Cottage | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 2
Villa Artemis, overlooking the sea dates back to at least 1920. It has been a taverna as well as a home in years gone by.
This unusual holiday home is furnished and equipped to a high standard. A rough track will take you down to a pebble/shingle cove and the village is approx. 500 mtrs away along an unsurfaced track which runs along the edge of the sea. The friendly locals keep their little boats in a small harbour just below the villa.
Villa Artemis is essentially a romantic retreat for those who enjoy being completely independent away from any organised activities or on-site facilities/management.

The Lassithi Prefecture region
Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands and the fifth in size in the Mediterranean. This island has
had a troubled history not least 464 years under Venetian rule and ensuing centuries of Turkish
domination marked by no fewer than ten major revolts. Crete was only united with Greece in 1913
so islanders tend to regard themselves as Cretan first and Greek second.
Crete is 250 kms long and has four mountain ranges. Lefka Ori near Chania, Ida (local name
Psiloritis) west of Heraklion, Dikti - Lassithi plateau and the Sitia Mountain range in the east.
Crete's historical record goes back to 2000 B.C. with the Minoans. Sir Arthur Evans, an English
archaeologist discovered the first remains of this advanced race at the magnificent palace of
Knossos and due to his finds he was able to write a new chapter in the history at the ancient world.
Now many examples of Minoan architecture and culture have been uncovered and can be seen
Crete has much beautiful and unusual scenery, rugged coastlines, sandy shores, mountains, gorges, valleys and plateaux.
Once you arrive at Villa Artemis in Mochlos, you tend not to want to go too far!
Mochlos itself is famous for its excellent selection of tavernas and there are a couple of little shops, cafes and mini markets. The area is generally relaxed and with a good ambience.
A small boat makes visits to Mochlos Island, where there is an archaeological site and the owner can also take you on small local cruises.
If you wish to explore further then the towns of Sitia, Ierapetra and Aghios Nikolaos are all within an easy drive. Small local villages can be visited and during the summer these villages host summer fiestas with feasting and dancing until dawn. The main towns also host events thoughout the summer.
On the south coast there are many small bays within attractive settings and the long sandy beach of Makrigialos is popular with locals and holidaymakers alike.
There are three major Minoan palaces including the famous Knosses, plus innumberable smaller Minioan and Dorian sites.
Passed Aghios Nikolaos is the attractive harbour village of Elounda and nearby Spingalonga Island, to which there are several boat trips during the season. Kritsa, a village dating back to Byzantine times has a church with well preserved frescos, an archaeological site and many shops, tavernas and cafes.
Lassithi Plateau is a beautiful drive from Villa Artemis and a most interesting place to visit.
The winter period is quieter, but the roads are empty and the big archeological sites and museums are open and not crowded. During the Spring, the wild flowers are in abundance and the mild weather encourages long country walks or lazy times by the sea.
