water temperature is up to around 25 C degrees in summer.

Gran Canaria is in the same time zone as the UK so if you time your flight well you can be leaving UK in the afternoon and eating dinner on the harbourside at Puerto de Mogan in the evening.

The north of the island is where the capital city Las Palmas and the airport is situated, and has a different climate from Puerto de Mogan. Puerto de Mogan is situated in the dry sheltered southern end of the island. The spectacular mountain range in the middle splits the island and the weather.

Las Palmas is where Christopher Columbus dropped in on his voyages across the Atlantic to discover the New World and the old part of the city has an excellent museum, older colonial buildings and cathedral.

There are deep valleys and gorges, villages hanging onto mountainsides and wonderful vistas. Depending on the time of year there will be flowers and almond tree blossom. Deeper valleys have palm trees and vines. There are some good walking trails in the National Park in the southern end of the island. The sand dunes at Maspalomas are a world heritage site.


Puerto de Mogan in Gran Canaria is known locally as "The Jewel of the Canaries".

A pretty Venetian-style marina complex with houses, shops, bars and restaurants has been added to the original fishing village at Puerto de Mogan where the Captains House and apartment is situated. The old village is situated just behind the marina and is still largely populated by Canarians. Its narrow alleyways and painted houses climb back up the hillside, as the streets quickly turn into steps. It is like being in a Greek village if you want a comparison.There are no high rise buildings in Puerto de Mogan.

Puerto de Mogan is tucked away on the south of the island, nestling into the cliff at the end of a deep valley with towering scenery going back inland and separated from the north of the island by a mountain range which changes the weather. Although it feels a million miles away from the airport, the city of Las Palmas and the tourist centres of Maspalomas and Playa de los Ingles, it is less than one hour way from all of these by car, taxi or the regular bus service.

Puerto de Mogan is very well placed to explore the island’s interior as the national park, with the most spectacular scenery, is at this end of the island. The coast road stops at Puerto de Mogan and turns inland to cut across the island through a magnificent rugged mountain landscape formed by volcanic activity. You can also take a trip up into the mountains by car, taxi or bus where, at around 5,000 ft above sea level, you can experience a completely different climate and vegetation with stunning views and beautiful light, particularly at sunset.

Car hire is available in the town, neighbouring resorts, and at the airport. Taxis are cheap and plentiful (the village cab rank is a minute away from the house and apartment) and there are good bus services around and across the island.

For a more relaxing time the golden sand beach is large enough for those who want a sun bed and an umbrella or those who prefer to lie on a towel at the water’s edge. The beach is shielded from the Atlantic by a breakwater so that swimming is safe and perfect for children. The beach is normally lifeguarded and has showers and toilets.

The old Canarian way of life still goes on in the old village with the local card school (men only!) meeting in the village square every evening while their wives sit outside in the local café drinking coffee and watching their children play in the square. Apart from the road into the port, the village streets (including ours) are not accessible by car.

Boat trips, deep sea fishing, dolphin watching and scuba diving are all available from the port and marina. There is a regular glass bottomed ferry service calling at resorts up the coast which goes every half hour during the day.

The small town behind the beach has plenty of shops. There is good shopping, and for food there is a well-stocked supermarket which has a wide selection of wine and food. They will deliver to your door. Tucked away down an alleyway just around the corner from us is a mini-market which sells all the basics and more, as well as delicious fresh bread daily from 8am so self catering could not be easier.

When you do not feel like cooking there is a wide variety of European restaurants in the port and the marina, serving a wide range of food including Canarian specialities as well as every other type of cuisine (even Chinese!). Particularly noteworthy is the fishermen’s co-operative restaurant in the port that serves wonderful freshly caught fish, as do a lot of the restaurants because the port has its own small trawler fleet. Because it is a big Spanish family resort the Spanish and local Canarian food is authentically prepared.

Whilst visitors come to Puerto de Mogan for the day by the local ferry service, especially on Fridays when there is a tourist market, by 5pm most of them have left on the last boat. It is a family holiday destination during school holidays for a number of nationalities, but mostly Spanish, and it is also a year-round resort for Scandinavians and other Northern Europeans escaping from the miseries of winter to blue skies and sunshine. Although there is a relatively small number of English visitors staying there, a large number do come on day trips so most people, including the excellent local doctor, speak English.

"Wonderful holiday!"

We have just spent 4 glorious weeks in Gran Canaria, 3 of which were spent in the Captain's House. Having just had a week in the Anfi Beach resort, the Captain's House had a lot to live up to, and boy - it didn't let us down! Everything you needed for a relaxing and chilled out holiday was provided, especially on the fabulous roof-top terrace with it's fitted kitchen facilities, BBQ and THE most amazing view across mountains, beach and harbour. It was hard to drag ourselves away... But Mogan itself has so many restaurants scattered around the beach and harbour we forced ourselves to go out!!

The house is situated in the old part of Mogan, and living amongst the locals was a wonderful experience, listening to them chatting away as they went about their daily chores. The infamous singing chef kept us entertained as he prepared his homemade pasta and pizzas, and the talking parrot was very amusing as we sat sipping cocktails on the terrace.

All in all, one of best holidays and have already booked to return next year.

"Fantastic location in beautiful Mogan"

We spent another wonderful week in Captain's House over the New Year holiday and enjoyed the celebrations by watching the fireworks from the roof terrace before joining the dancing in the square. The view from the roof terrace is great and the accommodation is in a great spot. The local agent responds very quickly and deals with any issues promptly with minimal fuss. Have booked up again!

"A charming house in an excellent location"

We stayed in The Captain's House in December 2014. I can honestly say that it was probably the most relaxing and enjoyable holiday we have ever had. The house is in an excellent location - only minutes from the beach and marina in Puerto Mogan which is a beautiful and very charming fishing village - The Captain's House couldn't be in a better position. The house was very well equipped for a self catering holiday - our favourite part of the house however was the amazing roof terrace. From the terrace you have wonderful views of the beach, there is also an outdoor kitchen and sun loungers which was extremely useful. We used the pick up and drop off service from the airport which meant we didn't have to hire a car for the duration of the holiday. If you do want to explore there are lots of taxis available as well as a regular and reliable bus service. All in all a fantastic holiday - we will definitely return!

"Great location, shame the property does not live up to expectations!"

We were very concerned about these comments as they are at variance to the visitors immediately preceding this visitor and afterwards.

This visitor's email came to us on 4 December at 12.45pm. We emailed our local agents on 4 December at 2.37pm with their email and emailed our visitor back at 3pm with a detailed response on some points having spoken to the agent about some of the issues raised. For some of the points we were waiting for the agent to speak to the cleaner and we subsequently sent the visitors photos to the agents.

The agents took time to come back as it is high season and their reply unfortunately caught us in the run up to Xmas with a short notice home move 1st week of January which is why the remaining point was not answered earlier. But instead of emailing us to remind about the reply the comments were posted in the way they were.

My point being is that we care a lot about our visitor experience and constantly strive to improve that.

Puerto de Mogan is in a sub tropical climate. There are cockroaches around in the village and elsewhere and we will get them occasionally up on the roof terrace as that is open but rarely do they get into the house. We spray every three months as everyone else does as a precaution.It is a fact of life that they are about and will be so after a lot of rain.

The property is not "very tired" - it is constantly maintained. It is a village house - not a modern shiny glass concrete block. Wood which is oiled will get bleached and we allow that to happen as a feature rather than constantly re-varnish. We were told by the agent that we had a change of cleaner and there was some catch up to do - this was dealt with in our first reply.

This visitor was disgruntled at the start as the taxi booked for them from the airport did not work as it should (this is the first time in 5 years it has not) and the water pressure in the village was low for two days including the day of their arrival and a fuse had tripped on the fuse board. Not a good start - all of which led to picking petty faults where visitors before and after do not seemed to have noticed as you can see from the reviews.

We are sorry this visitor did not have the holiday that matched their expectations, whatever they were.

"Fantastic place for a relaxing holiday"

Recently returned from Puerto de Morgan having stayed at The Captain's House. I have to say that my wife and I had one of our best holidays ever. The house exceeded our expectations having read the numerous reviews on tripadvisor. The house was fully equipped with everything you would possibly need for a relaxing self catering holiday. The best part of the house was the roof terrace with it fantastic views over the beach and town. With its outdoor kitchen and eating area, who needs to go to a restaurant! You couldn't beat the views. Looking forward to returning again.

"Happy House/Happy Holiday"

Just returned from 10 nights at the Captains House with my partner and my 19 year old niece. We are in our 50s and she of course is a teenager. All three of us loved it which just goes to show it's suitable for different ages, but perhaps not very young children due to the stairs.
The first floor was like a self contained apartment so my niece had her own space. Our bedroom was huge and the roof terrace just amazing. We spent loads of time on it. It had a well equipped kitchen on it and good views. Was also a real suntrap.
My partner and I were in Puerto de Mogan last year and stayed in a hotel. However, we were just has happy self catering in the Captains House, if not more so.
The only thing I wasn't too keen on, and this is personal preference, is that the bedroom curtains were thin and let in a lot of light [during the night from a street light and early morning from the sun]. I really like a dark bedroom. As I say this is just my personal choice and is no criticism of the House itself or owners.
We would be happy to go back to the Captains House in the future.

"Charming house in outstanding location"

We stayed at the Captains house for 1 week and I wish I could have stayed longer !
The house itself is right in the heart of Mogan but quiet and charming with all the facilities you need.
The outstanding terrace is enhanced by the fact that it has is own kitchen ,so we had breakfast and pre dinner bottle of wine up there taking in the stunning views.
We were close to everything from bars,shops and cafés to the pretty harbour and little beach.
The bedroom is very spacious with comfy bed and ensuite bathroom.
I would thoroughly recommend this house and Mogan itself for a wonderful relaxing holiday with great selection of restaurants in very close proximity.
One of our favourite places for lunch was the little Bodega on the corner where each day I tried different wines from the region accompanied by the most delicious hams and cheeses.

We visited the Captain's House between December 25 and January 14, and enjoyed three weeks of sunny weather at the beach and on the nice roof top, where you can cook a meal while looking at the sea... Everything is proper, great atmosphere, nice staff - highly recommendable!
