The Sicily region

Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean. Sicily has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild and wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Sicily received a variety of different cultures, including the original Italic people, the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Spaniards, French, and Normans, each contributing to the island's culture, particularly in the areas of cuisine and architecture. Sicily has long been noted for its fertile soil due to the volcanic eruptions in the past and present. The local agriculture is also helped by the pleasant climate of the island. The main agricultural products are wheat, citrons, oranges (Arancia Rossa di Sicilia IGP), lemons, tomatoes (Pomodoro di Pachino IGP), olives, olive oil, artichokes, Opuntia ficus-indica (Fico d'India dell'Etna DOP), almonds, grapes, pistachios (Pistacchio di Bronte DOP) and wine. Cattle and sheep are raised. The cheese productions are particularly important thanks to the Ragusano DOP and the Pecorino Siciliano DOP. Ragusa is noted for its honey (Miele Ibleo) and chocolate (Cioccolato di Modica IGP) productions.

Sicily welcomes you 365 days a year, because every day in Sicily have an appointment with flavors and traditions, rituals and ideas, performances and wonder, and power sports, theater and magic, music and emotions. Be amazed by the unique scenery that only Sicily can provide you with the ancient memories of a land rich in history and contemporary artistic expressions.

Modica

Modica is about rwenty kilometres from Ragusa.Magnificent sightseeing places are the rocky abutments which surround the city as though wanting to protect it. The centre is divided into two urban areas: Upper Modica, whose houses scale the rocks and Lower Modica, arranged in a valley. An important district of Modica is Frigintini (8 Km away), which bases its economy on agricolture, farming and milling.

Around Frigintini there are quarries from which they extract stone, which is then worked by able stone cutters.

The excursion to the river Tellesimo is extremely interesting from a naturalist point of view. A good variety of fish can be found there , such as trout and eels, as well as typically Mediterranean flora.
