The Emilia Romagna region

Emilia Romagna has many historic cities with loads of sights. Bologna and Ferrara absolutely deserve a visit of at least a few days and, although it's a major industrial centre, Modena has a Romanesque cathedral as good as any in Italy.

While in Emilia Romagna be sure to enjoy the food. The region offers some of the finest culinary traditions of the Italian peninsula. Parma has its cheese and ham, Ferrara has is salame, Bologna nicknamed la grassa, or the fat one, does a great mortadella and is the birthplace of tortellini.

BOLOGNA: this beautiful city has food for the mind as well as the belly. An exceedingly cultured and sophisticated town, with some beautiful architecture. Set aside a day or two of your vacation in Emilia-Romagna for a visit to Bologna.

A superb and unspoiled medieval centro storico is the chief reason for visiting MODENA. You have to see the 12th century cathedral (duomo) during your holiday in Emilia-Romagna ... one of the finest Romanesque structures on the planet.

PARMA has the highest standard of living in Italy, an affluent town even by Emilia-Romagna's elevated standards. A pleasant, comfortable town, a big reason for a visit to Parma is the superb food. Parma ham and Parmesan cheese is just the beginning.

REGGIO EMILIA is a quiet, ancient town, with a cathedral and some fine churches and galleries. Parma is an elegant, affluent city with its own opera house, while sleepy Piacenza marks the western border with Lombardy.

RAVENNA is today a centre of art, culture and, famously 'the city of mosaics'. Be sure to visit Ravenna during your vacation in Emilia-Romagna.

Also visit FERRARA during your vacation in Emilia-Romagna. A fascinating historic town, it was once the base of the Dukes of Este, who built a model and very beautiful town.

GALLERIA FERRARI IN MARANELLO: The Galleria, ideally, is divided into four areas, each capable of satisfying the expectations of competition fans and those passionate about classic cars. Here visitors will find Formula 1, themed exhibitions, technological innovations and photographic shows.
The visit begins in the space where the automobiles are on display.
It is has become the place where Ferrari’s past, present and future is preserved, giving the visitor a fascinating insight into the history of the Prancing Horse.

Modena / Zocca area

Zocca is characterized by a mountain landscape of great importance, along with an important network of pathways for hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers through ancient villages, castles and churches. Many are the recreational activities offered: a vast and diverse program of events enlivens the summer season.
Zocca is known as one of the Cities of the Chestnut: during the month of October, the renowned Festival of the Chestnut is hold here.

A large part of the territory is occupied by the Regional Park of Sassi di Roccamalatina, natural habitat of great importance, visited for both learning purposes, as well as for recreational activities, and ideal destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

Guestbook

Dear Silvia and Riccarda,

Choosing Fontanini as our holiday destination was an excellent idea! Our family spent two lovely weeks in Torre in the beginning of July 2006 enjoying pleasent climate, fresh air, quietness, beautiful views and buildings. The friendly and warm hearted people made us feel like home.
As a designer I paid attention to the interior which had been decorated with good taste. The kids were lucky to have a well equipped swimming pool nearby in the village. That´s why it wasn´t worth driving all the way to the seaside. After doing it once we were happy to be back among the friendly village people away from tourist places...But it was nice to go shopping to Bologna and Modena now and then. The history of art and architecture makes the city of Florence worth visiting over and over again.

Arrivederci e mille grazie!
Leila, Eero, Kaarle, Kreeta, Max and Viki from Finland

Hello Silvia,

I just wanted to let you know that everything worked out fine with “Torre”.

“Osteria del Sole” and “La Cascina delle Rose” were both enjoyable eating experiences. Everyone treated us well. We enjoyed shopping in Monteombraro and Zocca and had some great experiences as well.

Otherwise, we were very happy with the locale and the ease with which we were able to travel to Bologna, Modena, Ravenna, and Parma. The "short-cut" was perfect - nobody suffered any further episodes of car-sickness - and the scenery was beautiful.
That was our primary goal and we enjoyed Emilia Romagna and plan on returning again in the future.

Sincerely,

Gregory Garbin from USA
