The Sicily region

There is no other place quite like Sicily. Located just off the southern tip of Italy in the centre of the Mediterranean, Sicily is an island forged by many cultures. Through the ages a steady stream of peoples have left their mark including the Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans. Yet Sicily remains an island unique unto itself - a beautiful collision of the past and present - a melting pot of great Mediterranean traditions full of magnificent artwork, architecture, and folklore, plus an amazing bounty of archeological remains including two of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world.

Explore the beaches and discover the craggy coast and hidden coves that remain unchanged since the first explorers stepped ashore. Well-marked roads lead to endless adventures thorough the heart of Sicily and past miles of citrus, almond, and olive groves.

Modica / Ragusa area

The city of Modica is unique for its baroque tresures, shops, restaurants and still a very unturist area, the people are very friendly,Modica is also famous for the Cioccolato of Modica a traditional cioccolate made from a recipe from the 1600's.

The town of Modica is a very safe and enjoyable place to sit by a cafe or just go for a lesurely evening walk...the beaches of the area are unpopulated and unspoiled.

In March 2003 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) acknowleged that the city of Modica and its surrounding areas to be added to the WORLD HERITAGE LIST for the baroque tresures it holds in its historic buldings and architectural design unique only to this part of Sicily, Modica, built between two valleys and hills is known for its Baroque architecture, has restaurants, cafes, supermarkets and shops.Modica is also called the Positano of Sicily.

The town of Modica was so particular until the middle of the last century that it was called the second Venice of Italy: it is situated on the valley where two torrents merge into each other and there were a lot of large and small bridges to connect the zones of the lower area. The town is shaped as a 'broken pomegranate', happy image that Gesualdo Bufalino coined for Modica, climbs up the ridges and reaches the top of the castle.
