The Dumfries and Galloway region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored. The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's ‘must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries. Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs.

Moffat

Sharing its borders with Ayrshire in the north and Cumbria to the south, Dumfries and Galloway is a beautiful region of Scotland renowned for its rugged scenery as well as its many famed artists and writers. One of the most notable is famous poet Robert Burns who lived in Dumfries through the latter stages of his life. Here you can take a look around the places he once lived, there's Ellisland Farm as well as the house he lived at on Burns Street or the Globe Inn where he used to spend time with a drink, you can even sit in his favourite chair still there over 200 years later! The area is steeped in history and there are a number of castles open to visitors, each set in some amazing scenery. Caerlaverock, Britain's only triangular castle has stood since the 13th century and boasts a large moat and imposing gatehouse which are all waiting to be explored. There are a whole host of other activities to explore here with the Galloway forest park being a massive hit with both cyclists and walkers alike. Being part bordered by sea as well, Dumfries and Galloway has some fantastic coastal routes and sandy beaches which are all waiting to be discovered.
