The Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region

Marrakech, with her 3 million inhabitants is one of the Imperial Cities of Morocco. The suburbs are very noisy and polluted but the town centre is quite interesting for her historical palaces, beautiful gardens, splendid monuments and the urbanism where big avenues contrast with the souks who didn't change in the last 400 year at least.

The Jet-Set, as well stars as captains of industry as european politics like to come to Marrakech in the winter to meet their friends in a sunny environment.

Interesting trips from Marrakech are the Atlas Mounts, the beautiful roads to Ouarzazate and Zagora, the "Palmeraie" and the valley of the Ourika.

Too hot in the summer in Marrakech, Essaouira and her moderate micro-climate offers the best alternative.

Mogador

As we told, Essaouira has a wonderful moderate micro-climate due to the Atlantic Ocean and the Alisé-winds blowing from the north in the summer. Statistics give only 8 to 10 rainy days a year, temperatures between 20 and 32° Celsius.

With her 90.000 inhabitants, Essaouira is preserved from mass-tourism, so the population is very friendly and proud of their city.

Essaouira, being a port on the Atlantic has been dominated by portugese, spanish and french colonials for the last 6 centuries.

The Medina, classified by the UNESCO as world-heritage, still preserved, is a testimonial of all these periods.

Nature around Essaouira is so beautiful and well preserved thanks to strict building regulations and invites you to a trekking to the shepherds or fisherman living in the dunes in very small villages in the middle of nowhere. You can choose to reach them by foot or by horse, by mountainbike or by dromedary, by quad a.s.o....., with or without a guide.

Essaouira is a famous centre of watersports, mainly kitesurf and windsurf , soon possibikities for catamaran-sailing.

Several music festivals, numerous artists, painters and sculptors offer an impressive cultural touch. Also famous are the craftsmen making splendid items from Thuya-wood or iron.

The argan-oil products, as well gastronomic as cosmetic, made in women-cooperatives are unique in the world.

Nice trips by car are: Safi by the coastal road, magnificent road to Agadir, two days-trip to Marrakech, round-trip Essaouira-Marrakech-Ouarzazate-Zagora-Agadir-Essaouira.
